The lowest-cost DIY approach is to run an encoder on a cloud virtual machine (VM) and send its output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. But the cheapest VM is not automatically the cheapest workable setup: you must budget for the outgoing stream’s data transfer, check the allowance for the VM’s region, and test whether its CPU can sustain your encoding workload. For a prepared-video loop without VM administration, StreamNeo is the first managed option to consider: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Choose the setup that fits your stream
First decide whether you need to transmit a live camera or scene, or simply play prepared videos in a loop. A live scene generally needs an encoder to process its incoming sources. A prepared video may require less processing if it can be sent without re-encoding, but whether a particular VM can handle your source and output settings continuously is something to test, not assume.
| Approach | Best suited to | What you manage |
|---|---|---|
| DIY cloud VM | Creators who want control over the encoder, playlist, and configuration | VM choice and administration, encoding, transfer allowance, monitoring, and recovery |
| Managed cloud service | Creators who want uploaded videos looped without maintaining a VM | Service setup and YouTube stream configuration; check the current provider terms and features |
For a DIY cloud channel, the basic flow is: choose YouTube output settings, run streaming software on a VM, and send the encoded feed to YouTube using RTMPS. AWS describes cloud live-video architectures that use an encoder to deliver a stream for distribution; its architecture material is useful for understanding the pattern, not a guarantee that a particular low-cost VM will work for your stream: AWS video-on-demand and live-streaming architecture.
Set YouTube’s output settings before choosing a VM
The bitrate determines much of the network transfer your continuous stream will consume, so choose a realistic resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate before comparing VM plans. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for encrypted ingest. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| Output | Codec | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | Not stated in YouTube’s cited settings | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | Not stated in YouTube’s cited settings | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a promise that every source will look good at those settings or that every VM can encode them. Test with representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health. For software and encoder context, AWS’s IVS documentation describes OBS and an FFmpeg example for recorded video; it is not a YouTube-specific setup guide: AWS IVS streaming software documentation.
Calculate 30-day transfer from the outgoing bitrate
A 24/7 feed runs for about 720 hours in a 30-day planning month. At a constant bitrate, the approximate decimal transfer is bitrate in megabits per second × 3600 × 720 ÷ 8,000 megabytes per gigabyte. This estimates the stream data only; it excludes other traffic and does not account for provider-specific billing or measurement.

| Constant outgoing bitrate | Approximate transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 GB |
| 3 Mbps | 972 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 2.592 TB |
Use the full outgoing bitrate in this calculation, not just the source file size. A continuous stream sends data even when the video content is static. Compare the estimate with the VM provider’s allowance for the VM’s actual region, and leave room for overhead or other network use.
What the low-cost AWS Lightsail example means in Mumbai
AWS’s public Lightsail pricing table lists a Linux/Unix bundle with public IPv4 for US$7 per month, including 1 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 40 GB SSD storage, and 2 TB of transfer on the general table. AWS states that bundles in the Mumbai region include half the transfer allowance shown in that table, which makes the Mumbai allowance 1 TB for this example. The price and bundle details are AWS figures checked on 2026-10-03; confirm the current regional offer and terms on AWS Lightsail pricing.

- Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
- Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds
- Creator-Grade Backup Solution - Protect your irreplaceable content with automated backups to cloud services, external drives and remote NAS
- Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
Against that 1 TB Mumbai allowance, a constant 3 Mbps feed uses about 972 GB in 30 days before any extra traffic, so it is close to the allowance. An 8 Mbps feed uses about 2.592 TB and exceeds it. The calculation is a planning estimate, not a provider usage quote; AWS’s charging and overage terms should be checked for the region and plan you select.
Check sustained encoding performance, not just the instance price
Lightsail instances use burstable CPU performance. AWS points customers with workloads that require consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding, toward EC2. That guidance means the listed low-cost bundle should not be treated as proof of adequate continuous encoding capacity. The result depends on the source, codec, output resolution and frame rate, encoder settings, and whether the video can be sent without re-encoding. See AWS Lightsail instance guidance.

- Check YouTube stream health and test what happens when the encoder or network connection is interrupted.
- If sustained CPU is insufficient, compare a more capable compute option or use a service that handles cloud playback for you.
AWS does not establish that this particular Lightsail bundle will encode a particular stream continuously. Nor do the cited sources establish a guaranteed 24/7 uptime level for a low-cost VM. Treat the VM choice as workload-specific and validate it before relying on the channel.
Build and test the DIY cloud stream
- Choose the output. In YouTube’s live encoder settings, settle on resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends, and prefer RTMPS for ingest.
- Estimate data use. Calculate 30-day transfer using the complete outgoing bitrate. Compare it with the allowance for the VM’s region, including any regional reduction such as the Mumbai Lightsail rule.
- Select compute for the workload. Decide whether the VM will only play a prepared file or encode a scene. Choose a candidate instance, but do not infer encoding capacity from its monthly price or vCPU count alone.
- Install and configure streaming software. Set the encoder to the output selected for YouTube, and use the stream key from your YouTube live setup. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
- Test a representative stream. Include typical movement and audio, let it run long enough to observe resource use, and inspect YouTube’s stream health. Test reconnect behavior rather than assuming it will recover correctly.
- Monitor after launch. Keep an eye on VM CPU, network usage, transfer consumption, and YouTube stream health. Establish how you will respond to an encoder failure, a dropped ingest connection, or an allowance approaching its limit.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a managed service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from its cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube.

The same product is included on every plan; only the billing duration changes. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
For a DIY comparison, include more than the VM headline price: account for regional transfer limits and overage terms, the compute required for sustained encoding, and the time spent configuring, monitoring, and recovering the stream. A managed service avoids VM administration, but its plan terms and fit still deserve checking. StreamNeo’s own published comparison is vendor-authored and does not independently establish comparative reliability or total cost.
StreamNeo’s published prices are: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year. Billing can be for a day, a week, a month, six months, or a year, and can be cancelled any time. For the monthly option, that is Monthly $9.99 per month.
Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Start your free StreamNeo day.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
Using a cloud VM or a managed loop does not grant rights to the video or music you stream. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the applicable YouTube policies and rights for every playlist item. YouTube’s encoder recommendations address technical delivery, not permission to broadcast content or eligibility to monetize it. Review YouTube’s live streaming settings and guidance and its current copyright and monetization policies before scheduling a continuous channel.
Quick Recap
Common failures and what to check
- Stream health reports bitrate or connection problems: confirm the configured output bitrate and encoder settings, inspect VM network usage, and test RTMPS connectivity. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health rather than assuming a successful start means a healthy stream.
- The stream starts but the VM struggles over time: check CPU usage and whether the encoder is re-encoding. A burstable low-cost VM may not sustain the workload; test a different compute size or architecture.
- The channel stops after a period of continuous streaming: inspect the encoder process, VM status, network connection, and YouTube ingest status. Test restart and reconnect behavior, and ensure the stream key is configured correctly.
- Transfer use is higher than expected: recalculate from the outgoing bitrate and actual time streamed, then compare with the region-specific allowance. The 30-day figures above assume a constant bitrate and include no additional traffic.
- The picture or audio is poor despite a stable connection: test with representative motion and sound, verify the selected codec and resolution, and use YouTube’s published bitrate guidance as a starting point rather than a substitute for a quality check.
