OBS Replay Buffer and a prerecorded YouTube service do two different jobs: Replay Buffer saves a short segment of recent OBS output after you trigger it; it does not play, schedule, or start the service. To save clips, enable and start the buffer, then assign a save hotkey. To broadcast the prerecorded service, schedule a YouTube live event, send the prepared OBS scene to that event, check the preview, and go live in YouTube Studio.

Replay Buffer vs. recording vs. prerecorded playback

Replay Buffer continuously holds a recent portion of OBS output so you can save that portion when needed. It must be running before the moment you want to keep; pressing Save Replay Buffer does not retrieve footage from before the buffer started. It is useful for short retrospective clips, not for capturing an entire service by itself.

OBS function What it does Use it when
Replay Buffer Saves a recent segment of OBS output when triggered. You need a short clip of something that just happened.
Start Recording Starts a continuous recording file. You need a full local recording of the service or rehearsal.
Media source or other playout setup Sends the prepared prerecorded program into the OBS scene. You need to play the service through OBS to YouTube.

These functions can be used separately or together. A Replay Buffer clip is not a substitute for a continuous recording, and neither function automatically schedules or starts a YouTube event.

Set up and test OBS Replay Buffer

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Output and enable Replay Buffer. Choose a duration appropriate to the clip you may need and set a recording path the operator can locate. Longer buffers retain more recent footage and can demand more system resources; there is no universal duration or memory setting for every church computer. Test the chosen settings on the actual production system. (OBS Studio Overview Guide, August 25, 2021.)
  2. Open Settings → Hotkeys and assign a convenient key combination to Save Replay Buffer. Avoid a combination likely to be pressed accidentally during worship or playback. OBS also exposes hotkeys for starting and stopping the buffer. (OBS Studio Overview Guide.)
  3. Before the portion you might need, start Replay Buffer from the OBS controls. If you want OBS to start it automatically at launch, OBS documents the --startreplaybuffer launch parameter; test it with the church’s actual shortcut or launch method before relying on it. (OBS Launch Parameters, May 30, 2021.)
  4. Trigger Save Replay Buffer during a test, then open the configured folder and confirm the clip has usable picture and sound. Check that the selected OBS output includes the scene and audio you expect.
  5. If you need the whole service recorded locally, use Start Recording as well. OBS recommends MKV for ordinary recordings because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the entire file; OBS provides a built-in remux process to convert a recording to MP4. These recording recommendations do not repair a failed live stream or replace a Replay Buffer clip. (OBS Standard Recording Output Guide, May 26, 2023.)

A physical button controller is optional: a keyboard hotkey is sufficient. A programmable controller can be mapped to an OBS hotkey, but verify its operation with the church’s own setup rather than assuming compatibility from an older community tutorial.

Play a prerecorded service as a scheduled YouTube live stream

The workflow below is for an encoder-based scheduled live event. YouTube’s instructions cover connecting streaming software and starting the event; they do not establish one universal OBS media-source configuration for unattended playback, looping, or restarting. Rehearse those behaviors with the exact scene and file you intend to use.

  1. Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check well before the service date. (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.)
  2. Schedule or select the event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and schedule a live event or select the event already scheduled for the service. Scheduling allows you to promote the event and lets viewers receive reminders. Confirm the title, date, and privacy setting.
  3. Prepare the OBS scene. Add or select the source that will play the prerecorded service. Confirm the video is visible and its sound reaches the stream mix. Rehearse how the file starts and ends, and whether it must be manually restarted or looped. Do not assume it will play unattended merely because the source appears in the scene.
  4. Connect OBS to the selected event. Copy that event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Verify you have selected the correct event before sending anything; using the wrong key or event can send the feed somewhere other than the intended scheduled service.
  5. Send the feed and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then wait for the event preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check picture and sound, and reconfirm the event title, date, and privacy before clicking Go live in YouTube Studio. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)
  6. End the event deliberately. When the service is over, end the event in Live Control Room and stop OBS from sending the feed, following the controls shown for the encoder workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)

Check music and other rights before the service

YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” (YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.) If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated.

Having a licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says licensed content may still be interrupted unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the stream ends if the video is archived. Before broadcasting, confirm the rights for music, video, and other third-party material in the prerecorded program, and coordinate Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner when applicable. (YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.)

Keep rehearsal and service setups organized

If you maintain separate OBS settings for rehearsal and service, Profiles can store most output settings and can be switched between. Profiles do not store Scenes, so pair profile management with the relevant Scene Collection and verify both before going live. (OBS Profiles, January 14, 2022.)

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No replay clip is saved Replay Buffer was not enabled or started before the moment; the save hotkey may also be unassigned. Enable it in Settings → Output, start it from the OBS controls, check Settings → Hotkeys, and verify the configured file path.
The saved clip is missing picture or sound The active scene, output mix, or selected source may not match what you expected. Make a short test clip and inspect both image and audio before the service.
The prerecorded file does not start, continue, or loop as expected The playout behavior depends on the particular OBS source and setup; a visible source is not proof of unattended operation. Rehearse the complete program using the same scene, file, and control sequence planned for the event; determine whether manual restart or looping is needed.
YouTube preview does not show the expected event feed The event selection, stream URL, or stream key may be wrong, or the feed may not yet be ready. Recheck the selected scheduled event and its connection details in YouTube Studio, then wait for and inspect the preview before going live.
The stream is interrupted or replaced YouTube may have detected third-party content, or there may be a rights or Content ID allowlisting issue. Review the program’s rights and coordinate allowlisting with the rights owner where applicable; do not assume a licence alone prevents interruption.
The channel cannot start a live stream The channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility conditions or first-time enablement may still be pending. Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions well in advance; enablement can take up to 24 hours.
