Usually, FFmpeg is doing what the loop setting asks: -stream_loop restarts the entire input at its opening frame after each pass. But if the first frame repeats within the clip, check for the video loop filter buffering only one frame—especially size=1:start=0. A loop can also be technically correct yet look abrupt if its last image does not transition smoothly to its first.

First, identify where the repetition happens

  • Only at the end of each complete pass: this is expected when looping the whole input with -stream_loop. Playback starts again from the opening frame.
  • Repeated within the clip, or frozen on the opening frame: inspect the filter graph for a frame-based loop filter, then check the input type and the full command.
  • Only an abrupt visual jump at the restart: compare the final and opening images. The footage may not have a seamless boundary, even if FFmpeg is looping it as configured.

Check whether you are looping the whole video or selected frames

Whole-input loop: -stream_loop

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. A value of 0 means no loop; -1 means infinite looping. Place the option before the -i for the input it should repeat:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i meditation.mp4 ...

This repeats the complete input, so returning to the first frame at the end of a pass is normal. If the opening frame is repeating before the pass finishes, this option alone does not explain that behavior; inspect the other options and filters.

Frame-based loop: the loop video filter

The video loop filter repeats buffered frames. Its size parameter sets the maximum number of frames in the buffer, and start selects the first frame to loop; both default to zero. The FFmpeg manual’s example loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 intentionally loops just one frame—the first frame—forever. The documentation describes the feature as “Loop video frames.”

If your filter chain includes loop=, inspect its loop count, size, and start. A one-frame buffer starting at frame zero can account for a persistent first-frame repeat. Change or remove the filter only after confirming which stream it affects and whether you want to repeat the whole clip or a section; the appropriate buffer size depends on that goal.

Check the kind of input FFmpeg is reading

Encoded video

For an MP4 or another encoded clip, check whether the command uses -stream_loop and whether a filter graph adds a separate frame loop. A whole-input restart and a selected-frame loop are different operations, so look at both.

Image sequence

Numbered images use FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer, which has its own input option named loop, disabled by default. Its documented default frame rate is 25 fps. Check whether the command is reading a single still, a numbered sequence, or an encoded video before changing loop settings.

Concat list

If the input is a concat list, the concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each listed file begins where the previous one ends. The files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate stored duration can cause artifacts, so check duration metadata and stream compatibility when the repeat or transition occurs around a concatenated segment.

Troubleshoot the command in order

  1. Locate the repeat. Note whether the first frame returns only after the full clip, appears repeatedly within it, or stays on screen. This distinguishes a normal pass boundary from a likely filter or input issue.
  2. Read the input options. Find -stream_loop and verify that it appears before the relevant -i. Remember that -1 loops indefinitely and 0 disables input looping.
  3. Search the filter graph. Inspect every loop= filter and its size, start, and loop-count parameters. In particular, size=1:start=0 targets the first frame alone.
  4. Confirm the input path. Determine whether FFmpeg reads an encoded video, image sequence, or concat list. Check the corresponding demuxer or timestamp handling rather than applying a setting for a different input type.
  5. Compare the boundary images. Look at the last and first decoded images. If the restart is the only problem and those images differ sharply, adjust the edit or loop point, or use footage whose ending transitions naturally into its beginning. This is an editorial fix, not evidence that FFmpeg is malfunctioning.
  6. Gather details if it remains unexplained. Share the complete command, FFmpeg version, input stream details, and exactly when the repeat happens. Without those details or the media itself, the specific cause cannot be determined.

Make the meditation loop look natural

A whole-input loop always returns from the last frame to the first. For meditation footage, a locked camera, still landscape, or slow movement may make that transition less noticeable; a deliberate crossfade may also help. Judge the actual final-to-first transition in the source rather than assuming the loop setting will make mismatched footage seamless.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the finished meditation video is meant to play continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; the stream plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
