In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect. This can retry a stream output after a connection drops. It is not a documented guarantee that OBS will restart streaming after an encoder error has stopped the output. For a meditation stream, check the destination’s live status after recovery rather than assuming viewers have uninterrupted playback.
Set up OBS automatic reconnect
- Open OBS Studio and select Settings.
- Choose Advanced.
- Turn on Automatically Reconnect.
- Review Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. Choose values that make sense for how quickly your connection or streaming destination might recover; there is no universal setting for every setup.
- Select Apply or OK to save the settings.
OBS describes reconnect as an output retry feature. Its output reference says retry timing doubles on each retry to avoid overloading services; a retry count of zero disables reconnecting. These controls can help with an interrupted connection, but they do not establish that an encoder failure itself will restart automatically. OBS output reference
Know whether the encoder or connection failed
Connection interruption or dropped frames
Dropped frames and intermittent disconnections usually indicate a network problem between the computer and the remote ingest server, according to OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide. In that case, automatic reconnect may retry the output while you investigate the connection path.
Encoder error
If OBS reports “An encoder error occurred while streaming.”, treat it separately from a network interruption. The reviewed OBS documentation describes output reconnect settings and reports encoder errors separately; it does not provide a one-click procedure that guarantees the stream will restart after an encoder stops. Capture the exact error and OBS log, then diagnose the encoder issue rather than relying on the reconnect checkbox.

Source failure or a destination that is offline
A camera, media source, or other input stopping is a different problem from the output reconnecting. Likewise, OBS appearing active locally does not prove that the destination is receiving a live stream. Community reports describe individual cases involving a source that did not resume and a destination that appeared offline; these are anecdotes, not evidence of how every setup behaves. Check the platform’s live status directly.
Check the stream after an attempted recovery
- Note whether OBS showed dropped frames, a disconnection, or the specific encoder-error message.
- For connection symptoms, follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance and check the connection to the selected ingest server.
- For an encoder error, retain the message and log for diagnosis; do not assume retries will restart a failed encoder.
- Open the destination’s live page or control room and confirm it reports the stream as live.
Reconnect settings do not establish what viewers will see during the interruption. Do not treat a retry attempt as proof of uninterrupted meditation audio or video.
