YouTube Live Redirect can send viewers from a source livestream to a Premiere or another channel’s livestream when the source ends. To set it up, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live, edit the source stream, choose Customization > Redirect > Add, select an eligible destination, and save. Your sending channel must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. YouTube’s official instructions do not specifically guarantee that the redirect controls are available for every 24/7 prerecorded encoder setup, so confirm the option appears for your stream before relying on it.
What Live Redirect does—and when it runs
Live Redirect is an end-of-stream handoff, not a way to switch viewers to another stream while the source is still running. You configure a destination for the source livestream; when that stream ends, YouTube’s intended behavior is to move viewers to the chosen Premiere or live stream. YouTube advises telling viewers that the destination may take a few seconds to load. Viewers who have autoplay disabled may need to click Play.
This can be useful when a 24/7 prerecorded stream is ending and you want to direct its audience to a scheduled Premiere or another live event. The official documentation reviewed describes encoder streaming and Live Redirect, but does not explicitly confirm compatibility across every prerecorded 24/7 stream or encoder configuration. Treat the presence of the redirect setting in your own Studio account as the practical check.
Check eligibility and choose a destination
Requirements for the sending channel
- Your channel must have more than 1,000 subscribers.
- Your channel must have no Community Guideline strikes.
YouTube Help lists these as eligibility requirements; they apply to the channel sending viewers.

Destination options and permissions
You can select a Premiere or another channel’s live stream. If you want to send viewers to someone else’s livestream, that creator must permit redirects from your channel. YouTube Studio’s channel permission settings can allow subscribed channels, all channels, or selected channels. If a destination does not appear, check that permission and confirm the event is active or upcoming.
Set up Live Redirect in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Select the Live tab.
- Find the source stream, point to it, and select Edit.
- Open Customization.
- In the Redirect section, select Add.
- Choose a Premiere or search for an eligible other channel’s livestream.
- Save the setting if YouTube prompts you to do so.
YouTube also documents configuring Live Redirect through Live Control Room. An older Google setup illustration from November 2020 uses earlier interface labels, so use the current Studio labels above if the screens differ.

Confirm support for your 24/7 prerecorded stream
YouTube lists Live Redirect as available for horizontal livestreams and unavailable for vertical live feeds. Its documentation does not specifically state that every 24/7 stream sourced from prerecorded video exposes the same redirect controls. Open the scheduled or source stream’s settings and check for Customization > Redirect before building your handoff plan around it. If the option is absent, the reviewed official materials do not establish a workaround that guarantees redirect support for that configuration.
The format distinction is about the stream feed, not a requirement to buy particular hardware: YouTube describes several general streaming methods, including encoders, but the redirect instructions do not say that a specific device is required.

End the source stream and prepare viewers for the handoff
- Tell viewers before ending the source that they may be sent to the selected Premiere or livestream and that the screen may reload briefly.
- End the source stream so YouTube can initiate the configured handoff.
- Remember that autoplay settings affect the viewer experience; people with autoplay disabled may have to select Play.
The destination is a Premiere or livestream, not an arbitrary video destination. Live Redirect is not documented as a way to keep the source stream running while moving the audience elsewhere.
