Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo run a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event from a headless Ubuntu server, use an encoder on the server to send the video to a stream you create in YouTube Studio. Copy that event’s stream URL and private stream key into the encoder, start the feed, then verify it in YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube still manages the event; the server does not create or publish a live event by itself.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that can live stream. Eligibility can depend on the account; check YouTube’s current requirements in YouTube Studio.
- A prerecorded video file accessible to the Ubuntu server.
- An encoder that can read the file and send a live feed to YouTube. The encoder must support the ingest protocol and settings you choose.
- A stable server upload connection with enough capacity for the stream bitrate.
- Remote access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room so you can check the incoming feed and manage the event without a desktop on the server.
YouTube’s official encoder workflow explains how to create or schedule an event, connect an encoder, start and end a stream, and check its archive: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. The steps below describe the setup at that level. YouTube’s cited guidance does not provide a current Ubuntu package installation procedure or a tested FFmpeg command, so this guide does not give copy-and-paste installation commands or encoder flags.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy the stream URL and stream key for that event. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports RTMPS; do not assume a displayed default RTMP URL is encrypted.
- Keep the key private. It is a credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or example command. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest and explains the URL and key in its live encoder settings guidance and stream settings documentation.
Configure the encoder on Ubuntu
Install and configure an encoder using its current documentation for your Ubuntu release. It must open the prerecorded file, encode or pass through its audio and video as appropriate, and transmit to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Confirm that it supports RTMPS if you selected the secure endpoint. Keep the key in a protected configuration mechanism suitable for your deployment rather than embedding it in material others can access.

Check the encoder’s documentation for how to replay a file continuously if you need a loop: YouTube’s cited pages do not specify an Ubuntu or FFmpeg looping command, flags, or unattended service setup. Do not assume that a file will repeat automatically when playback reaches its end.
Choose encoder settings and upload capacity
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, a maximum frame rate of 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. The table below uses YouTube’s published guidance; the page does not show a publication date.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS | Use the endpoint shown for the event and confirm encoder support for RTMPS. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 | Choose a codec supported by the encoder and compatible with the quality and bitrate you intend to send. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Confirm the encoder is sending an audio track if the video is meant to include sound. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Match the output to the source and encoder capabilities. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | Set the encoder to constant bitrate where available, then check the connection can sustain it. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds | Set the interval in the encoder and verify its units and interpretation in that encoder’s documentation. |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a measured server requirement. Allow sufficient upload capacity for the selected bitrate. |
For other resolutions and codecs, consult YouTube’s bitrate and resolution table rather than applying the 1080p H.264 figures to every configuration. The server’s actual capacity, encoder load, source format, and chosen output settings affect whether a given setup works reliably; the cited YouTube guidance does not establish a universal Ubuntu server specification.
Start the feed and verify it remotely
- Start the encoder on Ubuntu and confirm it is reading the intended file and sending to the correct event URL.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and wait for the incoming video preview. Check that picture and sound are present and that the feed is not reporting an ingest error.
- For a scheduled event using the manual workflow, click Go live after the preview appears. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop controls in stream settings; use them only after confirming how they affect your event workflow.
- Check the event’s channel or watch page from a separate device or browser to verify viewers can access it. Monitor video and audio during the stream, not only on the server.
YouTube recommends testing before an event, checking the preview, confirming audience access, and monitoring stream quality in its live streaming tips. A headless server has no local desktop preview; the Live Control Room provides the remote check described in YouTube’s encoder workflow.

End the stream and check the archive
End the event through the encoder and YouTube controls according to whether you enabled auto-stop. Confirm the event has ended in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; for longer runs, check the event dashboard rather than assuming an archive will be available. The 12-hour figure is YouTube’s stated rule, not a guarantee about every stream’s archive state.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No incoming preview | Confirm the encoder is running, the event URL and key belong to the same stream, and the key has not been reset. Verify the ingest protocol matches what the encoder supports. |
| Preview appears, but the scheduled event is not public | In the manual scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and click Go live. Check the event status in Live Control Room. |
| Feed drops or becomes unstable | Check whether the server’s upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate and whether the encoder is still sending. Review its logs and YouTube’s stream status; adjust settings based on the encoder’s and YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Video works but there is no sound | Check that the source contains audio, that the encoder selects the intended audio track, and that it uses an audio codec YouTube lists, such as AAC or MP3. |
| Stream stops at the end of the file | Check the encoder’s documented file-repeat or playlist behavior. YouTube’s cited guidance does not define how an Ubuntu encoder loops a prerecorded file. |
| Unexpected start or stop behavior | Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and whether the workflow expects you to start or end the event manually. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without maintaining an Ubuntu server and encoder, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, and it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
