You can make a YouTube thumbnail in Canva without paying: open Canva, search for YouTube Thumbnail, customize a template or start with a blank design, then download it as a JPG or PNG. For a standard video, use a 16:9 layout; check YouTube’s file-size limit for the device you’ll use to upload it.
Make a standard YouTube thumbnail in Canva
- Open the right canvas. In Canva, search for “YouTube Thumbnail” and choose that design type. Start with a template or a blank canvas. Canva describes the format as 16:9. Its YouTube thumbnail maker offers templates and JPEG or PNG downloads, but not every template, asset, or feature is necessarily free.
- Customize the design. Replace the template’s text and images with material that accurately represents your video. Keep the main subject and message clear, and make text large enough to read at small sizes. YouTube advises against overly complex thumbnail designs. Its Help page says, “90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails.” That is YouTube’s own guidance, not evidence that a custom thumbnail alone causes a video to perform better. - Download the image. Use Canva’s download option and choose JPG or PNG. Canva describes JPEG as a smaller-file option and PNG as a high-quality option. Check the downloaded file’s dimensions and size before uploading; the size limit depends on whether you upload from mobile or desktop.
- Upload it in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Content, and open the video. Use the thumbnail upload control to select the image, then save your changes. Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified account, and the image must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube notes that an updated thumbnail may take time to appear. Follow YouTube’s thumbnail upload instructions.
Choose the right thumbnail size and file format
For a standard video, YouTube recommends a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. YouTube’s current Help guidance lists a maximum file size of 2 MB when uploading a video thumbnail from mobile and 50 MB from desktop. These are device-specific limits, not one universal 2 MB cap. Use YouTube’s current thumbnail specifications as the upload authority.
Canva’s maker page gives 1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9, and 2 MB as general guidance. That differs from YouTube’s current recommendation and desktop limit. In practice, prioritize YouTube’s applicable upload rules; if uploading from mobile, keep the file at or under 2 MB.

Standard video thumbnails and Shorts are different
Do not assume the standard video workflow or aspect ratio applies to Shorts. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends 16:9 for standard video thumbnails and 9:16 for Shorts. The same guidance says custom Shorts thumbnail uploads are currently available through YouTube Studio on a computer, and the account must be verified. Check YouTube’s thumbnail instructions for the current Shorts process, since platform features can change.

Common problems and fixes
- You can’t upload a custom thumbnail: Check that your account is verified and that you are following the upload path for the video type. For Shorts, YouTube currently specifies Studio on a computer.
- YouTube rejects the file: Confirm that the image is in an accepted format such as JPG or PNG and meets the size limit for the device you are using. A file that meets the desktop limit may exceed the mobile limit.
- The image looks cluttered or its text is hard to read: Remove secondary details, simplify the layout, and make the key words and subject more prominent. YouTube advises against overly complex thumbnail designs.
- The new thumbnail is not visible yet: YouTube says changes can take time to appear. Save the update and allow time for it to show.
- The thumbnail is unsuitable under YouTube rules: A correct size and format do not exempt an image from YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Review those rules before using the design.
