Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use CBR when sending prerecorded 4K 60fps video to YouTube Live. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), with a recommended ingest rate of 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Those are YouTube’s published recommendations, not results from a head-to-head test of CBR and VBR in prerecorded-video software.
CBR vs. VBR: which should you use?
For a prerecorded file that an encoder sends to YouTube as a live stream, set the encoder’s bitrate mode to CBR. YouTube specifies CBR for live encoder input and does not give a separate VBR exception for prerecorded material. The platform’s guidance does not compare CBR and VBR quality or establish that every playout application behaves identically.
CBR means the encoder aims to maintain a steady bitrate. VBR varies bitrate as the image becomes more or less complex. For this decision, follow YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation rather than choosing VBR based on a general assumption that a variable rate will improve quality.
What bitrate for YouTube Live 4K 60fps?
Choose the row for the codec your stream sends to YouTube. YouTube Help lists these figures for 2160p at 60 fps; they are platform recommendations and minimums, not measurements from an independent test.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
| Ingest video codec | Listed minimum | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. The minimum is not the recommended target. If your workflow uses H.264, for example, use the H.264 row rather than applying the lower AV1/H.265 figures.
Choose a rate your connection can sustain
The upload connection must reliably carry the outgoing stream at its configured rate. YouTube advises creators to test before going live and monitor stream health. If your connection cannot sustain the recommended rate, investigate the connection or choose a lower output resolution or frame rate rather than assuming that VBR removes the need for adequate upload capacity.

Other YouTube encoder settings that matter
For 4K 60fps live ingestion, YouTube’s guidance also specifies or recommends the following:
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists up to 60 fps.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS; its listed streaming protocols include RTMP and RTMPS.
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Picture: progressive scan; for SDR, Rec. 709.
Use the exact codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe settings supported by your encoder and selected ingest workflow. A codec’s listed bitrate does not guarantee that a particular application or hardware encoder supports that codec for YouTube ingestion.

How to test a prerecorded stream before going live
- Match the planned output. In your streaming or playout application, select 2160p at 60 fps and the intended ingest codec. Set CBR and enter the corresponding recommended bitrate from YouTube’s table.
- Set keyframes and audio. Configure a two-second keyframe interval, keep it within YouTube’s four-second maximum, and use AAC or MP3 audio.
- Use the same source material. Rehearse with the actual prerecorded file, including its representative audio and motion, rather than a static test image.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. Check that YouTube receives the expected resolution and frame rate and monitor YouTube’s stream health indicators for ingest problems.
- Confirm the network can hold the rate. If the stream is unstable, address upload capacity or encoder/network configuration before the public stream. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not prescribe a specific prerecorded-video software workflow.
4K latency and live-stream readiness
YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency. Its low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K, so do not plan a 4K broadcast on the assumption that this option can be enabled. Review YouTube’s current encoder guidance before an event because available settings and ingest support can depend on the chosen workflow.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Using a prerecorded file does not change the need to have rights to the video and audio you broadcast. Confirm that you are authorized to use all music, footage, and other material in the file, and check YouTube’s current policies and any applicable restrictions on the channel or content. A technically healthy stream does not by itself establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization.

Troubleshooting a 4K 60fps live stream
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports unstable or insufficient bitrate | Whether the upload connection can reliably sustain the configured CBR rate. | Stabilize the upload connection or reduce output demands; use the codec-specific YouTube bitrate guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate. |
| Configured bitrate is below the recommended target | Whether you used the correct codec row and mistook the listed minimum for the recommendation. | Set the recommended rate if your connection can sustain it. Otherwise, address connection capacity or consider a lower output resolution or frame rate. |
| Keyframe-related ingest warning | The encoder’s keyframe interval. | Set it to two seconds and ensure it does not exceed four seconds. |
| The stream is not 4K or is not 60 fps | The output resolution and frame rate in the encoder, and the ingest status reported by YouTube. | Confirm the encoder output is configured for 2160p at 60 fps and that the selected workflow supports it. |
| 4K stream has more delay than expected | The latency mode available for 4K. | Plan for normal latency; YouTube’s low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K. |
