OBS can keep sending a church’s prerecorded video to YouTube while its window is minimized to the system tray. Set up and test the stream first, make sure the video or playlist loops and remains visible in the active scene, then minimize OBS only after confirming that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed. Minimizing hides OBS; it does not prevent a computer sleeping, losing power or internet, OBS crashing, or YouTube disconnecting.
What minimizing OBS does—and does not do
OBS is still the encoder sending video and audio to YouTube when its window is minimized. Minimizing changes how OBS appears on your desktop; it is not a keep-alive or recovery feature. OBS documents a --minimize-to-tray launch parameter, described as starting minimized to the system tray. Its separate --startstreaming parameter starts streaming automatically. These options do not guarantee that the computer, network, OBS process, or YouTube stream will remain available.
For a church service, use minimization only after a local end-to-end test. Confirm the loop, sound, stream preview, and YouTube watch page, and arrange for someone to monitor the broadcast.
Prepare the scheduled YouTube stream
- Create or select the scheduled encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled livestream or create one, then find its stream settings. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the livestream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings for the YouTube service. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address: the key identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private; do not put it in a bulletin, public document, or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Choose RTMPS if you configure the ingest server manually and YouTube offers it. RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted ingest option; follow the server and key details shown for your stream. Do not substitute a guessed URL or another stream’s key. See YouTube’s RTMPS documentation.
Make the prerecorded video repeat in OBS
Loop one video file
- In the scene you will stream, add a Media Source and select the church’s video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties if the file should repeat continuously.
- Check that the source is visible in the active scene. If it is hidden behind another source or switched off, it will not appear in the program output.
- Play through the file’s ending and beginning. Confirm that the transition works as intended and that audio is audible, at an appropriate level, and free of an unexpected gap or abrupt change.
Loop a playlist
- Add a VLC Video source and create the playlist from the files you intend to show.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should restart after its last item.
- Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents the VLC Video default as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” Keep the source visible in the active scene so it does not stop playing when you switch scenes or hide it.
- Test the complete playlist, including the final item returning to the first, and check audio between files.
For either method, test the actual files and scene arrangement you plan to use. A loop setting alone does not confirm that the right source is on screen, the audio is routed, or the stream is reaching YouTube.

Start the stream, verify it, then minimize OBS
- Start OBS and confirm the intended scene and prerecorded source are active.
- Start sending the encoder feed early enough to inspect it. YouTube recommends starting at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream. Do not assume that OBS showing an active connection means the public stream looks or sounds right.
- Check the public watch page as well as the preview. YouTube recommends testing on the watch page and mobile devices and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Have someone verify the sound and picture during the service.
- Once the stream is confirmed, minimize OBS to the system tray. If you use OBS launch automation, its documented parameters include
--minimize-to-trayand--startstreaming. Test the exact launch behavior before relying on it on service day. - When the service is over, deliberately click End Stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement should not be treated as an archiving guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or more.
Keep the broadcast dependable while OBS is minimized
- Check power and sleep settings separately. Preventing the display from staying on is different from allowing the computer to sleep. Confirm the computer remains awake and plugged in for the full broadcast. Minimizing OBS does not change these settings.
- Check the connection and power path. A dropped home internet connection or power interruption can stop the feed even if OBS is minimized. Test from the location and network that will be used for the service.
- Assign a monitor. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of audio and video. Decide who can check the watch page and respond if the picture, sound, or connection fails.
- Do not treat launch parameters as recovery. Starting OBS minimized and automatically starting its stream can reduce manual steps, but the cited OBS documentation does not say those parameters restart OBS after a crash or reconnect a stream after every interruption.
- Check content rights before broadcasting. Use video and music the church has permission to stream on YouTube. A public or unlisted link does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies for the specific content.
Troubleshooting: OBS is minimized but the stream is not right
