Yes, a Mac mini can run an encoder such as OBS to send prerecorded 4K video to YouTube Live—but that does not mean every Mac mini can do it reliably, unattended, around the clock. The result depends on the Mac’s processor, OBS encoder, video settings, upload connection, and ability to recover from interruptions. Test the exact setup before relying on it. YouTube also warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay.
What the Mac mini has to do
A prerecorded video sent through YouTube Live is still an encoder-based live broadcast. The Mac must read and loop or advance the video, encode it at the selected settings, and continuously send it to YouTube over the network. The Mac, OBS, and internet connection therefore need to remain available for the stream to continue.
OBS supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but its system requirements are not a promise of 4K performance. OBS cautions that the demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting its basic requirements does not guarantee a computer can stream or record at the selected settings. The cited documentation does not establish sustained 24-hour 4K performance for any specific Mac mini model.
Check your YouTube channel before configuring OBS
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Confirm that the channel is eligible before planning a scheduled start. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the setup requirements.

The video and audio must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. You also need the rights to broadcast the material: YouTube lists copyright matches and strikes among reasons live-streaming access may be restricted. A video being prerecorded or available online does not establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it.
Choose an encoder and 4K settings
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no farther apart than 4 seconds. RTMPS is the secure version of RTMP. Check which codec and settings your chosen OBS version actually exposes; not every codec option is available with every Mac and encoder.

YouTube’s recommended 4K ingest bitrates
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 | AV1 or HEVC/H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not measurements of what a particular Mac mini can encode or upload. They are operational guidance, not a guarantee of stable output. YouTube’s settings page also lists up to 60 fps. For an SDR stream, follow the page’s Rec. 709 guidance; do not assume the SDR RTMP setup also covers 4K HDR. YouTube specifies HEVC and HLS for its HDR live workflow. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Encoder choice by Mac architecture
- Apple Silicon: OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox hardware encoding for H.264 streaming on Apple Silicon Macs. Hardware encoding can move encoding work away from the CPU, but this documentation does not certify any Mac mini for a particular 4K frame rate or 24-hour run.
- Intel: OBS says Intel Macs cannot use its VideoToolbox path for streaming because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. OBS directs Intel users to x264, a CPU-based encoder. Confirm performance with the actual source and settings instead of assuming the Mac will sustain the load.
OBS’s macOS system-requirements article lists an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and macOS 11 or later as basic requirements; that baseline does not establish suitability for 4K. Review the current OBS system requirements and hardware encoding guidance alongside your installed version.

Set up and test the prerecorded stream
- Confirm channel readiness. Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Prepare the source and rights. Confirm the video and audio can legally be broadcast, and decide how the playlist or video should repeat. Check that the video’s resolution and frame rate match the output you intend to send.
- Configure OBS. Add the prerecorded video or playlist to the scene, configure the intended loop or sequence, and select an encoder and YouTube-compatible output settings. Set CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and the appropriate YouTube bitrate for the chosen 4K frame rate and codec. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Connect the YouTube stream key. Copy the stream key from the YouTube live control room into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording.
- Measure upload capacity at the Mac’s location. Test sustained outbound speed on the network the Mac will use. YouTube notes that upload capacity can be lower than download capacity and that shared connections reduce the bandwidth available to one streamer.
- Run a full rehearsal. Preview before starting, monitor YouTube stream health, check audio and video, and verify the stream is accessible. For an always-on prerecorded stream, also check that the video loops or advances as intended and test what happens after a network interruption or OBS restart. Testing recovery is prudent; it does not guarantee OBS will reconnect automatically.
- Plan for local operation. Keep the Mac awake, OBS running, and the network connected for the broadcast duration. Arrange a way to notice failures if nobody will be watching the machine.
Allow upload headroom and plan for interruptions
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including any backup stream. For example, a single 50 Mbps stream implies at least 60 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that recommendation. This is a bandwidth planning target, not an availability guarantee; congestion or brief disruptions can still interrupt a broadcast. Use a reliable network and check the actual outbound connection where the Mac will run. See YouTube’s tips for live streaming.
Do not rely on one 24-hour broadcast as your only archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, including streams at 1440p and 2160p/4K. For a stream that exceeds 12 hours, YouTube warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is an archive caveat, not proof that an encoder cannot transmit longer. If a complete replay matters, make a separate recording plan or use shorter sessions, and keep a local recording where practical. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

How the Mac mini compares with other ways to keep YouTube live
The Mac mini is one way to run the encoder locally. YouTube’s encoder directory also identifies Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams, and AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder with PlayToStream for scheduling prerecorded media. The directory entry does not establish that AJA HELO Plus supports the 4K prerecorded workflow described here.
StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it keeps uploaded video streaming to YouTube from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
