Keep OBS connected to the same YouTube Live event and switch the lesson playback inside OBS. For automatic playback in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video Source playlist; to choose lessons yourself, use separate media sources or scenes. Rehearse the exact setup before going live, because transitions and playback behavior depend on your configuration.

Choose how you want lessons to rotate

  • Automatic, in order: Use a VLC Video Source playlist when lessons should play one after another without an operator choosing each transition.
  • Manual selection: Use separate Media Sources or scenes when an operator should decide which lesson appears next.

In both approaches, keep the encoder output connected to the same YouTube Live event. YouTube explains that ending a stream involves stopping content from the encoder; changing the media inside OBS lets the event remain live while its program material changes. This is not a guarantee of a glitch-free transition, so test your configuration.

Set up automatic sequential playback in OBS

  1. Install VLC and check OBS. Install VLC, then restart or check OBS Studio to confirm that the VLC Video Source is available.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene that will stay on air, add a VLC Video Source and add the recorded lesson files to its playlist.
  3. Set the order and looping behavior. Turn shuffle off for predictable playback. Enable Loop Playlist only if you want the lessons to start over after the final file; otherwise, leave it off.
  4. Set behavior when the source is hidden. OBS offers options that stop and restart, pause and resume, or continue playback while a source is hidden. Choose the behavior that matches your planned scene changes. If the source may be hidden and shown, confirm that it resumes at the intended lesson position.
  5. Rehearse the sequence. Start a private or unlisted test event. Confirm picture and sound, then watch the transition from one file to the next before using the playlist on a real lesson stream.

Choose each lesson manually

  1. Add each lesson as its own Media Source, or place each lesson in its own scene.
  2. Preview the relevant source or scene and switch to it when you are ready. Keep OBS’s encoder output connected while you switch.
  3. Rehearse the switch. OBS notes that a media source may reload when it becomes visible, which can cause a short period with no source on screen.

Separate sources or scenes give the operator control over what plays next; a VLC playlist is the better fit for automatic sequential playback. Avoid editing a live playlist or changing sources for the first time during an important event.

Keep OBS, the encoder, and the YouTube event connected

The encoder sends video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide says to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream. To rotate lessons without ending the live event, leave that output running and change the media being sent from OBS (or from the encoder you have selected). YouTube does not promise that every encoder, plugin, or live playlist edit will transition without a glitch.

YouTube advises setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its streaming tips recommend leaving bandwidth headroom; the page specifies 20% as recommended. Check the actual preview and stream before your audience arrives.

Check channel eligibility and plan for the archive

  • Eligibility: YouTube’s getting-started guidance says a channel must be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. It also states a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check your channel’s current eligibility before event setup.
  • Replay backup: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the lesson replay matters, record a local backup as well. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

When to consider scheduled playback hardware

YouTube’s verified encoder list describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone encoder and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media to stream directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware alternative, not a requirement for the OBS method. Confirm current availability, feature details, and price before buying; the cited information does not establish a current price or product comparison.

Troubleshoot common rotation problems

  • The VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC and restart or recheck OBS, then confirm the source is available before building the playlist.
  • Lessons play in the wrong order: Turn shuffle off and verify the playlist order in the VLC Video Source.
  • The next lesson does not start after the last one: Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. If it should end after the last lesson, leave looping off.
  • A lesson restarts or resumes at the wrong position after a scene change: Review the source’s hidden-state behavior (stop/restart, pause/resume, or continue) and test the hide-and-show sequence in rehearsal.
  • The screen goes blank during a manual switch: A media source may reload when it becomes visible. Preview and rehearse the switch; consider arranging the transition so the source is ready before it appears.
  • The event ends or disconnects when you switch lessons: Check that OBS’s encoder output remains connected and that you are switching program material inside OBS, not stopping the output to YouTube.
  • The stream has unstable audio or video: Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor the stream. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% on its streaming tips page.
  • No archive appears for a long stream: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Make a local recording when preserving the full lesson stream matters.
