URL2PNG is a hosted API for generating website screenshots inside an app, website, or business process. Its documented controls cover thumbnail sizing, viewport and full-page capture, custom CSS, timing, headers, and caching, so it can fit workflows that need configurable captures rather than manual screenshots. Its published plans are paid, and the available materials do not establish independent performance results. This review assesses documented features and terms, not hands-on test results.
What URL2PNG does
URL2PNG describes itself as “Screenshots as a Service” and offers an API that accepts a webpage URL and returns an image capture. Its homepage says it can “Capture snapshots of any website, right in your app, quickly and reliably”; that is the vendor’s characterization, not an independently verified performance finding. The homepage lists thumbnail or 1:1 output, full-page capture, viewport control, user-agent and language overrides, custom CSS injection, and JavaScript-controlled capture. URL2PNG homepage
The service is aimed at developers who want to generate previews from URLs as part of a product or automated workflow. The documentation provides a request-based integration rather than requiring a screenshot to be taken manually in a browser.
How the API request works
URL2PNG’s v6 quickstart describes a request assembled from an account API key, a request token derived from the full query string and account secret, and the target URL. The API key starts with “P,” according to the guide. The token is generated for each request; follow the current documentation when constructing and signing requests, and treat the secret as credential material. The quickstart includes examples for Ruby, cURL, Python, Node.js, PHP, VB.NET, Perl, and C#. URL2PNG v6 quickstart and documentation

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Because the token depends on the complete query string, build the exact parameters first and use URL-encoding consistently. A changed parameter or differently encoded URL can produce a token mismatch. The documentation’s examples are the appropriate reference for the precise signing algorithm and language-specific implementation; the source material reviewed does not provide a separate security best-practices guide.
Capture controls relevant to thumbnails
The quickstart documents the following configuration options. They let an application shape the screenshot request, but they do not guarantee that every target page will render successfully or identically.

| Control | What it changes | Documented behavior |
|---|---|---|
thumbnail_max_width |
Constrains the maximum output width for a thumbnail. | Use it when previews must fit a known display or storage width. |
viewport |
Sets the browser capture dimensions. | The documented default is 1480×1037; the quickstart example gives a maximum of 5000×5000. |
fullpage |
Attempts to capture the full document canvas rather than only the visible viewport. | Defaults to false, meaning viewport-only capture. |
unique |
Forces a fresh screenshot by varying the value. | Useful when a cached image would be stale; fresh renders count toward usage. |
custom_css_url |
Injects custom CSS from a URL. | Can adjust page presentation before capture. |
say_cheese |
Waits for a named page element before capturing. | Useful when a particular element indicates that relevant page content is present. |
accept_languages and user_agent |
Override language and user-agent request headers. | Use when the site varies content based on those headers. |
delay |
Waits after document readiness and asset loading. | Can allow additional time for late page content. |
ttl |
Changes how long a screenshot is cached. | The documented default is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). |
The homepage also advertises rendering for graphs and canvas, webfonts, CSS3, SVG, and video. Those are vendor feature claims; the available materials do not independently verify fidelity across websites, browser conditions, or page types.

The plans page says there is no free account at present, though student and open-source projects can pitch the service. It lists month-to-month plans that can be cancelled anytime, and a 10-day money-back guarantee. Listed plan-wide inclusions include Fastly CDN, full-page screenshots, custom CSS injection, no watermarks, downloading or hotlinking, and operational transparency through Statuspage.
URL2PNG defines a fresh screenshot as a new render. Cached screenshot impressions do not count against plan usage; screenshots are cached for 30 days by default. The page describes overage charges in units of 1,000 and says it rounds down, so confirm the billing calculation with URL2PNG for your anticipated usage rather than estimating a bill from the per-screenshot rate alone.

Does URL2PNG fit a thumbnail workflow?
It may fit when
- Your application needs to create website previews from URLs without having a user capture each one manually.
- You want to set image width, viewport, full-page behavior, or page-specific timing and language settings through documented request parameters.
- Your workload can be planned around a paid monthly allowance and cached impressions.
Check carefully when
- You need independently established render speed, uptime, or visual fidelity: the reviewed materials provide no independent measurements for those qualities.
- You expect variable workloads: fresh renders are metered, and the listed non-enterprise plans charge for overages.
- You require a free ongoing tier: the plans page says URL2PNG does not currently offer a free account.
For thumbnail pipelines, the key operational question is whether your cache policy matches how often source pages need to be refreshed. URL2PNG’s default cache period is 30 days; use the documented TTL or unique-capture control according to whether freshness or reuse matters more for a particular URL.

Cloudinary documents an add-on workflow in which a dynamic Cloudinary transformation URL invokes URL2PNG to generate a screenshot, then caches and delivers the resulting image through Cloudinary. Cloudinary says add-on transformation URLs are required by default to be eagerly generated or signed through its authenticated API to limit cost exposure from unplanned dynamic requests. This is a documented integration route, not a requirement for all URL2PNG customers. Cloudinary URL2PNG add-on documentation

What the published evidence does not establish
The official product, documentation, and plans pages describe features and commercial terms, but they do not establish independent benchmarks for speed, reliability, or rendering fidelity. No independent uptime, customer-outcome, or comparative price evidence is available here, so URL2PNG should be evaluated against a representative set of your target pages and expected capture volume before you commit to a workload-dependent plan.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a direct screenshot API alternative, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and it accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use, which can make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
