The right WordPress screenshot plugin depends on what you want to capture. To embed another website as a thumbnail, Browser Screenshots uses WordPress.com’s mshots service. To save a screenshot of a WordPress admin page to your own Media Library, Admin Screenshots is designed for that task. Capture and Urlbox Screenshots call external screenshot APIs and can offer broader rendering options, but require external accounts and send capture data to those services.

Before choosing, decide whether you need an externally hosted preview, a local media file, an admin-screen capture, or automated screenshots and PDFs. Then check the plugin’s current compatibility and data handling. The details below reflect official listings and documentation checked on October 3, 2026; plugin status and version information can change.

Choose by the screenshot you need

What you want Option to investigate What to expect
Show a preview image of an arbitrary website URL in a post or page Browser Screenshots / Browser Shots A shortcode or editor control embeds an image rendered through WordPress.com mshots. The image is hosted externally, not saved in your Media Library.
Capture a page inside WordPress admin and save a shareable image Admin Screenshots Adds a screenshot control to admin pages and saves captures in the site’s uploads/Media Library area.
Render external URLs with options such as full-page or selector captures, or generate PDFs Capture – Screenshots & PDF Uses the Capture service and requires an account and API credentials; target URLs, parameters, and credentials are sent to the service.
Embed external-URL captures through a paid API Urlbox Screenshots A shortcode-based plugin for the Urlbox API; account, API key, and secret are required.

These tools solve different problems, so installation counts or a feature list alone do not tell you which is best. Consider where the image must live, whether it must show a particular viewport or page element, and whether sending the target URL and credentials to a third party is acceptable.

Embed an external website preview with Browser Screenshots

Browser Screenshots (also referred to as Browser Shots) is the simplest fit when you want a screenshot-like preview of another URL in WordPress content. Its listing describes a [browser-shot] shortcode and an editor control, with rendering provided by WordPress.com’s mshots functionality.

The trade-off is ownership: WordPress.org’s plugin listing says, “The images are stored on the wordpress.com servers and are not saved onto your own website.” The listing describes roughly 24-hour caching before an image is generated again. It also says the service is free for non-commercial use, while cautioning that this could change. Do not treat it as a way to create a permanent local PNG or Media Library asset.

As of WordPress.org’s 2026 directory listing, Browser Screenshots showed version 1.7.7, 3,000+ active installations, tested up to WordPress 6.5.0, and a warning that it had not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases. Those figures are a directory snapshot, not evidence of quality or ongoing maintenance. Check the live listing and test it on a staging site before depending on it.

Save a screenshot of a WordPress admin page

Admin Screenshots addresses a different workflow from external URL previews: it adds a screenshot button to WordPress admin pages, captures the page in the browser, and saves the result under the site’s uploads/Media Library area. The plugin listing says the resulting image can be shared without granting someone backend access, which can be useful for support handoffs or internal documentation.

The listing also warns that some form controls may not render perfectly, attributing this to its HTML2Canvas-based approach. Its FAQ described full-page capture as “Working on it,” so confirm the current listing if you need content below the visible screen. Capture a test image of the exact admin screen and form fields you intend to share; do not assume that every control will appear exactly as it does in the live interface.

Use an API-backed plugin for broader rendering options

Capture – Screenshots & PDF

Capture – Screenshots & PDF provides WordPress shortcodes backed by Capture (capture.page). The plugin documentation describes viewport dimensions, full-page screenshots, element selection, image formats, dark mode, delay and wait options, device emulation, and PDF formats. These are documented options, not independent findings about capture accuracy or speed.

The listing states requirements of a Capture API account, WordPress 4.7 or later, and PHP 7.4 or later. It also says the third-party service receives the target URL, capture parameters, and API credentials whenever a shortcode is processed, and calls the external service essential to the plugin’s core functionality. That data flow matters if the URLs or credentials are sensitive, or if your site must avoid external rendering services.

At the time checked, the listing showed version 1.2.1, 10+ active installations, and tested up to WordPress 7.0.6. These are volatile WordPress.org metadata, not a reliability score. Verify the current requirements and plugin status before installation.

Urlbox Screenshots

Urlbox Screenshots uses a shortcode to place screenshots in posts or pages through the Urlbox API. Its listing describes full-page screenshots and thumbnail sizing, and requires a Urlbox account, API key, and secret. It explicitly identifies the API as a paid service; check Urlbox’s current terms and pricing directly rather than assuming a particular trial or plan.

At the time checked, the WordPress.org listing showed version 1.6.1, tested up to WordPress 6.6.8, last updated two years earlier, and warned that it had not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases. Check the current listing’s compatibility and update history before installing. Urlbox’s technical documentation describes a stitched scrolling mode intended to handle more page behaviors and a native browser mode intended to be faster but less reliable on some pages; these are vendor descriptions, not independent performance measurements. Its documentation also describes CSS-selector element captures.

Check compatibility, output ownership, and data flow before installing

  • Confirm the target. A screenshot of an outside website, your own front end, and a WordPress admin screen are distinct tasks. Verify that the plugin captures the one you need.
  • Check where the file goes. A remote image embed is not equivalent to a downloadable image in your Media Library. If you need to retain, annotate, or reuse a file, confirm that the plugin saves one locally.
  • Check rendering scope. Confirm whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page, and whether it supports the target width, selected element, or device emulation you require.
  • Understand what leaves your site. For API-backed plugins, review what is sent—including URLs, capture parameters, and credentials—and assess whether that is acceptable for your site’s content and security requirements.
  • Review current maintenance signals. Check the live WordPress.org listing for tested WordPress and PHP versions, update history, compatibility notices, and support activity. A listed active-installation count is not proof of compatibility or quality.
  • Test the actual page. Render the same page, viewport, forms, images, and overlays you intend to publish. A shortcode that works on a simple page may not produce the output you expect on a page with dynamic content.

The WordPress.org screenshot tag page also lists related tools such as WP Screenshot, WP Featured Screenshot, Super Link Preview, ShrinkTheWeb Website Previews, JSM Screenshot Machine Shortcode, Website Screenshot to Media Library, and CaptureMyPage. It includes tools for adjacent jobs, such as generating screenshots when posts or pages are updated and editing or annotating existing screenshots. These listings are not interchangeable: check each plugin’s live description and compatibility details against your specific workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need to capture an external URL without setting up a WordPress screenshot plugin or browser-rendering workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It can return a screenshot or PDF; its API base is documented here.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
