First identify which connection failed: FFmpeg’s documented reconnect options apply to HTTP(S) inputs, not universally to the RTMP(S) output that publishes to YouTube. For a publishing failure, verify the current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream key, check FFmpeg and outbound network health, then test how your setup recovers when its input, connection, or process fails. A retry flag alone cannot keep a dead encoder running or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.

Identify the failing connection before changing options

FFmpeg may be reading a podcast source from an HTTP(S) URL while sending its output to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. Those are separate connections and need separate troubleshooting. HTTP reconnect flags do not automatically repair a failed YouTube publishing connection.

  1. Capture the first error. Record your FFmpeg version and build, the command with secrets removed, whether the failure occurred at the input or publishing URL, its protocol (http, https, rtmp, or rtmps), and the first error line before retries begin.
  2. Protect the stream key. Do not share it in logs, screenshots, or support posts. Treat it like a password.
  3. Classify the symptom. An input reaching EOF, a mid-stream disconnect, a TCP/TLS error, an HTTP error response, and a rejected YouTube publishing destination are not the same failure.

FFmpeg documents its reconnect controls under the HTTP protocol; check what your installed build supports with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key for the publishing destination. FFmpeg protocol documentation · YouTube: Go live with an encoder

Choose HTTP input retry settings for the actual failure

Use the HTTP options only when the source FFmpeg reads is HTTP(S). Put each option before the -i for that input, because it configures that input. Do not place these options before an RTMP(S) output and assume they reconnect YouTube publishing.

Input symptom Relevant HTTP option What it does
Connection drops before the source reaches EOF -reconnect 1 Retries a disconnection before EOF.
An endless or live source returns EOF -reconnect_at_eof 1 Treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection; FFmpeg describes this as useful for live or endless streams.
The input is streamed or non-seekable -reconnect_streamed 1 Allows reconnection on errors for streamed inputs.
TCP or TLS connection error -reconnect_on_network_error 1 Handles network errors during connection.
The server returns an HTTP error status -reconnect_on_http_error 5xx Allows retries for specified HTTP status codes or classes; choose the values appropriate to the source.

For example, a command reading an endless HTTP source can put its input options before that input:

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_on_network_error 1 -reconnect_on_http_error 5xx -i "https://example.invalid/live" [your encoding options] -f flv "[YouTube publishing URL and key]"

This is a placement illustration, not a tested, ready-to-run broadcast command: replace the example input and bracketed output with your actual source, encoding options, and current YouTube destination. Confirm option availability and syntax against your installed build. Set sensible retry delays and limits for your situation rather than allowing an accidental indefinite wait. The FFmpeg reference documents these HTTP controls at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html.

Fix a failed YouTube publishing connection

“Connection timed out” or publishing will not connect

Check that the encoder host can make outbound connections and that the configured publishing destination matches the current value in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not assume an old URL is still the right one. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; select and copy the RTMPS URL if that is the destination you intend to use. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues · YouTube: Go live with an encoder

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“SSL errors” with RTMPS

Confirm that the destination uses the correct RTMPS URL and scheme. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes port 443 as a step to try for SSL errors. Check the instructions for your current encoder and network before changing firewall rules or destination settings. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues

Invalid or possibly exposed stream key

Copy the key for the intended stream from Live Control Room and confirm the encoder has no stale or mistyped value. If the key may have been shared or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. A reset key will not help until the encoder is also using it. Separate encoder faults from network faults

A connection retry cannot fix an encoder that has stopped producing audio or video. Check whether FFmpeg is still running, whether its input is advancing, and whether audio and video are being produced. Inspect CPU load and any local recording or other output you have configured to help distinguish an encoding problem from a publishing problem.

  • Encoder or source issue: If FFmpeg exits, stalls, or loses its source, fix that failure and establish how the process will be restarted. An HTTP retry option does not restart an exited FFmpeg process.
  • Outbound connection issue: Check upload connectivity from the machine actually running FFmpeg. A download-speed result does not establish that this host can sustain the stream’s upload.
  • Insufficient upload capacity: YouTube advises that the stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If other people or devices share the connection, account for their use and test the encoder host’s outbound capacity.
  • Unstable physical or Wi-Fi link: Check for intermittent network loss. A wired connection may be a useful diagnostic if Wi-Fi is suspect, but changing cables is not a guaranteed fix.

Test recovery before calling the stream continuous

A stream can fail even when retry flags are present: retries may be bounded, the source may disappear, the route may fail, YouTube may reject the endpoint or key, or the FFmpeg process may exit. Test each failure mode you rely on, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during a representative preflight.

  1. Confirm the stream starts with the intended input, encoding settings, and current YouTube destination.
  2. Test what happens if the HTTP input ends or disconnects, if applicable. Confirm the configured retry behavior in your installed FFmpeg build.
  3. Test a loss of network connectivity and verify whether publishing resumes after the connection returns.
  4. Test what happens when FFmpeg exits. If you need automatic process recovery, configure and test a supervisor or an explicit restart/failover workflow; reconnect flags alone do not restart the process.
  5. If you have a YouTube backup encoder configured, follow YouTube’s failover test: stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet connection and confirm the player switches to the backup.

YouTube recommends representative testing and stream-health monitoring; a successful startup by itself does not prove recovery will work. YouTube: Troubleshoot live stream issues
