This is useful for repeatable mobile-layout checks, but it does not prove how the site behaves on every physical handset. For an India-specific checkout, test only the payment methods the storefront actually offers and use an authorized sandbox.
Set up a repeatable mobile test
Start with a controlled staging storefront, a device profile relevant to your audience, and stable selectors or test IDs for the important page states. Puppeteer’s Page.emulate() applies device metrics and a user agent; its documentation recommends applying emulation before navigation because many sites do not expect a phone’s dimensions to change after the page loads. The example uses Puppeteer’s KnownDevices and PredefinedNetworkConditions exports. Confirm these exports and the selected device name against the Puppeteer version installed in your project; the cited API documentation identifies Page.emulate() as version 25.11.0 and viewport, network, and network-logging APIs as version 25.12.0.
Install and run the example
In a Node.js project, install Puppeteer, save the following as an ES module such as mobile-check.mjs, then run node mobile-check.mjs. Replace the staging URL and selector with values from your own site.

}The sample is a starting point, not a guarantee that every selector or device profile suits every storefront. The overflow check reports one common layout symptom; it does not judge whether text, controls, or shopping interactions are usable.
Choose the emulation settings deliberately
A small browser window is not by itself a complete mobile configuration. Puppeteer’s viewport settings include width and height in CSS pixels, device scale factor, touch support, mobile viewport behavior, and orientation. Its defaults include hasTouch: false and isMobile: false. A narrow viewport with those defaults may not exercise the same responsive behavior as mobile emulation.
- Device profile: Use
KnownDeviceswhen a maintained device definition matches the screen you intend to represent. A profile applies metrics and a user agent together. - Custom viewport: Define width and height in CSS pixels when testing a specific breakpoint or a device not represented by your selected profile. Set
deviceScaleFactor,hasTouch,isMobile, andisLandscapeaccording to the behavior you need to exercise. - Timing: Set the viewport before navigation. Puppeteer notes that changing viewport settings such as
isMobileorhasTouchcan reload a page in some cases. See Puppeteer Page.setViewport(). - Orientation: Include landscape when it matters to your supported experience; portrait results do not establish landscape behavior.
Test the shopping journey, not just the homepage
Run the same checks at representative states rather than treating a successful landing-page render as coverage of the whole store.
- Category or listing: Check product cards, images, filters, sorting, and pagination or infinite-scroll controls at the emulated viewport.
- Product detail: Inspect image galleries, price and availability, option selectors, quantity controls, and the add-to-cart action.
- Cart: Check that quantities, item removal, totals, and the next action remain visible and usable.
- Address and delivery: If present in the test environment, inspect the form, validation messages, and any delivery information the storefront displays.
- Payment and return: Exercise only the payment flow implemented by the site, using its approved test environment rather than live charges.
At each state, look for horizontal overflow, clipped or obscured content, unreadable product or price details, controls that are difficult to reach by touch, and sticky bars or dialogs that cover important actions. These are useful test assertions to add to your own suite, not claims that a particular site has those defects.

Repeat the run under constrained networks
Puppeteer provides predefined Slow 3G, Fast 3G, Slow 4G, and Fast 4G profiles through PredefinedNetworkConditions and Page.emulateNetworkConditions(). Re-run important states under an appropriate profile and observe whether loading indicators, images, and controls remain understandable while content arrives. The API documentation states that network-condition emulation does not affect WebSockets or WebRTC peer connections. See Puppeteer Page.emulateNetworkConditions() and PredefinedNetworkConditions.

Capture screenshots and diagnose failed requests
Use Page.screenshot() for a page capture and ElementHandle.screenshot() when a particular component needs closer inspection. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates waiting for networkidle2, but a commerce page may keep analytics, polling, or other requests open. For repeatable tests, wait for a meaningful page-ready condition such as a product-grid selector, as in the example, rather than assuming network idle always signals readiness. A screenshot documents a rendered state under one browser configuration. It does not establish consistent behavior across physical devices. Attach request and response listeners before navigation when you need to connect missing assets or failed requests to a captured state; Puppeteer emits these events on the page. See Puppeteer Page events.
Apply India-specific payment checks only when relevant
Indian storefronts do not all use the same payment methods or checkout interface. If your site implements Google Pay’s documented UPI web integration, include payment selection and the merchant return or status state in the test. Google’s India web guide describes merchant and transaction fields including a unique transaction reference, transaction URL, amount, and currency; the documented web method supports INR. GST breakdown and invoice details are described as optional fields. Check the provider’s current integration guidance before relying on those requirements because payment documentation can change. Google’s setup guide describes testing that integration with Google Pay installed and Chrome for Android 60 or later. That is specific to the documented integration, not a general recommendation to use an obsolete browser for layout QA. Use the current browser and device matrix supported by your site and payment provider. Do not treat a browser response alone as proof that an order settled; server-side payment verification is separate from visual layout testing. Avoid live charges and use a provider-approved sandbox or other expressly authorized test flow. See Google Pay India testing and deployment.

NPCI’s BHIM-UPI guidelines describe an App and Mobile Web flow with a prominent “Pay by any UPI app” option and say intent is currently available for Android. Apply that guidance only if your site implements that kind of UPI intent flow; it is not a universal checkout requirement. See NPCI BHIM-UPI guidelines.

The page looks desktop-sized despite a narrow window
A narrow viewport alone may leave mobile-specific viewport behavior and touch support disabled. Set the intended mobile and touch options or use a suitable KnownDevices profile, and apply it before navigation.

The page reloads or changes unexpectedly when settings change
Some viewport changes, including mobile or touch settings, can trigger a reload. Set the complete emulation configuration before opening the page, then navigate once.
The script waits indefinitely for network idle
Long-running analytics or polling can prevent a generic network-idle condition from being useful. Wait for a site-specific ready selector or state instead, and use an explicit timeout appropriate to the test environment.
The screenshot is missing products or images
The capture may have occurred before the storefront rendered its content, or the page may need scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded media. Wait for the relevant product or image selector and, for full-page evidence, confirm the page has finished loading the content you intend to inspect.
A request failed but the screenshot still exists
A screenshot records the rendered page even when an asset request fails. Inspect the recorded request URL and failure text alongside the tested state; a visible capture does not establish that every image or checkout resource loaded successfully.

Network throttling does not affect a real-time feature
Puppeteer’s documented network emulation does not apply to WebSockets or WebRTC peer connections. Test those paths with a method appropriate to the connection type rather than interpreting the throttled page run as coverage.
UPI behavior differs from the emulated browser run
Confirm that the site and provider support the tested browser, Android device, and payment flow. Use provider-authorized test credentials or sandbox procedures; do not infer settlement from the page’s return response.

Puppeteer gives you repeatable evidence for specified viewport metrics, user agent, network profile, journey state, and browser conditions. It is valuable for finding layout regressions and correlating them with requests, but a screenshot is not a substitute for checking the site on physical devices supported by your customers. Choose device sizes and browser coverage from the storefront’s supported-device analytics and risk; there is no universal device list established for Indian shoppers.

Does a Puppeteer mobile screenshot prove the site works on a real phone?
No. It records one emulated browser configuration and rendered state. Confirm important behavior on physical devices in the site’s supported matrix.
Should every Indian ecommerce checkout be tested for UPI intent?
No. Include UPI-specific steps only when the storefront actually implements the relevant UPI flow.
