Screenshot.rocks does not automatically archive websites. Its browser extension captures the visible part of the active tab after you click it, then opens the image in its editor. For scheduled captures and a retained history, use a hosted archiving service or build a workflow with a screenshot API or command-line tool. You can still use Screenshot.rocks to style and export a one-time capture—or import a full-page screenshot made elsewhere.

What Screenshot.rocks can—and cannot—do

Screenshot.rocks is a browser and mobile screenshot mockup editor. In the documented extension flow, you open a page, click the extension, and edit the captured image. The extension captures only the visible area of the current tab; it does not take full-page screenshots, run in the background, schedule repeated captures, or maintain an archive. Its documentation says it does not store the screenshot. See the Screenshot.rocks extension documentation.

The documentation describes Chrome and Edge extensions, but not a Safari extension. It says the extension requests active-tab access in Chrome and Edge. The Chrome Web Store listing showed version 1.1, updated September 10, 2024; listing figures such as user counts and ratings can change and do not establish archiving capabilities.

Make a one-time capture with Screenshot.rocks

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in a supported browser.
  2. Scroll to the portion you want to show. The extension captures the visible tab, not the entire page.
  3. Click the Screenshot.rocks extension button. The captured image opens in the editor.
  4. Choose a browser or mobile frame and background, then export the result.

For a long page, first use a browser or another capture method that supports full-page screenshots. Then import that image into Screenshot.rocks for presentation. This creates an edited image, not an automated or preserved archive.

Choose a workflow for recurring screenshots

Pick an approach based on the number of URLs, capture schedule, required history and export, whether you need change alerts, where you want files stored, and how much setup and maintenance you can take on. The options below are documented examples, not an independent performance comparison; verify current plans, limits, and features with each provider.

Hosted archiving service

A hosted service is the most direct route if you want to add websites, set a schedule, and browse prior captures without maintaining your own scheduler and storage. Snapshot Archive describes scheduled full-page captures, visual comparisons, email alerts, API access, and exports. Its how-it-works page says the free plan includes three websites with daily captures. These are vendor statements, and plan terms, retention, and features may change; check Snapshot Archive’s how-it-works page for current details.

Screenshot API plus object storage

An API workflow gives you control over capture timing, storage, and metadata, but you must connect the pieces. ScreenshotAPI’s guide describes requesting a full-page rendered PNG, then saving it to storage such as Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, or Google Cloud Storage along with its capture time and SHA-256 checksum. A scheduler runs the capture pipeline, and an index makes the results retrievable. The guide was marked “Last updated: 2026-08-22” and advertises 200 free screenshots per month; treat the quota and pricing as vendor claims that may change. See ScreenshotAPI’s archiving guide.

Self-managed command line and GitHub Actions

For a small technical archive where keeping screenshots in a code repository is acceptable, shot-scraper documents a CLI workflow that runs configured captures in GitHub Actions and commits results to a repository. This makes the workflow inspectable, but you are responsible for its configuration, repository organization, and ongoing maintenance. The documentation PDF carries release label 1.11-3-g760c114. See the shot-scraper documentation.

Keep an archive useful and comparable

  • Record the capture context: store the URL and capture time in UTC alongside each image.
  • Choose coverage deliberately: decide whether each record should be a viewport capture or a full-page capture.
  • Keep comparisons consistent: use the same viewport or device size across captures when visual changes matter.
  • Preserve originals: retain the original image and associated metadata if later review matters. A checksum can help detect whether a file changed after capture; it does not by itself establish legal admissibility.
  • Plan retrieval and retention: decide how files will be named or indexed, how long they should remain available, and how you will export or restore them.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

If you want to build a capture workflow around an API, ScreenshotNeo is one option to evaluate first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Its response headers report the page verdict and billing status. The API provides image or PDF capture; recurring archiving still requires you to schedule calls and retain the resulting files.

Or skip the browser setup:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting the extension to run on a schedule: its documented flow is a click on the active tab. Use a scheduled archiving service or automate captures separately.
  • Assuming a capture covers the entire page: the extension captures the visible area. Use a full-page-capable capture process, then import the image if you want to edit it in Screenshot.rocks.
  • Treating an edited mockup as the archive original: keep the original capture and its timestamp and URL if you need a record for later comparison.
  • Assuming a repository workflow is maintenance-free: GitHub Actions can run configured captures, but you still need to manage configuration, storage organization, and retrieval.
  • Choosing based on an old quota or feature list: verify current provider limits, retention, export, and schedule details before relying on them.
