Use YouTube Live with an encoder to broadcast a steady camera view of your pages and close, clear paper sounds. Verify live-stream access before the session, connect the encoder with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, test the picture and audio, then start the event. If you want a replay, keep each session under 12 hours: YouTube says shorter streams can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.

What you need for a page-turning ASMR livestream

An encoder workflow is suited to a fixed camera view and a separate audio input. YouTube says encoders can work with external audio and video hardware. A dedicated microphone is optional; YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not necessary to get started.

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
  • A camera or other video source that can show the pages clearly.
  • An audio input for the page sounds. A microphone is a practical option, but no specific model or specification is required by YouTube.
  • An encoder compatible with your video and audio sources.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your total stream bitrate and other network use.

For the image, frame the page so the turning action is easy to follow and keep the camera stable. For sound, position the microphone close enough to pick up the paper while avoiding handling noise or clipping. These are production choices, not YouTube requirements; test them in the actual room and listen back before going live.

Check YouTube Live eligibility before the planned session

YouTube’s general guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16, the channel must be verified, and it must have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it well ahead of your session. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Set up the stream with an encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio: select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or schedule it. Scheduling gives you a watch page you can share in advance.
  2. Choose the encoder workflow: select the option for streaming with an encoder in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the setup and supports workflows using external audio and video hardware: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key: in Live Control Room, copy them into the encoder’s server and key fields. Treat the key as a password: it lets the encoder send a feed to your channel, so do not share it publicly.
  4. Prepare the shot and sound: make sure the page is visible, the camera is stable, and the microphone captures the paper without clipping. Reduce avoidable room noise and do a short test rather than assuming the live mix will sound right.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview: confirm that YouTube receives both video and audio. Check that the stream is accessible and that neither the paper nor voice, if any, is too quiet or distorted.
  6. Start the event: if you scheduled the stream and chose manual go-live, start it from Live Control Room after the encoder feed appears. When finished, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder.
  7. Record locally: save a local copy and check that the file is actually being written and growing. YouTube recommends a local archive backup.

Keep a long-running concept replayable

“Continuous” can describe the style of the channel, but it does not mean YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted archive indefinitely. YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For reliable replay access, end and restart the broadcast in sessions shorter than 12 hours, and retain your local recording as a backup. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.

For the connection, YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Leave capacity for other devices and network activity, and monitor the encoder for interruptions. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Protect the material you broadcast

You are responsible for having the rights needed for everything in the livestream, including applicable music rights. A book, music, or other material does not become free to broadcast merely because the stream is an ASMR performance or appears live. Check that you have permission for the broadcast and any archived replay; YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions set out this responsibility.

Encoder streaming versus HLS

For a straightforward page-turning broadcast, use the encoder workflow above if it supports your setup. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP’s continuous-stream approach. HLS is an optional ingestion method, not a prerequisite for this use case. See YouTube’s HLS setup information.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • “Go Live” is unavailable: check channel verification and restrictions, enable live streaming in advance, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  • YouTube preview is blank: verify the encoder is running, the selected video source is correct, and the stream URL and key were copied into the right fields.
  • No page sound or distorted audio: check the selected audio input and its connection, move the microphone to a useful distance, and adjust levels to avoid clipping. Test again while turning pages at the pace you plan to use.
  • Feed drops or stutters: check encoder and network status, reduce competing network use, and preserve the recommended upload headroom above the total bitrate.
  • The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions and verify the local recording is being saved.
  • Content is blocked or challenged: review rights for every element in the feed, including music and the material shown or read aloud. Remove or replace anything you are not cleared to broadcast.
