To use YouTube Live’s ultra-low latency mode with an OBS playlist, select Ultra-low latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room under Stream Settings → Stream latency. In OBS, add the playlist separately with a VLC Video source. YouTube says most viewers will experience less than five seconds of latency in ultra-low mode, but buffering is more likely, network ingest problems have greater impact, and 4K is not supported. YouTube’s latency guidance describes typical performance, not a guarantee for a particular stream.

Choose a latency mode that suits the stream

Lower latency shortens the delay between OBS sending video and viewers receiving it. YouTube achieves this partly by reducing the player’s read-ahead buffer, leaving less room to absorb changes in internet speed. A connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate—or congestion along the way—can therefore cause buffering or delay.

YouTube mode Best fit, according to YouTube Typical latency description Trade-offs
Normal Non-interactive streams No typical seconds figure stated Lowest buffering; all resolutions and live features supported.
Low Limited audience interaction Most viewers under 10 seconds More buffering than normal may occur; 4K is unsupported.
Ultra-low Real-time audience conversation Most viewers under 5 seconds Buffering is more likely, ingest problems affect viewers more, and 4K is unsupported.

These are YouTube’s typical-experience descriptions, not a measured or promised delay for your encoder, viewer, device, or network. If the stream is primarily a continuous playlist with little real-time conversation, normal latency may be the more reliable choice. Use ultra-low when the interaction benefit is worth its tighter buffering margin.

Set up YouTube and OBS

1. Select ultra-low latency in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or open the stream in Live Control Room.
  2. Open Stream Settings and find Stream latency. Depending on the interface, enter the stream through Stream or Manage.
  3. Choose Ultra-low latency. If the option is unavailable, check whether the stream is configured to use HLS; YouTube turns off ultra-low latency when HLS is selected.

YouTube interface labels can vary slightly. See Manage live stream settings.

2. Build the playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; for 64-bit OBS, the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.
  2. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, then configure the media items in its playlist.
  3. Set Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist according to the intended program.
  4. Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents a default that stops playback when the source is not visible and restarts it when visible. If your show switches scenes, confirm this behavior matches your plan.
  5. Use Media Source only for a single file; for a multi-item playlist, use VLC Video.

The VLC playlist controls playback inside OBS. They do not set YouTube’s delivery latency. OBS documents Windows, macOS, and Linux support for the source, with VLC required on each platform. See OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

3. Match encoder settings to your connection

Choose bitrate and resolution your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends assessing upload bitrate with a speed test, then testing the complete stream with representative audio and movement before the event. Its encoder settings guide provides its current recommendations for encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Do not select 4K for an ultra-low-latency stream: YouTube says low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K, and its encoder guidance describes 2160p as optimized for normal latency. If 4K is essential, choose normal latency instead.

4. Use an ingest protocol compatible with ultra-low latency

YouTube turns off the ultra-low-latency option when HLS is selected. HLS delivers video in segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP; its setup guidance calls for segment durations of 1–4 seconds, but those segments do not restore YouTube’s ultra-low option. If ultra-low latency is the goal, use an ingest path compatible with that setting rather than HLS. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

5. Test and monitor before and during the stream

  1. Run a private or otherwise suitable test with the same playlist, audio, resolution, bitrate, scene changes, and ingest route you plan to use.
  2. Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and review messages while live.
  3. If stream health reports problems, reduce bitrate if your connection cannot sustain it, or switch to a less aggressive latency mode if buffering persists.

These adjustments address YouTube’s stated network and buffering trade-offs; none guarantees a particular end-to-end delay. A playlist, scene transition, or particular OBS cache value should not be treated as a way to force a specific viewer latency.

Understand DVR and viewer controls

DVR is separate from the latency setting. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. Disabling it prevents seeking back during the event, although a recording may still be watchable when available. YouTube does not say that disabling DVR lowers end-to-end latency, so do not use it as an ultra-low-latency optimization.

You can change DVR while live, but the change applies to viewers who start playback after the change. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable; Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions may have lower limits. Details: Turn on DVR on live streams.

Common problems and what to check

  • Ultra-low latency is missing: Check whether the stream uses HLS. YouTube disables the ultra-low option with HLS; HLS’s 1–4 second segment setting does not change that.
  • Viewers report buffering: Ultra-low mode has less buffer to absorb speed variation. Check stream health and upload capacity; reduce bitrate or try low or normal latency.
  • The stream is delayed despite the OBS playlist: The playlist controls OBS playback, not YouTube delivery. Check the selected YouTube latency mode and ingest conditions; test with the actual viewer setup because no exact delay is guaranteed.
  • The VLC Video source does not appear: Install VLC, matching the OBS architecture. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • Playlist playback stops or restarts after a scene change: Check VLC Video’s behavior when the source is not visible and adjust it to suit scene switching.
  • You need 4K: Ultra-low latency does not support it. Use normal latency for 4K delivery.

Or let it run in the cloud
