To send 4K at 60 frames per second to YouTube Live, set your encoder’s video output to 3840×2160 at 60fps. YouTube normally detects that output automatically. If you need to select it in Live Control Room, create a custom stream key and enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. The manual setting does not turn a lower-resolution encoder signal into 4K.

Set YouTube Live to receive 4K60

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Stream tab to manage the stream and its key. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to set these manually, create a custom stream key and, under Stream Resolution, turn on Turn on manual settings. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance describes both options.
  3. In your encoder, set the video output to 3840×2160 (2160p), 60fps. YouTube detects the signal the encoder sends; choosing a 4K setting in Live Control Room cannot upscale an encoder output that is below 4K.
  4. Select a supported codec and configure its bitrate, then set the keyframe interval and rate control as described below.
  5. Start a test stream, check its preview in Live Control Room, and monitor stream health and any messages before and during the actual broadcast.

The names and locations of resolution controls inside the encoder vary by software or hardware. Confirm that the source, encoder, and the full signal path support 3840×2160 at 60fps; YouTube’s general guidance does not establish compatibility for every specific device.

Choose bitrate and encoder settings

YouTube’s currently opened English-language encoder guidance lists the following recommendations for 4K/2160p at 60fps. The page does not display a publication date; these figures were accessed in 2026.

Encoder codec YouTube-recommended bitrate at 4K60
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 35 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular network or encoder can sustain the stream. Check that your upload connection can maintain the bitrate you select; YouTube advises testing upload speed. Choose among codecs your encoder supports rather than assuming one is best for every setup.

  • DUAL MONITOR OUTPUTS – Features both SDI and HDMI monitor outputs with a user-configurable standards converter on both the 12G-SDI Out and 4K HDMI Out, so you can feed a confidence monitor or downstream device at any required format independent of your streaming standard.
  • ETHERNET + 5G/4G MOBILE WITH AUTO-FAILOVER – Connect via Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T) or tether a smartphone via USB-C for mobile data, with automatic switchover between connections — ensuring your stream stays on air even if the primary internet connection drops.
  • CLOSED CAPTIONS, TIMECODE & REST API – Supports embedding CEA-608 and CEA-708 closed captions in live RTMP streams, source timecode over RTMP and SRT, and offers a REST API over Ethernet for external HTTP control — ideal for broadcast automation and accessibility-compliant workflows.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Protocol and frame rate: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60fps. Check that your chosen encoder supports the combination you plan to use.
  • Latency: YouTube says the low-latency optimization option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; they use normal latency.

See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current guidance.

Understand what the resolution setting changes

The setting concerns the resolution and frame rate sent from your encoder to YouTube. It is separate from the quality a viewer selects: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats for different devices and network conditions. A viewer may therefore see different available playback options from the encoder’s 4K60 input.

Blackmagic Design Streaming Encoder 4K
  • H.264 & H.265 Streaming to SRT or RTMP
  • DCI 4K Streaming up to 60 fps
  • SDI & HDMI Monitor Outputs
  • USB-C for Phone Tethering & Webcam Out
  • Front Panel Buttons & Spin Knob

Manual selection is optional. If automatic detection correctly recognizes the encoder output, you do not need to switch to a custom key just to send 4K60. Use the manual option when you specifically need to choose the resolution through the stream key’s settings.

Test the full stream before going live

A 4K60 setting is only useful if the complete production chain can deliver it consistently. Before an important broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned content, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and watch stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; its general documentation does not verify the 4K60 capability of individual cameras, capture devices, computers, or encoders. • HDMI + SDI Inputs in One Device – Use either HDMI or SDI input, or combine both with picture-in-picture or side-by-side layouts for flexible workflows.
  • High-Resolution 4K Encoding – Supports HDMI up to 4096×2160p60 and SDI up to 4096×2160p30 with H.264 or HEVC compression for broadcast-quality output.
  • Multi-Protocol & Multi-Destination Streaming – Stream to up to six destinations simultaneously using RTMP, RTMPS, SRT, NDI|HX2/HX3, HLS, TS over UDP/RTP, and more.
  • Onboard Video Processing & Overlays – Includes de-interlacing, aspect ratio conversion, scaling, cropping, color format conversion, and up to eight text/image/clock overlays.
  • Simultaneous Streaming & Recording – Record to SD card, USB storage, or network drives while streaming live; supports loop recording and scheduled captures.

YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. A capture card may be needed when routing a camera or console into a computer, but it is not the Live Control Room resolution control, and buying one does not itself enable 4K60. Check compatibility across the source, capture path, encoder, and output settings. YouTube’s encoder overview includes software and hardware workflows: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot when YouTube does not show 4K60

  • The stream appears below 4K: Check the encoder’s actual output resolution, not just a profile name or the manual stream-key setting. Confirm it sends 3840×2160.
  • The stream is below 60fps: Check the encoder output and source frame rate. A 4K label alone does not confirm a 60fps signal.
  • Manual resolution is missing: Confirm you created a custom stream key, then look under Stream Resolution for Turn on manual settings. Automatic detection is the default recommendation.
  • The stream is unstable or reports health problems: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected codec’s recommended bitrate, and test the setup before the broadcast. Review the stream-health messages rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.
  • Viewers cannot select 4K: Distinguish the encoder’s input resolution from YouTube’s transcoded playback formats. Check the stream preview and YouTube’s processing rather than treating the encoder setting as a promise about every viewer’s device or network.
  • You expected low latency: 4K/2160 streams use normal latency; YouTube does not offer its low-latency optimization option for them.
