Minimize or hide OBS if you want to clear your desktop; don’t quit it. If OBS is still running and the stream disappears, check OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room before changing settings—the cause may be a connection problem, an ended event, or an application crash.
Why closing OBS takes a YouTube stream offline
OBS encodes and sends the video feed to YouTube. When you quit OBS, its encoder stops sending content, so YouTube can no longer receive that feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions put it plainly: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Minimizing OBS is different from quitting it. If you want to keep streaming while using other apps, leave OBS open and minimize or hide its window. Avoid Quit or Command-Q while OBS is the active encoder.
First, identify what “OBS closes” means
These situations have different explanations and fixes. Establish which one happened before changing stream settings:
#1 Best Overall
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
- You quit OBS: OBS stopped sending the feed. Reopen it and start streaming again.
- You minimized or hid OBS: The window is out of view, but the app can still be encoding. Check OBS’s streaming status and YouTube’s incoming feed.
- You closed YouTube’s compact Live Control Panel: That panel is separate from OBS. YouTube documents closing the compact panel by exiting its window; this alone is not the same as quitting the encoder.
- OBS disappeared or crashed: The stream may have lost its encoder, but the title alone does not establish why OBS crashed. Collect its log and a macOS crash report.
- OBS is open, but YouTube has no feed: Investigate streaming status, the connection and the event state rather than assuming OBS was quit.
Restore a stream after quitting OBS
- Open OBS and select the intended YouTube stream. Confirm that you have the correct stream and key selected; YouTube uses the server URL and stream key to receive an encoder’s feed. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check that OBS reports an active stream, then look in YouTube’s Live Control Room for an incoming feed or preview.
- Leave OBS running. Minimize or hide the window if needed, but don’t quit the app while it is encoding and sending the stream.
- Check the YouTube event state. Confirm the intended event is still active and receiving the feed. YouTube distinguishes starting and ending a stream through the encoder and the Live Control Room.
If OBS remains open but YouTube loses the feed
- Check OBS’s streaming status. Determine whether OBS still says it is streaming or reports a connection issue.
- Inspect the current OBS log. Use it to look for evidence of a connection failure or another error. Avoid assuming a particular Mac mini, network device, stream key or encoder setting is responsible without evidence from your setup.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room. Look for an incoming feed and verify the event has not ended. A missing feed and an ended event are different problems.
- If OBS crashed, collect diagnostic information. Save the OBS log and the macOS crash report. The available evidence does not identify a Mac mini-specific crash cause, so a setting change cannot be promised as a fix.
YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop options affect whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder; they do not keep OBS encoding after the app is closed. Review YouTube’s stream settings documentation if you need to check those controls.
When to use a separate encoder
If you specifically need to quit OBS while continuing to broadcast, another encoder must keep sending a feed. A hardware encoder is one possible approach; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. It is not required just to solve an ordinary case where OBS was quit.

Before choosing a device, verify its compatibility with your exact setup. Check supported inputs, resolution and frame rate, encoding formats, network requirements, and whether it operates without a host computer. The sources here do not validate a particular model.
Mac mini and OBS compatibility checks
OBS lists Intel or Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 Big Sur or later among its system requirements. It also cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee a computer can stream or record a particular workload. Check OBS system requirements and the version-sensitive macOS compatibility table against your installed macOS and OBS version before upgrading.

OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox support on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, including H.264 streaming support on Apple Silicon. Encoder selection can affect performance, but it does not change the basic requirement: the active encoder application or device has to keep running and sending the feed. See OBS hardware encoding.
