For a free Windows setup, use OBS Studio with its VLC Video source to queue and stream multiple local video files to YouTube Live. Install VLC alongside OBS, add your clips to the VLC Video source in the order you want, and enable playlist looping if it should restart at the end. For one repeating video, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler: add the file and enable its Loop option.
Which free tool should you use?
OBS Studio handles the scene, encoding, and connection to YouTube. For a multi-file playlist, its VLC Video source provides the queue and playback controls; VLC must also be installed. A single-file loop can use OBS’s built-in Media Source instead, avoiding the VLC dependency.

These workflows are for playing uploaded or locally stored video files as the content of a YouTube Live broadcast—not for going live from a camera. Compatibility can vary with Windows builds, codecs, hardware, and file formats; the available documentation does not establish support for every configuration.
Set up an ordered playlist with OBS and VLC
- Install OBS Studio and VLC for Windows. Match their architecture: OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source.
- Create or select a scene in OBS. In the Sources panel, choose + and add VLC Video. If that source is unavailable, first confirm VLC is installed and its bitness matches OBS.
- Add the files in the intended order. Open the VLC Video source’s properties and add the local video files to its playlist. Review the queue order before you broadcast.
- Choose playlist behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final item. Shuffle is optional; leave it off when the order matters.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended and that the expected audio is present. Test transitions between clips, including the final item and the playlist restart if looping.
Loop one video without installing VLC
- In OBS, select or create a scene, then choose + in the Sources panel and add Media Source.
- Choose the local file in the source properties and enable Loop.
- Preview the source and verify its picture and sound before connecting it to YouTube.
Media Source’s Loop setting repeats an individual file. Use VLC Video instead when you need OBS to play a queue of multiple files.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check channel eligibility early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the minimum age to livestream is 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete this before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and find the current stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service, and enter the stream URL and key if the interface asks for them. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Follow the current OBS and YouTube setup screens if their labels change.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. If exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. YouTube explains stream keys in Manage live stream settings.
- Start the OBS output and check YouTube’s incoming preview. Confirm that the expected playlist video and audio appear in the Live Control Room. Go live using the controls for your chosen YouTube setup.
Choose video and bitrate settings
YouTube Help’s current encoder-settings page, accessed October 3, 2026 (publication date not displayed), recommends RTMP or RTMPS; supported video codecs listed include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS when available for an encrypted connection. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current recommendations.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that your PC or internet connection can sustain them. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the source material and the sustained upload capacity of your connection. If the broadcast drops frames or YouTube reports poor stream health, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again rather than assuming the recommended maximum will work on every connection.

Test the playlist before broadcasting
Test a representative section with both movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube recommends testing the actual audio and motion and monitoring stream health during the event. Check clip boundaries, the last item, and the restart behavior if looping; a playlist that appears correct in the editor can still have an unexpected transition or missing sound.
- Confirm YouTube’s incoming preview shows the correct scene and video.
- Listen for audio from more than one file and check that levels are audible.
- Verify the playlist order, shuffle choice, and loop behavior.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators after output begins and while live.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The playlist stops at the end: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. For a single file, enable Loop in Media Source instead.
- Clips play in the wrong order: Review the VLC Video playlist and disable shuffle when you need a fixed sequence.
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, then check that OBS uses the current stream URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the saved key in OBS.
- Stream health is poor or frames drop: Check YouTube’s health feedback and reduce bitrate or resolution if your upload connection cannot sustain the chosen output. Test the revised settings before the broadcast.
- Video appears but audio is absent or wrong: Check the source and scene audio in OBS, then test clips individually and across transitions before going live.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
A playlist being technically playable does not mean its contents are cleared for a live broadcast. Use videos and audio you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream, and check that the permission covers live use. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules also apply to the channel, and restrictions can prevent a broadcast. Review YouTube’s current guidance before scheduling a stream, especially if the channel or content has previously received a restriction.
