Yes—you can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a mini PC. The PC runs streaming software that sends video and audio to YouTube using your stream key. Whether it can do so reliably depends on the exact encoding workload, sustained performance, local upload capacity, power and internet reliability, and how you detect and recover from failures. There is no universal minimum mini PC specification or guaranteed cost advantage over cloud hosting.
How a mini PC replaces a cloud server
With a local setup, the mini PC is both the encoder host and the origin of the internet connection used to reach YouTube. A software or hardware encoder sends the live feed to YouTube’s ingest server. With cloud hosting, those responsibilities move to a remote server and its network connection; the video still has to reach YouTube.
This is a practical fit for a prerecorded loop, a camera, a screen capture or a composed scene, provided the chosen machine can handle the source and output continuously. Decide whether the encoder must decode and re-encode video, add overlays or combine inputs, or can send an already encoded source. Each workload can demand different resources, so test the exact mini PC and configuration you intend to use.
Check these requirements before relying on the stream
Channel eligibility and activation
Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel before setting up the computer. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enablement until launch day. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Encoding capability
Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec and audio format first. Then verify that the specific mini PC can sustain that output, particularly if it must transcode, composite scenes or process multiple inputs. YouTube’s ingest recommendations describe stream settings, not mini PC performance. They do not establish a minimum CPU, memory or model requirement.
Upload capacity and resilience
Your available upload speed must exceed the total bitrate being sent. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and says to account for primary and backup streams where applicable. Shared connections, congestion and outages can reduce usable upload or interrupt the broadcast. A wired connection is a sensible option when available, but Wi-Fi is not categorically ruled out. YouTube’s streaming tips explain network testing and monitoring.
Local power and maintenance
A mini PC depends on electricity, internet service and a working host at your location. A UPS may bridge a brief power interruption, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or a problem at YouTube’s ingest server. You will also need to maintain the machine, storage, encoder settings, updates, logs and a way to notice failures.

Choose YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. It supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. The following are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates, not measured mini PC capabilities or universal minimums. Select the row for your codec, resolution and frame rate.

YouTube also specifies progressive scan, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends 128 Kbps audio for stereo. For HDR, it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm that your mini PC and encoder support the combination you select.
YouTube Help states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Google for Developers explains that “RTMPS is a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.

Set up the mini PC and YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. Confirm channel eligibility and activation in YouTube, allowing up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- Define the source and output. Decide whether you are looping prerecorded video, capturing a camera or screen, or combining sources. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and codec. Determine whether the encoder must transcode or can send a compatible encoded stream.
- Configure your encoder and YouTube event. Install and configure an encoder, then create or select the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address; treat it as a credential. Do not expose it in screenshots, public scripts or logs. See YouTube stream settings.
- Set bitrate and connection headroom. Use the relevant YouTube recommendation above, then confirm your available upload exceeds the total outgoing bitrate with headroom. Include a backup stream in the calculation if you send one.
- Test the complete path. Start a test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Check video, audio and playback, and confirm any local recording file is growing. Test using the same source, output settings and network you expect to use continuously.
- Test recovery before unattended operation. Simulate a network interruption and a host restart. Decide how you will detect a stopped encoder, failed source, lost connection or reboot, and how you will alert someone or recover service. The sources do not prescribe a particular watchdog or restart configuration.
- Choose an archive plan. If preserving the video matters, arrange local recording and verify the file. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Consider ending and restarting before 12 hours if you need a YouTube archive; very long streams may also have limited DVR rewind. Check YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
Keep the stream monitored and recoverable
A 24/7 broadcast is not set-and-forget simply because the encoder starts successfully. Watch stream health and playback, verify the source is still producing content, and check local recordings if you rely on them. Make sure someone can respond to alerts or inspect the system. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; it does not establish a specific mini PC restart strategy.
OBS notes that dropped frames or intermittent disconnects indicate a network problem between the computer and the ingest server. Reducing bitrate is one troubleshooting option. See OBS connection troubleshooting.

| Factor | Mini PC at your location | Cloud server |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Test whether your exact machine sustains the source, codec, resolution and frame rate. | Evaluate the server’s ability to handle the same workload; no universal capacity is established here. |
| Network path | Depends on local upstream capacity, congestion and ISP availability. | Depends on the provider’s network and the server’s available throughput. |
| Power and recovery | Local electricity and connectivity can fail; a UPS or monitoring can mitigate some issues, not eliminate them. | Depends on the provider and your ability to manage the remote service. |
| Cost over time | Account for hardware, electricity, internet service, backup equipment and operator time. | Account for recurring server and bandwidth charges. |
| Control and upkeep | Direct access to the machine and source files, with local responsibility for updates, storage, logs and recovery. | Remote operation, with provider and service details to evaluate for the chosen hosting option. |
There is no sourced universal cost winner. Compare current quotes and your expected run duration rather than assuming that buying a mini PC or renting a cloud server is always cheaper.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or intermittent disconnects | Connection between the encoder and YouTube ingest | Check available upload and network stability. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, reduce it and test again, following OBS’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| Preview or stream health shows a problem | Encoder output, ingest settings or network path | Compare codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings with YouTube’s current recommendations; test playback and inspect Live Control Room health messages. |
| The stream stops after a local power or internet interruption | Host or ISP availability and recovery setup | Check that the mini PC rebooted, the source and encoder resumed, and the connection returned. Add monitoring and a recovery procedure appropriate to your setup; a UPS only addresses some brief power interruptions. |
| No YouTube archive appears | Broadcast duration and local recording | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Check the local recording and consider shorter broadcast sessions if an archive is required. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a mini PC stream from a camera as well as loop prerecorded video?
Yes, if the camera feed can be captured by the encoder and the mini PC sustains the chosen encoding workload. The setup described here supports either kind of source; StreamNeo, by contrast, plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a stream longer than 12 hours always fail to archive?
No. YouTube says it may not be captured at all, so treat archiving as uncertain and keep a verified local recording if retention matters.
