To keep a YouTube livestream playing overnight on a Windows PC, set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never (or to a time longer than the session). Set the screen-off timeout separately: the display can turn off while the computer stays awake. If you use a laptop with its lid closed, check the plugged-in lid-close action too. These settings reduce the chance that Windows interrupts playback; they cannot guarantee the stream, browser, or internet connection will remain trouble-free all night.
Which Windows setting matters most?
Windows treats turning off the screen and putting the computer to sleep as separate actions. A screen that goes dark does not necessarily mean the PC has slept. Sleep is the setting to change if you want the active session to remain awake for an overnight viewing session.
For a long session, connect the PC to AC power and set its plugged-in sleep timeout to Never, or choose a duration longer than the stream. Choose the screen timeout independently, according to whether you want the display to remain on. Running on battery all night is not a reliable substitute for plugging in: battery life varies by device and workload.
Set Windows 11 power and screen timeouts
- Plug the computer into AC power.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the Plugged in options, set the sleep timeout to Never or to a duration longer than your planned session.
- Choose the plugged-in screen-off timeout separately. Set it to your preference; it does not need to match the sleep timeout.
- If you want to close a laptop’s lid, check the lid-close behavior before starting playback, then run a supervised test with the lid in the position you intend to use.
Microsoft documents separate screen and sleep controls in Windows 11. Its listed plugged-in defaults vary by device: modern standby devices show five minutes for both screen-off and sleep, while the documented plugged-in sleep default for S3 devices is 15 minutes. These are defaults, not overnight recommendations; check your own settings rather than assuming which default applies.

If you plan to close a laptop lid
Many laptops sleep when the lid closes. The lid action is a separate control from the screen and sleep timeouts, and Windows provides separate choices for battery and plugged-in operation.
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- In the Plugged in column, choose an action that does not put the PC to sleep if playback must continue with the lid closed.
- Save the change if Windows presents that option, then test the setup before relying on it overnight.
Available behavior can depend on the computer and its manufacturer configuration. Confirm what your laptop actually does; do not assume that a lid setting overrides every device-specific power behavior.

Power mode is not the sleep timer
Windows power mode adjusts the balance between efficiency and performance; it does not replace the sleep timeout. Microsoft describes Balanced as balancing battery life and performance, and Best performance as maximizing performance. For overnight viewing, first configure the plugged-in sleep timeout. Changing power mode alone will not keep a PC from sleeping.
Power-mode choices can vary by Windows version and hardware, and may be unavailable with a custom power plan. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 instructions and availability should be treated as legacy guidance rather than current supported-platform advice.

Check YouTube playback and your connection
Preventing Windows from sleeping addresses only one possible interruption. Playback also depends on YouTube, the browser, the PC, and the network. YouTube recommends using a current supported browser and a good internet connection. Some live streams can need faster connectivity and more processing power than ordinary playback.
- Use an up-to-date supported browser. Close other tabs, browsers, and programs if the computer is struggling; YouTube says this can help while streaming video.
- If Wi-Fi is unreliable, try a wired internet connection. YouTube notes that hard-wiring may help, and network congestion can affect live programming. An Ethernet cable is an optional troubleshooting aid, not a requirement for changing Windows power settings.
- Do not treat a stated minimum connection speed as a guarantee of stable playback at every resolution. YouTube playback quality can adapt to connection speed, player size, source quality, and browser.
- Check whether YouTube’s Sleep Timer is set to pause the video during the planned viewing period. That timer is separate from Windows sleep settings.
Test before leaving playback unattended
After changing the settings, start the livestream and observe the setup for a while under the conditions you plan to use: plugged in, screen on or off as intended, and lid open or closed as intended. Confirm that the PC stays awake and playback continues. This practical check can reveal a setting or connection problem, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted overnight playback.

Troubleshoot an interruption
