If OBS keeps disconnecting from a YouTube stream on Windows, first check whether its Dropped Frames counter rises when the interruption happens. Rising dropped frames point to the connection between your PC and YouTube’s ingest server; an Encoding overloaded warning or choppy output instead points toward GPU or rendering load. Follow the branch that matches the evidence, and save an OBS log from the failed session before making several changes.

Identify what is stopping

Watch the OBS status area during a stream and note the exact message and whether the dropped-frames count increases. OBS says dropped frames occur when the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; enough dropped frames can disconnect the session. That points to the network route from your computer to the ingest server, not automatically to a defect in OBS. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024.

  • Dropped frames rise or OBS disconnects: follow the network and bitrate checks below.
  • “Encoding overloaded” appears, or the output is choppy without rising dropped frames: follow the performance checks.
  • OBS stays connected and its dropped-frames count stays steady, but viewers buffer: that is different from OBS losing its connection. Check YouTube’s current stream-health diagnostics rather than treating it as the same fault.

Save a log that includes the interruption. Record the exact error, whether OBS remained connected, and what changed during tests. An OBS log can help distinguish a connection problem from an encoding problem.

If dropped frames rise, test bitrate and the connection

Lower the video bitrate

In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce the video bitrate. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting rule of thumb, not a guarantee. The relevant figure is stable upload capacity under real conditions, not just a best-case speed-test result. Lowering bitrate can improve stability, but reduces image quality.

Try another ingest server as an isolation test

Open Settings → Stream and select another server if the service offers one. If a different server works, that is useful evidence about the route to the original ingest server; changing servers does not itself fix that route. Testing another service can also help distinguish a service-specific issue from a broader connection problem, but it does not establish the cause on its own.

Test OBS network options carefully

In OBS on Windows, open Settings → Advanced → Network. Try Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing as tests, not guaranteed fixes; OBS notes some users report benefit and that these options add detail to logs. Leave Bind to IP at Default. You can test IPv4-only, but if it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.

Use dynamic bitrate only as a quality trade-off

The option Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. OBS says it does not resolve the underlying cause and can reduce picture quality. Treat it as a way to manage congestion, not a substitute for diagnosing an unstable connection.

Check Windows software and your network path

OBS identifies VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi instability, router or modem problems, and faulty network hardware as possible contributors. Test changes one at a time so you can tell which one affects the disconnect.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
  • VPN: If one is active, test a stream without it. A VPN can change the route to the ingest server.
  • Firewall or antivirus: If you suspect security software, make a temporary diagnostic test. If that confirms interference, add an OBS exception, then turn protection back on. Do not leave security protection disabled.
  • Traffic-prioritization or “optimization” utilities: Check whether a utility is changing network traffic. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC Software Suite as examples. Its guide recommends disabling the former option or reinstalling the latter using hardware drivers only; other utilities may also affect traffic.
  • Network drivers: Check for current drivers from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.
  • Wi-Fi and local hardware: If you are on Wi-Fi, test wired Ethernet. Restart the modem or router if appropriate. Replace a cable, router, network card, switch, or extender only if tests point to that component as faulty.
  • ISP: If connection problems persist after local tests, contact your internet provider.

A wired test is useful evidence, not a guarantee. If you are considering a cable or other hardware, test existing equipment first; OBS does not require a particular cable category to stream.

If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce local load

OBS uses the GPU to render and composite scenes. Games and other GPU-intensive work can leave too little capacity for that job. The OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, dated June 12, 2021, recommends these Windows steps:

  1. Run OBS as administrator: close OBS, right-click its shortcut, and choose Run as administrator. Check whether the overload returns.
  2. Free GPU resources: close or reduce competing GPU-heavy applications. If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower demanding in-game graphics settings.
  3. Reduce output demands: lower output resolution or frame rate in OBS. If 60 fps is not working, test 30 fps.
  4. Simplify the scene: disable complex sources, resource-heavy filters, or browser sources one at a time. Observe whether the overload stops before removing more elements.

OBS’s performance guide also discusses Windows Game Mode and Game DVR, but its advice includes Windows 10-specific distinctions. Check your Windows version before changing those settings; do not assume an older Windows-specific recommendation applies to every current installation.

These OBS symptoms alone do not establish a YouTube account restriction, invalid stream key, ingest requirement, or platform-wide outage. For those possibilities, check the current YouTube Live Control Room diagnostics and official YouTube guidance for the specific message shown. The available OBS troubleshooting guides do not determine account- or stream-key-specific conditions.
