Valve’s current public Steam Link FAQ and inspected SteamVR beta notes do not document removal of a Vulkan requirement. That means the headline claim is unverified—not proof that no undocumented code change occurred. The latest inspected beta notes, for SteamVR 2.18.1 on 23 September 2026, describe streaming updates but do not mention a Vulkan change.
What Valve’s documentation does—and does not—confirm
Valve describes Steam Link as software for streaming games from a computer running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus, and PICO headsets. It is available free from the headset or phone store. Valve says business HTC headsets are not officially supported at this time. Valve’s Steam Link FAQ does not name Vulkan as a requirement, describe a Vulkan-related Steam Link failure, or provide a change history documenting its removal.
The inspected SteamVR beta announcements likewise do not identify such a change. The evidence supports a narrow conclusion: Valve’s current public documentation does not record the reported removal. It does not establish that an undocumented change could not have happened.
What the latest SteamVR beta notes say
SteamVR beta 2.18.1 — 23 September 2026
Valve’s latest inspected beta announcement lists tethered Quest support over USB when used with the Steam Link beta, fixes for video corruption, checkerboarding and streams getting stuck, improved automatic bitrate selection, and an option for a Meta headset to override the host frame rate when configured manually at the operating-system level. It does not list removal of a Vulkan requirement.

SteamVR beta 2.17.10 — 15 September 2026
Valve says Meta Quest users should opt into both the Steam Link app beta and the SteamVR beta to receive the most up-to-date features. Beta features may therefore require enrollment in both channels, rather than only SteamVR.

These are the requirements Valve publishes for Steam Link; they do not confirm the specific Vulkan claim.

Wireless Steam Link and tethered USB are different paths
Valve’s recent beta notes document USB streaming, but not as a fix for a Vulkan-related problem. The notes say tethered Quest support over USB must be used with the Steam Link beta. Earlier beta notes describe an initial USB streaming path that can work without Wi-Fi when users opt into the Steam Client Beta.
| Setup | Network dependency | Beta enrollment noted by Valve | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless Steam Link | Valve’s FAQ specifies a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 minimum. | For current Meta Quest feature previews, Valve says to use both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta. | Official wireless streaming path; no Vulkan removal or workaround is documented. |
| Tethered Quest USB | An earlier beta path can operate without Wi-Fi when used with the Steam Client Beta. | The 2.18.1 notes say USB support must be used with the Steam Link beta. | Officially listed streaming option; Valve provides no comparative latency, image-quality or stability measurements. |
Because Valve has not published comparative measurements in these notes, there is no basis here to rank wireless and USB by latency, image quality or stability.

What to do if Steam Link VR is failing
- Check the documented setup first. Confirm the PC, graphics card, headset model and headset software meet the Steam Link FAQ requirements. For wireless play, check for a 5 GHz network and Wi-Fi 5 or newer.
- Enroll in the relevant betas for beta features. For current Meta Quest previews, Valve advises opting into both the Steam Link app beta and SteamVR beta. For the documented tethered Quest USB support in SteamVR 2.18.1, use the Steam Link beta as well.
- Report persistent SteamVR beta issues. Valve directs users to the SteamVR Bug Report forum and recommends including a system report when possible.
Neither switching to USB nor joining a beta should be treated as a confirmed Vulkan workaround: Valve’s cited notes do not make that connection.
