Choose what “silence” means for your stream
Decide what viewers should hear before building scenes or sources. “Silence” might mean no guided voice while music or nature ambience continues, or it might mean no audio at all. Those are different mixes and require different mute controls.
- Voice-free ambience: keep the ambience source active and mute or hide the narration source.
- True silence: mute all program audio sources, including ambience and any live microphone.
Use OBS’s mixer mute control and level meters to verify the quiet state. Rehearse the transition while monitoring the output; OBS warns that capturing the same device globally and again as a scene source can cause echo. See OBS audio mixer guidance.

OBS supports scenes, media and audio sources, hotkeys, and VLC Video Source playlists. OBS lists common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. For a playlist, confirm how the source behaves when each file ends and when it is hidden; do not assume that reaching a file boundary will preserve the intended live output. See OBS documentation.

Set up the guided and quiet states in OBS
Option A: Two scenes for manual switching
- In OBS, create a scene named Guided. Add the prerecorded narration as a Media Source, or add a live microphone through an Audio Input Capture source if you will speak during the stream. Add any ambience source you want to hear during guidance.
- Create a second scene named Silence. For voice-free ambience, include ambience but omit narration. For true silence, make sure the scene has no audible program sources.
- Set up a hotkey for each scene in OBS’s hotkey settings, or switch scenes manually from the Scenes panel. OBS supports hotkeys for switching to a specific scene and for push-to-mute.
- Test both transitions while watching the mixer meters and listening to the program output. Confirm that narration stops cleanly, the intended ambience remains or stops, and narration returns at the right level.
Option B: One scene with independently controlled sources
- Add narration and ambience as separate sources in the same scene. This gives you independent control over the voice and the background sound.
- For the quiet interval, mute or hide narration only if ambience should remain; mute all program sources if you want total silence.
- Use a hotkey or the mixer mute button for the transition. Verify the meters and actual output rather than relying only on what the preview looks like.
Option C: A prerecorded playlist
If the guided sections are a sequence of recordings, add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist. VLC must be installed for this source. Check the playlist’s looping or shuffle settings, and test the end of every file, source visibility, and the intended transition into a quiet segment before going live. The OBS documentation describes playlist and visibility behavior, but it does not prescribe meditation interval lengths or a particular transition duration.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder stream and open its Live Control Room. Confirm that your channel can start the event and that the current controls are available for your account.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or expose it in a recording or public screen capture.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before the event. Keep the same YouTube event and encoder running while you switch OBS scenes or source states.
- Monitor audio and video throughout. YouTube’s guidance says to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Its streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate for upload bandwidth. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that describes archiving behavior, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation or a recommendation for an indefinite meditation stream. Verify current Live Control Room guidance before the event because YouTube’s controls and eligibility may change.

Preflight the transition and keep the stream stable
- Run through the full order of guided and quiet states before the event, including every playlist file boundary if using prerecorded material.
- Check whether silence means narration-muted ambience or no audio, and verify that the output matches that choice.
- Confirm that the microphone, media sources, and ambience are not captured twice through global audio devices and scene sources.
- Start the encoder ahead of the event, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and leave upload bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate.
- Keep an eye on the encoder, network, audio chain, and video quality. A scene switch changes the program sent by the encoder; it does not remove the need to monitor the ongoing stream.
Troubleshoot common switching problems
Narration is still audible in the quiet scene
Check whether the narration source exists in the Silence scene or remains active in the same scene. If you are using one scene, confirm that you muted or hid the narration source—not a different audio source. Check for a second capture of the same input.
The ambience disappears with the voice
Keep ambience on its own source. In the quiet state, mute narration alone rather than muting the entire scene or master output.

You hear echo or doubled audio
Look for the same device captured both globally and as a scene source, then disable the duplicate capture. OBS cautions that capturing a device twice can create echo.
A playlist stops or changes unexpectedly
Check VLC installation, playlist order, loop or shuffle settings, file-end behavior, and source visibility. Test the complete sequence before using it in a live event.

The YouTube event ends when you switch content
Scene changes should occur in OBS while the encoder and YouTube event remain active. Confirm that you are changing the OBS scene or source state rather than stopping the encoder or ending the event in YouTube Studio.
YouTube does not show a preview or the event will not start
Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the key has not been replaced or copied incorrectly, and review the current Live Control Room status and account eligibility. YouTube recommends starting the encoder before the event and checking the preview.

Use narration, music, and ambient recordings that you have the right to stream. A live format does not make copyrighted audio safe to use, and permission or licensing should cover the way you plan to broadcast it. YouTube’s official material cited here explains encoder setup and monitoring; it does not establish meditation-specific rules or therapeutic effects. Review YouTube’s current copyright and channel policies before choosing material, particularly if the stream repeats prerecorded content.
