If a Screenshot.rocks image looks outdated, first check whether you are looking at an old saved image or a genuinely new capture. Saved screenshots do not update when a page changes. If a fresh online capture is also old, the difference may come from the page or assets delivered to Screenshot.rocks’ remote browser—not necessarily from a cached screenshot. Screenshot.rocks’ reviewed help pages do not say whether its service caches generated captures or provide a force-fresh control.
First identify which image is old
A screenshot file is a snapshot, not a live connection to its webpage. If a page changed after you exported, copied, or embedded the image, the image will remain unchanged until you make a new capture and replace it wherever it appears.
If you have just generated a new screenshot and it still shows old content, investigate the capture context and the responses the target website serves. Those are different problems from an old file being displayed again.
Check how the page was captured
Screenshot.rocks’ online generator loads the target URL in a server-side browser as a first-time visitor and captures the first screen. Its extension captures the visible part of the tab already open in your browser. The two methods can therefore show different versions or states of the same site.

The online service cannot access content behind your login, reach a local address such as localhost, or capture a site that blocks automated browsers. The extension’s help recommends it for logged-in pages and suggests capturing and importing an image for local or staging sites and particular interface states. For full-page captures, Screenshot.rocks directs users to browser-native capture workflows and then importing the resulting image.
When comparing a remote capture with your own browser, check whether the page redirects, shows a consent prompt, uses localization or personalization, or presents different content to a first-time visitor. These are possible explanations to investigate, not documented causes for a specific capture.

Investigate the responses delivered to a fresh capture
If the online capture is old while your browser shows the current page, inspect what the target website delivers remotely. Compare the HTML and the image, script, and stylesheet responses in the relevant context. A remote renderer can receive older resources if the website’s delivery path supplies them.
Browser and shared caches
HTTP caching uses response and request directives to determine freshness and revalidation. The Cache-Control header applies to browser caches and shared caches, including proxies and CDNs. If evidence points to a stale response, review the live site’s cache configuration and use the site or CDN operator’s documented invalidation process. A cache is a possibility to test, not proof of what happened to a particular URL.

Service workers
A site’s service worker can intercept requests and return resources from its own cache. See MDN’s guide to using service workers. If the page is old in your own browser too, investigate the deployment and the site’s caching behavior there; do not assume the same service-worker path explains a separate server-side capture.

Screenshot.rocks’ online screenshot generator help describes a server-side, first-time-visitor capture of the first screen. Its extension help describes capturing the visible part of the current browser tab and recommends browser capture or import for certain private, local, staging, or specific-state cases. The online tool’s FAQ lists a mistyped address, slow page loading, and automated-browser blocking among reasons a capture may fail.

The reviewed official pages do not specify a generated-screenshot cache lifetime, cache key, or force-fresh/invalidation setting. Whether Screenshot.rocks reused an earlier generated image is therefore unresolved from those pages. Avoid assigning the cause to a Screenshot.rocks screenshot cache unless service documentation or a reproducible test establishes it.
Work through the diagnosis
- Confirm what you are viewing. Determine whether the image is a saved export, a copy in documentation, an existing embed, or the result of a fresh online capture. Replace an old file or embed with a new image if the source page has changed.
- Compare capture contexts. Open the same public URL in your normal browser and in the online generator. Check redirects, first-visit prompts, localization, personalization, and login requirements that could make the views differ.
- If only the online result is old, inspect remote responses. Compare the page HTML and its image, script, and stylesheet responses, then review relevant cache directives or site-controlled service-worker behavior.
- If both views are old, check the site’s deployment. Verify the live origin and the site’s cache configuration. If evidence points to an intermediary cache, follow the operator’s documented invalidation process.
- For a private, local, staging, or specific interface state, capture where that state exists. Use the extension for the visible current tab where appropriate, or capture the image in a browser and import it. Use browser-native capture and import if you need a full-page image.
- If the new image is correct but a preview is old, refresh the display layer. Replace the copied image or refresh the embed, app, or documentation that displays it. A fresh capture does not automatically update an image already copied elsewhere.
When a capture fails instead of showing old content
Screenshot.rocks’ FAQ identifies a mistyped address, a site taking too long to load, and a site blocking automated browsers as common failure causes. Check the URL and try again; if automated capture remains unavailable, capture the page yourself. A failed capture is distinct from a successful new capture that contains old page content.
