First identify where the skipping happens: OBS’s dropped-frame counter points to a network problem; rendering or encoding lag points to OBS performance; buffering reported only by viewers is a playback issue; and a video visibly jumping or stopping in OBS may be a media-source issue. Those symptoms need different fixes, so check the OBS Stats window and YouTube stream health before changing settings.
Identify what is skipping before changing settings
Observe the stream in OBS and, if possible, ask a viewer what they see. Note whether the symptom starts immediately or only after the stream has been running for a while.
- OBS dropped frames increase: investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server and whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Rendering or encoding lag appears in OBS Stats or logs: investigate GPU workload, scene complexity, sources, and output settings.
- OBS looks normal, but viewers report buffering: investigate viewer playback and whether your bitrate is accessible to their devices and connections.
- The media itself jumps, freezes, or reaches its end: investigate the source’s playback and loop or restart behavior. The symptom alone does not identify which media-source setting is responsible.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, distinguishes connection trouble from other streaming problems. Its encoding-performance guidance covers rendering and encoding workload; neither establishes the cause of a particular looping-source issue.
Fix OBS network-dropped frames
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. Work through these checks when the OBS network-dropped-frame counter is rising.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Use a wired connection if possible. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired networking. A cable can help with connection instability, but it will not resolve rendering or encoding lag.
- Check upload capacity and reduce bitrate if needed. Measure or otherwise verify the available upload capacity while the stream is running, and choose a bitrate the connection can sustain. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee for every connection or platform. Leave room for other network traffic.
- Test another ingest server or service option. If OBS or the selected service offers an alternate server, try it as a diagnostic. A different route may help reveal whether the problem is server- or route-specific; it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check software and network configuration. Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewall or security software, network “optimization” utilities, and outdated network drivers. Change one item at a time so you can tell whether it affected the counter.
- On Windows, test OBS’s documented network options. OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as options some users report helping. It also suggests checking Bind to IP; if needed, test IPv4-only, then return to IPv4/IPv6 if there is no improvement. These are diagnostic options, not universal settings to enable blindly.
- Contact your ISP if the problem persists. Congestion or routing beyond your control may be involved.
OBS also offers dynamic bitrate adjustment as a congestion fallback. It can lower video quality and does not fix the underlying connection problem, so consider that trade-off before relying on it for a study stream.
Fix rendering or encoding lag
If OBS reports rendering or encoding trouble rather than network drops, focus on the work OBS must perform. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; demanding sources, filters, complex scenes, or other GPU workloads can leave too little capacity.
- Reduce avoidable GPU load. Close only applications you know are using substantial GPU resources, simplify scenes and scene collections, and remove costly sources or filters that are not needed.
- Check media and capture source dimensions. Use sources at a resolution suitable for your stream output rather than making OBS process unnecessarily large inputs.
- Inspect sources even when hidden. OBS notes that sources may require resources even when they are not visible. Review unused or hidden sources as well as what appears on screen.
- Test a lower output resolution or frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the output resolution or frame rate if the current workload is too high. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working. Treat this as a diagnostic adjustment, not a universal ideal: it changes the stream’s output and may not address a network or media-source problem.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS lists this as a possible quick fix for GPU-overload issues, not a guaranteed cure.
After each change, observe the relevant OBS Stats or log indicators under the same streaming conditions. If the symptom does not change, restore the setting where appropriate and test the next likely cause.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings against your actual output
YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Select a bitrate based on the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no one correct bitrate for every study stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The page did not state a publication year for the table. Use the row that matches your encoder and frame rate; these are platform recommendations, not a diagnosis of a particular stream.
| Codec | Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |

| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Do not apply these figures to another resolution or frame rate without checking YouTube’s matching recommendation. Also ensure the chosen bitrate is sustainable on your connection: a platform recommendation cannot compensate for insufficient or unstable upload capacity.

When OBS is fine but viewers still buffer
Viewer buffering can occur even when OBS shows no dropped frames. A viewer’s location, device, and network can affect playback, so ask whether the issue affects everyone or only particular viewers before changing OBS settings. If many viewers have trouble, consider lowering the bitrate or otherwise staying within YouTube’s recommendations, especially if broad accessibility matters.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not eliminate local playback constraints for an individual viewer.
When the video source itself jumps or stops looping
If the source visibly skips, freezes, or reaches its end while OBS’s network and performance indicators remain normal, examine the source’s playback and restart behavior rather than changing the stream bitrate first. The right steps depend on the source type and how it is configured; the available guidance does not establish a universal fix for every 24/7 looping setup.
