If Thumbalizr will not generate, display, or embed a screenshot in Chrome, first identify whether you are using Thumbalizr’s website, its API/embed code, or a separate Chrome extension. For API requests, check the X-Thumbalizr-Status and X-Thumbalizr-Error response headers; they help distinguish a capture still in progress from a failed request. A Chrome problem is only one possibility—request encoding, account limits, and service-side processing can also matter.
First identify where the failure occurs
Thumbalizr is an online website screenshot and thumbnail service with a web interface and an API; it is not inherently a Chrome extension. The right checks depend on how you start the capture:
- Thumbalizr website: enter a target URL on the service’s site. Note any message shown there and whether a result appears.
- API or embedded thumbnail: inspect the HTTP response and the Thumbalizr-specific headers.
- Separate Chrome extension: troubleshoot the extension and Chrome policies as well as the screenshot request. Do not assume extension guidance applies to Thumbalizr’s hosted site or API.
For API calls, Thumbalizr documents three possible values in X-Thumbalizr-Status: QUEUED, OK, and FAILED. QUEUED means processing is ongoing; OK means Thumbalizr reports the capture is complete; FAILED means the capture failed. Read X-Thumbalizr-Error for the reported reason. Check the API request and embed token
If the request is rejected or the embed does not load, verify the request before changing Chrome settings. Thumbalizr warns that API parameters must be encoded correctly, especially the destination URL. Encode the URL as a query parameter rather than inserting it unescaped into a query string; reserved characters such as & inside the target URL can otherwise be interpreted as separators between API parameters.

- Compare the requested destination and all parameter names and values with the current API documentation.
- For the Embed API, confirm that the token was generated from the query string plus the account secret as the documentation specifies. A changed query string, incorrect secret, or mismatched token can make a request invalid.
- Keep API keys and secrets private. Do not post them in a public support thread or paste them into an issue report.
- Record the HTTP response and both Thumbalizr headers. The documentation does not enumerate every possible error string, so use the exact returned message rather than guessing at its cause.
A malformed URL or token is a request-level possibility, not a confirmed diagnosis for every failed screenshot.
Tell a plan limit apart from a capture failure
Thumbalizr’s Features & Pricing page lists the free plan as allowing 100 captures per month. It also lists a fixed 1280×1024 browser viewport, screen-size rather than full-page captures, and a watermark for the free tier. Those restrictions can explain a quota issue, a cropped-looking result, or a watermark; they do not explain every blank image or failed request.

Check your current usage and plan against the live Thumbalizr Features & Pricing page. Plan features and prices can change, so verify them there before making an account decision. If the result is cropped, compare the requested capture size and viewport with what your plan supports before treating the crop as a Chrome rendering defect.
Account for Thumbalizr’s backend transition
In a post dated 2026-04-08, Thumbalizr said it was migrating screenshot rendering from Browshot to ScreenshotCenter in phases: new accounts first, with existing accounts moved in batches. The company stated, “Your existing integrations, API calls, embed codes, and settings remain unchanged.” The announcement describes faster processing and fewer errors or timeouts as goals, but it is not an outage notice and does not establish that the transition caused a particular user’s error. If a problem persists, check the service’s current status or contact Thumbalizr with the capture time, target URL, status, and error header. See the Thumbalizr migration announcement.

When Chrome or an organization’s policy may be involved
For Thumbalizr’s website or API, begin with the service’s own response and account information. Chrome enterprise restrictions become relevant if you have confirmed that you use a separate extension or an integration relying on Chrome’s debugger API. Google documents that enterprise host restrictions and screenshot or data-loss-prevention policies can prevent debugger attachment or capture. Such a policy is a plausible cause on a managed device, not evidence that Thumbalizr’s hosted interface uses that API.
If an extension is involved, check whether your organization manages Chrome and ask its administrator whether the extension is allowed to access the relevant site or capture screen content. Extension developers should also check Chrome’s guidance on correct extension packaging, communicating errors, and handling network timeouts and HTTP 400/500 responses. Troubleshoot by symptom

Thumbalizr is a web-based screenshot service with a website and API. A separate extension may be part of your workflow, but Thumbalizr itself should not be assumed to be one.
