The settings below reflect YouTube and FFmpeg documentation checked on October 3, 2026.
Recommended FFmpeg settings for 720p60
Use these as the target settings for a 1280×720, 60-frame-per-second YouTube Live ingest. The right bitrate also depends on video complexity, encoding quality, and the stability of your upload connection.

Build the command and connect to YouTube

Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key for your broadcast. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your event. YouTube’s setup guidance is at Set up your live stream encoder.

Start and monitor the stream. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and diagnostic messages while FFmpeg runs. A successful connection alone does not confirm that the picture and sound are healthy.
When to re-encode and when to copy
Re-encode when the source does not match the target
The command above explicitly scales and sets the frame rate, then encodes video and audio to the chosen formats. This gives you a predictable target but uses processing capacity. Confirm that the computer can encode the content in real time at 60 fps; if it cannot keep up, the stream may fall behind or become unstable.

Consider stream-copy only after checking the file
If the source already has suitable video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, keyframe cadence, timestamps, and container compatibility, copying the existing streams may avoid re-encoding. The cited documentation does not certify any particular file, so inspect and test your own source before relying on stream-copy. A connection that starts is not proof that its timestamps, keyframes, or audio will behave correctly throughout the broadcast.
Check bandwidth, audio, and stream health
- Allow upload headroom. Your available upload capacity should reliably exceed the stream’s total bitrate, including audio and network overhead. YouTube recommends checking upload speed before streaming.
- Test representative content. Before the event, test a section with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static image or silent segment will not reveal every issue.
- Use diagnostics to isolate faults. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents health diagnostics for low bitrate, unsupported video codec, keyframe intervals that are too long, and multiple audio or video streams.
- Keep the stream key secure. Do not publish it in a command screenshot, public script, or shared log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the FFmpeg command.

Common problems and fixes

RTMPS versus HLS ingestion
For the straightforward FFmpeg file-to-YouTube workflow described here, RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended default. HLS is also supported for suitable workflows, but it is segment-based, usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion, and has separate container and segment requirements, including AAC audio. It is not a drop-in replacement for the FLV/RTMPS command above. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.
Keep the YouTube broadcast eligible and rights-cleared
Technical compliance does not establish that you have the right to stream the video or its music, nor does it determine whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current policies for copyright and reused content before scheduling a stream. A successful FFmpeg connection cannot prevent a copyright claim or resolve a monetization-policy decision.
