To stream a prerecorded playlist to YouTube Live at 720p, add the files to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, set OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720, and send the feed to the event’s YouTube server URL with its stream key. Use 720p source files if you want to avoid enlarging lower-resolution footage, and keep OBS’s output at 1280×720 rather than selecting 1080p or 4K.
What “without upscaling” means
Setting OBS’s output to 1280×720 prevents OBS from being configured to produce a larger stream frame. It does not guarantee that every viewer receives an identical 720p rendition: YouTube transcodes live input into multiple formats for different devices and network conditions. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains that platform-side processing.
If a playlist includes files below 720p, putting them on a 1280×720 canvas does not create real source detail. For a practical no-upscale setup, use 1280×720 files, set the OBS output to 1280×720, and do not enlarge individual sources or choose a higher output resolution. OBS’s documentation describes output scaling, but does not establish a way to guarantee that every mixed-resolution file avoids all internal scaling.
Prepare the playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed, and the VLC and OBS architectures must match—for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. The OBS Media Sources guide lists common supported formats, including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- Add the source. In your scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Build the sequence. Add the video files to the source’s playlist in the order you want them to play. Enable Loop Playlist for continuous repeat playback; turn it off if the sequence should end. The option is on by default according to OBS documentation.
- Check source behavior. Review whether the source should continue, pause, or stop when hidden, particularly if you may switch scenes during the broadcast. Preview the end of one clip and start of the next to catch gaps or unexpected transitions.
Set the OBS canvas and output to 720p
- Open Settings → Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. This is the stream and recording output size. For a straightforward scene made from 720p assets, set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 1280×720 as well; the base resolution is the working canvas.
- Set Common FPS Values to a rate that matches the source motion, typically 30 or 60 fps. Check the playlist in preview to confirm motion looks right.
- For mixed aspect ratios, fit or contain each source while preserving its proportions if showing the whole image matters. This can leave bars. Avoid stretching footage just to fill the frame: stretching distorts the image. OBS identifies 1280×720 as 16:9 in its Sources Guide.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- Copy that event’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as password-like: it identifies where the encoder sends its feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private; do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or public instructions. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- If you use a custom stream key, YouTube’s encoder settings page says you can select manual resolution detection there. Otherwise, YouTube detects resolution and frame rate automatically. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Choose encoder settings for 720p
YouTube’s current English-language encoder table recommends the following H.264 video bitrate for both listed 720p input rates. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a 720p playback option.

| Input setting | YouTube H.264 video bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
In OBS’s output or encoder settings, use these baseline values for an H.264 stream:
- Rate control: CBR.
- Video bitrate: 8,000 Kbps.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s detailed audio guidance specifies 128 Kbps for stereo.
- Transport: RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends it for encrypted delivery.
YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 ingest. Codec availability depends on the encoder you use; H.264 is a practical baseline for a straightforward OBS software workflow. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations.

Test the stream and monitor its health
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with representative clips, movement, and audio before the real broadcast.
- Confirm the playlist advances and loops—or stops—according to your choice, and that there is no blank interval between files.
- Check that audio is present and at an acceptable level, OBS preview is 1280×720, and YouTube receives the signal.
- Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total bitrate required for primary, backup, and other streams.
- Preview the event before starting and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers recommended settings, while its streaming tips discuss testing and monitoring.
Copyright and playlist rights
Use only video and audio you have the right to stream. A playlist being prerecorded does not exempt it from copyright rules. Before going live, check that you have permission for every clip, music track, image, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable policies for your channel and content. Stream-health checks confirm the technical feed, not whether the content is authorized.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from OBS sources | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS, then reopen OBS. |
| Output is larger than 720p | Output (Scaled) Resolution is set above 1280×720. | In Settings → Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280×720. |
| Image looks stretched or cropped | Source dimensions or aspect ratio do not match the scene, or the source was stretched to fill. | Fit or contain the source while preserving proportions; check each differently sized playlist item. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The server URL or stream key may not match the selected live event. | Copy both values from that event’s Live Control Room again. Treat the key as private. |
| Playback stalls or YouTube reports stream-health problems | Upload capacity may be insufficient, or the configured bitrate may not match the connection. | Check upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; monitor stream-health messages. |
| Playlist stops after the last file | Loop Playlist is disabled. | Enable Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source if the sequence should repeat. |
| Clip transitions appear blank or unexpected | Source visibility behavior or differing media dimensions may affect playback. | Check source behavior when hidden and preview the transitions with the intended scene sequence. |
