Start with the response headers: Thumbalizr documents X-Thumbalizr-Status as QUEUED, OK, or FAILED, and X-Thumbalizr-Error as the failure reason. Those values help distinguish a capture still processing, a reported failure, and a technically successful screenshot that shows Cloudflare challenge content instead of the page. A Cloudflare challenge is one possible cause, but the screenshot alone does not prove why it appeared.
1. Read Thumbalizr’s response headers first
Use the response from the Thumbalizr request that produced the problematic capture. Its API documentation describes these status values:
QUEUED: processing is still pending. Wait for the capture to complete, then inspect the final result.OK: the capture completed. If the image shows a Cloudflare challenge, denial page, or other unexpected page, the capture worked but captured that response.FAILED: the capture failed. ReadX-Thumbalizr-Error; Thumbalizr describes it as the reason the screenshot failed.
Keep the complete header values and error text. They are more useful for diagnosis or a support request than a description such as “the screenshot is broken.”
2. Check the target URL and request settings
Verify URL encoding
Thumbalizr specifically calls out correct parameter encoding, especially for url. Check that the full target URL—including its query string and any special characters—is being passed as a single correctly encoded parameter. A malformed URL can fail independently of Cloudflare.

Check settings available to your account
Thumbalizr documents browser width and height, screenshot size, delay, and browser country as configurable options. Availability can vary by account tier, so confirm that the settings in the request are enabled for your account rather than assuming all options are available. A delay may help when a page needs time to render; it will not, by itself, resolve a challenge imposed by the destination site.
See Thumbalizr’s features and account options for the options it lists. If you change one setting, record the original request and compare results so you can identify which change mattered.

3. Determine whether Cloudflare is returning different content
Open the same URL in an ordinary browser and note what appears. If that visit shows a Cloudflare challenge, access denial, or region-dependent content, the automated capture may be receiving a different response from your normal visit. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of Thumbalizr’s request identity or of the cause of a particular failure.
Location can matter when a site serves different responses by region. Thumbalizr documents a browser-country option, with choices depending on account tier. If you use it, compare only locations available to your account and note which location produced each result.

Do not treat changing a user-agent as a reliable bot-protection bypass. Cloudflare’s Browser Run screenshot documentation says its userAgent parameter does not bypass bot protection. That describes Cloudflare Browser Run; it does not establish that Thumbalizr uses the same request identity, provides the same setting, or can be fixed by changing it.
4. If you administer the protected site
Inspect the site’s Cloudflare security events around the time of the capture. Look for the request and the specific rule or action that challenged or blocked it. Use the observed event to decide whether a rule change is appropriate; do not weaken protection based only on a screenshot that looks like a challenge.

Cloudflare’s published allowlisting instructions in the relevant documentation are for its own Browser Run. They are not a Thumbalizr allowlisting recipe. Do not copy a Browser Run identifier or rule and assume it applies to Thumbalizr. Base any change on your zone’s observed event details and, if needed, ask Thumbalizr support what can safely be allowed.
5. If you do not control the protected site
You generally cannot change the destination’s Cloudflare rules. Save the target URL, capture timestamp, X-Thumbalizr-Status, X-Thumbalizr-Error if present, and the resulting screenshot. You can share those details with the site owner or Thumbalizr support; avoid repeatedly changing request settings without evidence of what is failing.

6. Treat the April 2026 backend change as context, not a diagnosis
On April 8, 2026, Thumbalizr announced a phased transition of its screenshot backend from Browshot infrastructure to ScreenshotCenter, beginning with newly created accounts and then moving existing accounts in batches. The announcement said thumbnails, settings, and API usage would continue to work; it did not attribute Cloudflare capture failures to the transition.
