If images or embedded videos are missing, first check whether the problem affects one item or many, then compare the embed with the provider’s own page and test a private window or trusted alternate network. Those checks help distinguish a browser or network problem from a login requirement or a restriction set by the site or media owner. Some failures can only be fixed by the person who controls the content.
Start by finding out how widespread the problem is
- Reload the page once.
- Check another image or video on the same page, then check an unrelated site if possible.
- For a video, open it on the provider’s own website if the page offers a link to it.
- Note whether the failure changes in a private window, another browser, or on a trusted alternate connection such as mobile data.
Use the pattern to guide the next step. A single broken embed is more likely to involve that asset’s sharing, login, or embedding rules. Several unrelated failures point more toward browser settings, an extension, or a network restriction. These are diagnostic clues, not conclusive tests: more than one cause can produce the same blank image or player.
If one particular video or image fails
Check access and sharing
If the player reports a privacy, permission, or login problem, open the media on its provider’s site and sign in to the account that should have access. If it still will not open, ask the owner to confirm that the item is shared with you and that embedding is allowed. Some restricted videos cannot establish that you are signed in when shown inside another site. Loom documents this kind of issue for restricted videos in Firefox when its privacy protections prevent the embedded player from detecting account login.
Consider the owner’s delivery rules
An asset working on its original site but not on a different site may be blocked intentionally. For example, hotlink protection can check the HTTP Referer—the address identifying the page making a request—and deny images requested from other sites. Media may also use signed URLs that expire. These are settings controlled by the publisher or media owner, not by a visitor’s browser. Contact the site or asset owner and include the page address, the asset that fails, and whether it works on the provider’s own page.

If many images or videos fail in one browser
Check JavaScript and extensions
Some media features require JavaScript. Also consider whether an extension that blocks scripts, ads, trackers, or page content is interfering. In Chrome, try an Incognito window. If the media works there, disable extensions in the regular window and re-enable them one at a time until you find the one associated with the failure. Incognito uses different privacy behavior in some browsers, so success there is a clue, not proof that an extension is responsible.
Refresh relevant browser data
If testing extensions does not help, Chrome Help recommends clearing cached images and files and cookies. Use your browser’s current controls and select only the data types you need: clearing cookies can sign you out or reset site-specific state. Browser menus vary across versions and operating systems, so use the settings search for terms such as “cache” or “cookies” if the menu path differs from instructions you have seen.

Check privacy protections without disabling them everywhere
Embedded media can depend on cross-site cookies or other state shared between a site and a third-party provider. Browser privacy protections and extensions may block some of that activity, and the exact behavior varies by browser and service. If a provider identifies a cookie or tracking setting as relevant, check its instructions and the setting for that specific site or provider. Avoid turning off privacy protections globally as a routine fix; narrow, temporary testing is safer and easier to reverse.
Test whether the network is blocking the media
- Try the page over a trusted alternate connection, such as your phone’s mobile data, rather than an unfamiliar public network.
- If the media loads on the alternate connection but not on a work or school network, a firewall or network policy may be blocking the stream.
- Ask the organization’s network administrator to check whether the media provider or streaming traffic is restricted.
A connection change that makes the video work does not mean the device needs new hardware. It suggests that the original network’s rules or path may be involved. Vimeo lists managed-network firewalls among possible causes of playback trouble.

When to contact the site or media owner
Escalate the issue when a single asset fails while unrelated media works, when the provider’s page works but the embed does not, or when the player identifies a sharing or embedding restriction. The owner may need to change access, allow embedding, or adjust delivery rules such as hotlink protection or URL expiry. A visitor cannot override those controls through browser settings.
When reporting the problem, include the page where the embed appears, the provider page if available, the exact error text, and which checks changed the result. Do not send passwords or private account details.

Why is an embedded video blank even though the page loads?
The player may be blocked by a privacy setting, require an account, or be unable to reach its media service. Compare the embed with the provider’s own page and test another browser or connection to narrow it down.
Can I fix an image blocked by hotlink protection?
Not as a visitor. The site or image owner controls whether other sites may request the image; contact them if the embed is expected to work.
