FFmpeg stutter can also come from slow encoding, a weak source, or insufficient upload capacity. If your FFmpeg command writes a local recording while streaming, temporarily remove that extra output and compare the result under otherwise similar conditions. Then match FFmpeg’s progress and errors, storage activity, CPU use, and YouTube stream health to the times the stutter occurs.
Find where the stutter enters the stream
A slow disk is a hypothesis, not a diagnosis. Map the path through your FFmpeg process before changing settings: the input may be a file on the VPS, a live capture device, a network source, or generated content; the output may go to YouTube, a local archive, or both. Logs and temporary files may also share the constrained volume. FFmpeg supports different input and output types, so determine whether your workload depends on disk reads, writes, or both. - File input: FFmpeg must read the source as it processes it. Look for competing reads and correlate storage activity with any slowdown.
- Local archive: A simultaneous recording adds writes. If it is not essential to the test, remove that output temporarily.
- Network or capture input: A disk may be incidental to the main media path, though logs, temporary files, or an archive can still add I/O.
YouTube recommends checking encoder errors, CPU load, local archive quality when available, and the outbound connection—not assuming one cause from the playback symptom. YouTube stream troubleshooting
Run a controlled test before changing the VPS
- Write down the actual FFmpeg command’s input, YouTube output, and any additional outputs. Note the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- If the process writes a local recording, run a short representative test without that extra output. Keep the source, encoding settings, and network path as similar as practical, and avoid unrelated disk-heavy jobs during the comparison.
- Record when FFmpeg falls behind or reports errors. Compare those times with the VPS’s available storage read/write activity, latency, and queueing metrics, along with CPU use and network behavior.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and inspect the local archive if one is being made. Review FFmpeg progress and error output over the same interval.
There is no universal VPS disk-latency or throughput threshold established for this problem. Guest-visible metrics may not reveal underlying host contention; what they show depends on the provider and virtualization stack. A single improved run after removing an archive is useful evidence, but not proof by itself—repeat the comparison long enough to cover the conditions that caused the original stutter.

Separate disk trouble from encoding and network trouble
Use the output and encoder behavior as clues
If output already looks or sounds wrong in the encoder path or local archive, investigate the source and encoding path. Check FFmpeg’s progress and errors and whether the CPU can sustain the requested frame rate. If the encoder preview and local archive are clean but YouTube’s stream health is poor, prioritize the outbound connection. These clues narrow the search; they do not independently prove a cause.
Check upload capacity against the configured bitrate
The VPS must sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth room; that is network headroom guidance, not a disk benchmark. If the connection cannot sustain the configured rate, lower the bitrate or improve the outbound connection, then test again. YouTube streaming tips

Check storage measurements at the time of the symptom
Use the operating-system or provider tools available to you to compare storage activity, latency, and queueing with FFmpeg slowdowns. Do not infer that disk is responsible just because a VPS has a modest storage plan, and do not treat a particular metric as a universal pass/fail threshold. If your provider does not expose useful measurements, ask it how the VPS storage is provisioned and measured.
Apply the fix that matches the evidence
Extra local writes are the likely constraint
Remove or relocate the unnecessary archive output, or reduce competing writes, then repeat the test. If an archive is required, measure whether its destination can handle the workload. A hosted VPS may not allow attachment of an external physical drive, so confirm storage options with the provider rather than assuming one can be added.

Reading the source file is the likely constraint
Reduce competing reads and ask the provider about the storage performance characteristics and upgrade or migration options for that VPS. Compare documented storage type, provisioning or sharing, sustained read behavior for your workload, and measurement terms. Do not assume a plan upgrade will fix the problem unless the provider’s limits and your measurements support that conclusion.
Encoding cannot keep pace
If CPU or encoder behavior indicates that FFmpeg cannot sustain the requested frame rate, reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity and test. Changing an encoder preset is not an established fix for disk contention; make changes based on encoder evidence.

Outbound network capacity is insufficient
Lower the configured output bitrate or improve the VPS’s outbound connection. Keep YouTube’s recommended upload headroom in view and verify stream health again after the change.
Consider FIFO buffering only for temporary interruptions
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can decouple encoding from output writes and provide buffering and recovery behavior. A finite buffer may smooth a temporary interruption, but it cannot make a persistently under-capacity disk or connection fast enough. Configurations that drop packets risk losing media. Consult the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before choosing FIFO options. FFmpeg muxer documentation

Keep YouTube encoder settings within its guidance
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; up to 60 fps; CBR; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row on the YouTube encoder settings page rather than applying a generic bitrate to every stream. The configured rate also needs to fit the VPS’s sustained upload capacity.
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes demuxer buffering as allowing seeking, while noting that seeking is not possible in some cases. That describes input buffering and seeking; it is not a general cure for slow storage. FFmpeg documentation
Use -re only when file-input pacing is appropriate
FFmpeg documents -re as equivalent to -readrate 1: it paces file input at its native rate. That can be appropriate when simulating a live source from a file, but it does not improve a disk that cannot supply data fast enough. FFmpeg cautions that low read rates on actual capture devices or live streams can cause packet loss. Check the command-line documentation for your installed version before applying read-rate options. Validate the fix before relying on the stream
- Test with representative video motion and audio, not only a brief static segment.
- Watch YouTube stream health and its messages during the test, and review FFmpeg progress and errors.
- If you record locally, confirm that the archive is acceptable as well as the YouTube playback.
- Repeat the test for long enough to include the conditions under which the original stutter appeared.
