1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: The Mac mini is the more conventional desktop choice; the Raspberry Pi 5 is a smaller, more hands-on option for someone comfortable setting up and troubleshooting a small computer. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish that either will reliably run your particular YouTube playlist stream unattended. Choose based on whether your software supports the device and workflow, whether you need real-time encoding, your existing hardware, and measured power use—not processor specifications alone.
What matters most for a 24/7 playlist stream
A computer’s processor is only one part of an always-on stream. Before buying hardware or relying on a setup, establish how the video will be played and sent to YouTube, whether that workflow is supported on the device, and how it behaves over an extended run.
- Playback and encoding: Determine whether your workflow sends a pre-encoded video stream or must encode video in real time. A listed video decoder does not demonstrate that a computer can encode your chosen format or run a particular streaming application.
- Software compatibility: Confirm that the operating system, streaming application, and any required encoder support your exact computer and intended workflow. Raspberry Pi OS and ARM software support are particularly important to verify for a Pi build.
- Continuity: Consider what happens after a power or network interruption, application crash, or YouTube disconnect. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish unattended recovery or continuous-stream reliability.
- Network and power: The computer cannot compensate for an unstable internet connection, insufficient upload capacity, or unreliable power. Check the complete setup, not only the computer’s ports or rated power supply.
- YouTube rules: Check current YouTube Help requirements for Live eligibility and the content you intend to stream. The sources available for this comparison do not establish current rules for continuous streaming, looping, or archived streams.
For a stream you depend on, verify these items and run a long-duration test with your actual playlist, software, and network before treating the setup as ready.
Mac mini vs. Raspberry Pi 5
The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not results from a comparable livestream test. Apple’s current technical-specifications page covers current Apple-silicon Mac mini configurations; Raspberry Pi Ltd’s product brief is dated April 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
| Decision factor | Mac mini | Raspberry Pi 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Compute and media features | Apple lists current Apple-silicon configurations and hardware media engines. The specifications do not establish performance for a particular OBS or FFmpeg streaming pipeline. | The April 2026 Raspberry Pi 5 brief lists a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor, RAM options from 1 GB to 16 GB, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. These specifications do not establish livestream encoding capacity. |
| Networking | Apple lists Ethernet; the current specifications show 2.5Gb Ethernet and configurable faster networking for relevant configurations. | Raspberry Pi lists Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. |
| Power figure available | Apple lists 155 W maximum continuous power. This is a maximum rating, not measured or typical consumption while streaming. | Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5. The supply rating is not the Pi’s measured stream-load draw. |
| Getting started | A conventional desktop computer with internal storage and built-in ports. Check the exact configuration and included accessories before purchase. | Plan for the board, a compatible power supply, boot media, and any case or cooling required by your setup. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance says to write an OS image to boot media before starting the computer. |
| Software and unattended operation | Support for your exact streaming application and workflow, and unattended recovery behavior, are not established by the cited specifications. | Current OBS support on Raspberry Pi OS/ARM, a compatible hardware-encoding path, and unattended recovery are not established by the cited specifications. |
When the Mac mini makes more sense
Consider the Mac mini if you want a conventional desktop platform and its acquisition cost is reasonable for your use. Apple lists hardware media engines and Ethernet among the current model’s features, but that does not prove that a specific application or encoding setup will perform as required. Verify compatibility and test your actual stream workflow before depending on it.
Do not use Apple’s 155 W maximum continuous-power rating as an estimate of the Mac mini’s 24/7 consumption. To estimate ongoing electricity cost, measure the complete system at the wall under the intended workload and apply your local electricity rate.

When the Raspberry Pi 5 makes more sense
Consider the Raspberry Pi 5 if you are comfortable preparing boot media, installing and configuring an operating system, and troubleshooting software compatibility. Its April 2026 product brief lists a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm processor, RAM configurations from 1 GB to 16 GB, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. These are listed hardware capabilities, not evidence that the Pi can encode your chosen stream or run it unattended.
Include the setup hardware
- Choose a Raspberry Pi 5 configuration and check that the software you intend to use supports it.
- Use a suitable USB-C power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W supply for Pi 5.
- Prepare boot media by writing an operating-system image to it, following the official Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
- Choose storage capacity based on whether playlist media will be stored locally, the size of those files, and your logging and operating-system needs. No single card capacity can be recommended without those details.
- Test the exact playback, encoding, and streaming workflow before leaving the device unattended.
Raspberry Pi Ltd’s April 2026 product brief states that Raspberry Pi 5 will remain in production until at least January 2036. That is a production statement, not a promise of software compatibility or streaming reliability.

Compare actual cost and power, not headline ratings
The available figures are not directly comparable: 155 W is Apple’s maximum continuous-power rating, while 27 W is Raspberry Pi’s recommended power-supply rating. Neither is a measurement of the complete system running the same playlist-streaming workload. The sources do not provide like-for-like purchase prices, stream-load wattage, or electricity costs.
For a fair comparison, price the exact Mac mini configuration or complete Pi setup available in your region, including the Pi’s required accessories. Then measure each complete system at the wall under the same intended workload. Multiply the measured kilowatts by the hours used and your local price per kilowatt-hour to estimate energy cost; keep the electricity rate and measurement period specific to your location and test.
