Network idleness can help, but it does not prove that a component has finished rendering. Prefer an explicit application condition over an arbitrary sleep.
Choose a readiness condition that matches the page
A screenshot is only useful as a regression check if it is taken after the relevant state appears. Puppeteer offers several waits, but they establish different things:

| Network idle | The page reaches a quiet network interval. | Network activity is a useful part of the page’s rendering lifecycle. |
Puppeteer recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements. A selector’s presence or visibility is not proof that its data is current, and network idleness is not proof that a particular component has completed its visual update. If a page polls, streams, or otherwise keeps making background requests, make an application-owned condition—not network idle alone—the decisive signal.
Build a CI test around explicit readiness
This example uses Node.js with Puppeteer. The application-specific selector should represent a state that means the screenshot is ready, such as a loaded report or a completed results panel. Replace the URL and selector with those from your application.

});The navigation wait is an initial gate, not the definition of readiness. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2'; pair a network condition with a meaningful application signal when the UI can continue changing after requests settle. Use an explicit timeout so a missing readiness state fails the test instead of producing a misleading image.
Use locators when interaction or movement matters
When the test must interact with the target, Puppeteer’s locator API is the recommended selection and interaction approach. Locator actions can wait until the target’s bounding box is stable across two consecutive animation frames, which is useful for UI that moves during layout. A visible selector wait, by contrast, only checks its specified selector condition; it does not itself establish that the element has stopped moving.

Set viewport and capture scope deliberately
Keep the viewport, device scale factor, and capture options fixed in CI. Use fullPage: true when the whole document is under test. Use a clip when a specific rectangular region is the subject of the comparison, or capture a single element when unrelated page changes would add noise. PNG is Puppeteer’s default screenshot format; set the format explicitly if your test depends on a particular output type.
For an element capture, wait for the target and then call elementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed. The call throws if the element detaches from the DOM, so dynamic interfaces may require re-querying the element after state changes.

Understand Puppeteer’s documented defaults
In Puppeteer 25.12.0, Page.waitForSelector() has a documented default timeout of 30 seconds. Set timeout explicitly when the test needs a different limit. This is an API default, not a recommendation that every CI test should wait that long.
In the same version’s WaitForNetworkIdleOptions reference, the default idle time is 500 milliseconds. waitForNetworkIdle() resolves after the network is idle and always waits at least the configured idle time. That interval describes network activity, not visual readiness; it should not be treated as a universal delay that makes dynamic content safe to capture.

Troubleshoot inconsistent or failed captures
- The screenshot shows a loading state: Navigation may have completed before the application rendered its data. Add a selector or locator condition tied to the completed state and verify that the application exposes it only when the relevant content is ready.
- The network-idle wait never completes: A page may keep background requests active. Do not rely on network idleness as the only gate; wait for the tested component’s application-specific ready state instead.
- The target is visible but shifts in the screenshot: Visibility does not establish layout stability. Use a locator action or condition that incorporates the documented stable-bounding-box check where applicable, and capture after the relevant UI transition.
- The selector wait times out: Check that the selector matches the rendered DOM and that the requested visible or hidden condition is appropriate. The timeout reports that the specified condition was not met; it does not identify the application bug by itself.
- Element capture throws: The element may have detached before the screenshot call. Re-query it after the state change and capture the current handle.
- Full-page output includes unrelated differences: Narrow the capture to a clip or the relevant element, and keep viewport and screenshot options consistent across runs.
Puppeteer documents API behavior, but does not guarantee identical pixels across operating systems, browser builds, fonts, GPU settings, or CI images. The appropriate visual-diff tolerance and cross-platform reproducibility setup depend on your test environment; they are not guaranteed by Puppeteer.
