You can stream a prepared Tamil devotional playlist continuously to YouTube from a Linux VPS with FFmpeg: clear the rights to every recording and visual, prepare a compatible media file, copy the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and run FFmpeg on the VPS. First confirm that your channel can go live. Then test the stream and monitor it; a VPS process restart alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Check channel eligibility and rights first

Confirm the channel can stream

YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s live-stream access before preparing an unattended broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance was accessed on October 3, 2026.

Clear the actual music and artwork

A devotional subject does not make a recording, performance, arrangement, or image free to rebroadcast. Verify that your permissions cover the specific recordings and artwork, the territories where the stream will be available, and any archive or replay you plan to keep. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party matches; a detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even a license may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting before you go live. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains the matching process.

No particular Tamil devotional playlist is established as public domain or cleared for rebroadcast by its genre or title alone. Check each recording and its rights chain rather than assuming the underlying devotional composition settles the rights to a modern performance or recording.

Prepare the playlist as a media input

Use one tested file for the simplest setup

For a reproducible first stream, render the playlist into one media file containing both the video and audio you want YouTube to receive. A static devotional image or visual can accompany the music, but you need rights to that visual too. Confirm that the file actually contains usable video and audio streams; the example command below expects both.

A single file avoids the extra synchronization and transition issues that can arise when looping a multi-file playlist. If you instead feed several files to FFmpeg, test the actual files and transitions: timestamps, codec compatibility, gapless joins, and concat or filter behavior can all affect playback.

Choose a quality your source and VPS can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. For a basic SDR stream, use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it must not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026.

Example target YouTube-listed video bitrate Practical consideration
720p30 H.264 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended Lower outbound bandwidth and encoder load than 1080p30; appropriate only if it suits the source and desired presentation.
1080p30 H.264 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended More bandwidth and encoding capacity are needed; the command below uses 5 Mbps, the listed minimum, not the recommendation.
1080p30 H.265 or AV1 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended These are YouTube’s listed figures for these codecs; confirm your FFmpeg build and VPS can encode the chosen codec reliably.

These are YouTube’s published encoder figures, not a guarantee that a particular VPS plan can sustain the bitrate. The input encode, VPS CPU, outbound network, and ingest path are all constraints. Measure actual upload capacity from the VPS and leave headroom rather than relying on a provider’s advertised plan rate. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into viewer output formats.

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule one, and open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube exposes the RTMPS URL from the lock icon in the Stream URL field under Stream settings. Prefer this encrypted ingest URL to the ordinary RTMP URL. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; Google’s developer documentation specifies port 443 for the ingest connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  3. Copy the stream key. Keep it secret. Do not put a real key in a public tutorial, screenshot, source repository, support ticket, or shell history. The command below uses placeholders: substitute the exact URL and key from your own Live Control Room locally.

The example uses the primary ingest address and one FFmpeg process; YouTube’s API also documents primary and backup ingestion addresses, but a backup setup is not required for this basic workflow. The LiveStreams API documentation describes stream configuration and health fields.

Run FFmpeg on the VPS

Example: loop one prepared MP4

Install an FFmpeg build that supports the RTMPS protocol and H.264 encoding, upload devotional-loop.mp4 to the VPS, and run a command like this from a private shell:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i devotional-loop.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY'

This is an illustrative command to adapt and test, not a universal or vendor-certified configuration. -re paces file input in real time; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -r 30 selects 30 fps; and a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps gives a two-second keyframe interval. The H.264 settings select a 5 Mbps video rate with a 10 Mbps buffer, while AAC is encoded as stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. The FLV muxer is used for this RTMP-family output. FFmpeg documents real-time file streaming and the RTMPS protocol in its protocol documentation.

Replace the final quoted placeholder with the exact RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, using the format your account displays. Do not leave a real key in shell history or a saved script with permissive access. If the media file lacks a video or audio stream, this command is not suitable unchanged; use a design that generates the missing stream or prepare a file with both.

The 5 Mbps setting is YouTube’s listed minimum for 1080p30 H.264, while its recommendation is 14 Mbps. If your VPS cannot sustain the higher rate, consider a lower-resolution target such as 720p30, and set the encoder to match. Do not simply raise the bitrate without checking network capacity and CPU headroom.

Preview, verify stream health, and supervise the process

  1. Test before the planned broadcast. Use the actual playlist, representative audio and moving video, and the actual VPS. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing representative content before going live. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
  2. Check FFmpeg output and YouTube preview. Confirm FFmpeg is reading both streams and sending data without repeated errors. In Live Control Room, check the preview before starting or sharing the live event.
  3. Watch stream health and review messages. Monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health display and address warnings while the stream is running. For automation, the LiveStreams API exposes status, health, and configuration-issue information; it is a more technical route than manual Studio monitoring.
  4. Arrange process supervision. A service manager such as systemd can start FFmpeg at VPS boot and restart a failed process. Configure monitoring or alerts appropriate to your use, and check the YouTube preview after a restart.

A process restart does not guarantee that the live event remains healthy, that playback resumes at the intended playlist position, or that YouTube and the host are available. Validate the whole recovery path on the VPS instead of treating automatic process restart as uninterrupted service.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Connection or authentication fails: Recheck the RTMPS URL and stream key in the current Live Control Room settings. Make sure you copied the RTMPS address, supplied the key in the expected format, and are not using an expired or changed key. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
  • Stream health reports unstable bitrate or dropped frames: Test outbound capacity from the VPS while considering other traffic. Lower the target resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen rate; also check whether the VPS is CPU-bound while encoding.
  • Preview has no picture, no sound, or incompatible output: Inspect the input streams and FFmpeg’s output. This example expects video and audio in the MP4, encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, and sends progressive 30 fps output. Prepare a suitable input or adjust the pipeline if those assumptions do not fit.
  • Playback freezes or transitions fail: Test the complete file and loop boundary. For multiple source files, check timestamps, matching codecs and parameters, synchronization, and concat/filter behavior with the exact playlist.
  • YouTube inserts a placeholder or interrupts the stream: Treat this as a possible third-party-content match, not an FFmpeg bitrate fault. Review YouTube’s notice and resolve rights with the relevant owner; for licensed content, ask whether your channel must be added to the Content ID allowlist.
  • FFmpeg restarts but the live event does not recover as expected: Check the live preview and event state after restart, and test whether your chosen supervision and restart behavior resumes the stream in the way you need. A service manager only supervises the local process; it does not ensure a healthy YouTube event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a managed YouTube loop rather than maintaining an FFmpeg process on a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or its pricing page. To try it, start your free day with StreamNeo.
