Keep the old VPS available as a rollback option until the new setup is stable. A local auto-restart service does not by itself prove YouTube is receiving a valid broadcast.
What changes when you migrate a 24/7 stream?
A VPS migration moves more than video files. The encoder may rely on absolute paths, a particular service account, environment variables, playlists, firewall rules or scheduled jobs. Missing any of these can leave the process running but unable to deliver the expected stream.
The steps below use FFmpeg and systemd on Ubuntu as a practical example, not a universal recipe. If you use OBS, preserve its profile and verify its scenes, inputs and stream settings on the new machine; an FFmpeg service is not a drop-in replacement for an OBS setup.
How do I migrate a 24/7 YouTube stream to a new VPS?
1. Record the current working setup
Do this before provisioning or stopping the old host. Record configuration details, but do not put the stream key itself in notes, screenshots or a public ticket.

- Encoder name and version, or the OBS profile and relevant settings.
- Input sources, including local media, playlists, mounted storage, camera inputs or relay URLs.
- The destination URL and protocol, plus the secure location where the stream key is stored.
- Service account, working directory, environment files, service definition, restart policy and whether the service starts at boot.
- Log locations, monitoring, watchdog scripts, cron timers, scheduled restarts and alerts.
- Host and provider firewall rules, DNS names and network allowlists.
- Output resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, bitrate and custom encoder flags.
This inventory is an operational checklist, not a YouTube-mandated form. It helps you compare the new server with the known-good configuration.
2. Prepare the replacement VPS
Where practical, use the same operating-system family and install the encoder dependencies used by the current host. Create the required service account and directories, check available disk space for media and logs, and confirm the new VPS is allowed to make outbound connections to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint.
Choose resources based on what the server actually does: encoding settings and whether the VPS encodes video or only relays it affect CPU, memory and network needs. Generic sample figures are not guarantees for your workload. For hosting, compare the destination region, sustained network capacity, storage and backup options, operating-system access, support and total cost for continuous outbound traffic.

3. Transfer files and configuration
Use a secure transfer method for media, playlists, scripts and service configuration. On the replacement, review every absolute path and file permission. Confirm that the service account can read the media and write to any required log or working directories. Keep the old host intact until validation succeeds.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not commit it to a repository or expose it in logs. If it has been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s stream settings and update the protected configuration on the new host.
4. Verify the YouTube destination
Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm which stream or broadcast the encoder should feed. Copy the current stream URL and key from its stream settings rather than relying on a possibly stale or masked value from the old server. YouTube says, “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” For RTMPS, select the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room; do not assume the ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. 5. Recreate process supervision
For a systemd-based FFmpeg service, adapt the unit to the new paths, account, environment and encoder command. Reload systemd, enable the service at boot if appropriate, start it and inspect both its status and logs. The example in this FFmpeg and systemd 24/7 streaming guide uses Restart=always, separate service names and journal logs; treat those as implementation examples to review, not requirements for every stream.
For OBS, carry over and verify the correct profile and stream settings on the new machine. OBS connection troubleshooting can help when the encoder does not connect, but the exact OBS setup depends on your existing configuration. OBS stream connection troubleshooting.

6. Validate before retiring the old VPS
- Start the encoder on the replacement host and inspect its logs for input, authentication and connection errors.
- Check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the intended stream.
- Inspect the actual live output for video, audio, the expected media rotation and stability.
- Test a service restart and, if your plan allows, a reboot; verify both local recovery and YouTube ingest afterward.
- Keep the old host available as a rollback route until the replacement has been confirmed healthy.
Whether you can test in parallel without interrupting the existing broadcast, or need a new YouTube event or key, depends on the current broadcast setup. Check Live Control Room before choosing the cutover method; there is no universal no-downtime procedure for every channel.

Do I need a new YouTube stream key when I change VPS?
A VPS move alone does not establish that you need a new key. Confirm the active stream settings in Live Control Room and use the key associated with the broadcast you intend to feed. If the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s settings and update the new server’s protected configuration. Keep keys out of source control and public logs.
How can I keep the stream running after a VPS reboot?
Configure the encoder to start at boot using the process supervisor already in use, such as a systemd service on Linux, and check its restart behavior. In the FFmpeg example, systemd manages the service and logs; the correct unit depends on your user, paths, environment and command. After enabling the service, test a restart and—if feasible—a reboot, then verify both the local process and YouTube’s ingest status. Automatic restart on the VPS is not proof that the public stream is healthy.
Troubleshooting a VPS migration

| Media is missing or audio and video are out of sync | Check transferred file paths, playlist entries, permissions and whether the encoder command’s looping and timing options were preserved. The required media layout and looping behavior are specific to the implementation. |
