If YouTube Live rejects your FFmpeg podcast stream, the most likely fix is to send a video track alongside the podcast audio. Add a static cover image, title card, or generated visualizer, map both video and audio into the output, then check that Live Control Room shows a preview before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance documents video formats and a preview workflow, though it does not explicitly say every audio-only feed is rejected.

Why an audio-only FFmpeg stream can fail

YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies video formats, frame rates, and resolutions as well as audio settings, and its live workflow asks you to wait for a preview in Live Control Room. The Live Streaming API describes the submitted resource as a video feed. Together, these make a missing video track the best-supported first diagnosis when a podcast audio feed is rejected—not a guarantee that every audio-only feed will always fail.

You do not need camera footage for an audio-first show. FFmpeg can generate video frames from a software source, so a cover image, episode title card, or simple visualizer can accompany the audio.

Choose a visual to accompany the podcast

Visual Setup effort Useful when
Static cover image Lowest; provide an image as the video source You want a simple visual identity with minimal configuration.
Title card Low; use a prepared image with show or episode details Listeners should be able to identify the show or episode.
Waveform or visualizer Higher; requires FFmpeg filtering or another generated visual source You want motion that responds to or accompanies the audio.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what you will use in the stream. That is a testing recommendation, not a requirement to build an elaborate visualizer.

Fix the FFmpeg output: include and map video and audio

  1. Check the output streams. Review your command’s input and mapping. If it maps only the podcast audio, add a visual video input or generated video source and map one video stream as well as the podcast audio.
  2. Use a supported video and audio format. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio over RTMP/RTMPS. Use a codec your installed FFmpeg build supports.
  3. Set the output dimensions and frame rate. Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate for your visual and use YouTube’s published video bitrate range for those dimensions. YouTube lists support up to 60 fps; do not copy a video bitrate without matching it to resolution and frame rate.
  4. Apply the encoder timing and audio recommendations. YouTube recommends CBR encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. For stereo audio, its advanced recommendations specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  5. Send the output to the right live event. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the correct stream in Live Control Room, and configure FFmpeg to publish both mapped streams to that destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS.

The command’s exact input paths, filter graph, resolution, frame rate, and output URL depend on your files and FFmpeg build. The important structural change is to provide a video source and explicitly map it alongside the existing podcast audio; a command with audio alone does not address the likely missing-track problem.

Verify the preview and connection in Live Control Room

  1. Start FFmpeg and open the matching stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Wait for the preview to appear. If there is no preview, confirm that FFmpeg is publishing a video stream, not just audio, and that the stream key and URL belong to that event.
  3. Review the stream-health messages before going live. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the intended stream.
  4. If RTMPS will not connect, verify that the server URL uses the rtmps scheme, check the server address, and confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube says to try port 443 if needed.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not show a preview The outgoing feed may have no video stream, or it may be sent to a different event. Check FFmpeg’s input and output mapping for video and audio; verify the Live Control Room stream URL and key.
The podcast audio is missing The wrong audio stream may be mapped, or the output audio settings may not match the intended feed. Confirm that the podcast audio input is mapped to the output, then check the selected AAC or MP3 encoding and the stereo recommendations.
The RTMPS connection fails The address may use the wrong scheme or server, or the encoder may not support RTMPS. Use the RTMPS URL and server address shown for the stream, confirm encoder support, and try port 443 if needed.
The video appears, but the stream reports health problems Video settings may not align with the chosen resolution and frame rate, or the stream may not be configured as recommended. Check the relevant YouTube bitrate range, use CBR, and keep the keyframe interval at two seconds and no more than four seconds.
