For playing a YouTube Live stream on a TV around the clock, a supported Android TV or Google TV device is usually the simpler choice. A Raspberry Pi offers more flexibility, but you must configure its operating system, playback method, startup behavior, and recovery—and verify that it handles your particular stream. Neither option is documented as guaranteed to keep a stream playing without interruption for 24/7.

This comparison is about watching someone else’s YouTube Live stream, not broadcasting a feed from your own camera or computer. If you mean broadcasting, the hardware roles and setup are different.

Which should you choose?

Consideration Raspberry Pi Android TV box
YouTube playback Usually through a browser or configured player; test the exact stream, playback path, and desired quality. YouTube supports selected Android TV televisions and NVIDIA Shield; support for one product does not establish support for every box marketed as Android TV.
Setup More involved: choose the board and OS, prepare storage and power, and configure playback and restart behavior. Usually simpler when the exact model has a supported YouTube app and a TV-style remote-control workflow.
Configuration More flexible as a general-purpose computer. More appliance-like; available controls and background behavior depend on the vendor and OS.
Idle behavior Depends on the OS, browser, player, and power or screen settings. Android TV guidance describes Ambient Mode and Energy Saver behavior; test the settings on the retail device.
Proven 24/7 reliability No cited head-to-head 24/7 endurance result. No cited head-to-head 24/7 endurance result.

Choose Android TV/Google TV if the exact model is supported and you want the most TV-like setup. Choose a Raspberry Pi if you want to configure a small computer yourself and can validate the playback and recovery behavior. For either, test the actual device before relying on it unattended.

Check Android TV support and idle settings

YouTube’s supported-device information names selected televisions with Android TV built in and NVIDIA Shield. “Android TV box” is not enough to establish compatibility: check the exact model, current YouTube app availability, and the seller’s specifications before buying.

Android TV developer guidance says the OS enters Ambient Mode after 10 minutes of user inactivity. Energy Saver follows after an additional interval determined by the device’s Energy Saver setting. Media apps may prevent Ambient Mode while video is actively playing, but the guidance says an app should not suppress it when playback is stopped or paused. Vendor customizations and user settings can affect the experience, so check the retail unit’s screensaver, idle, and energy-saving settings and see what happens when the stream stalls.

Confirm that the stream resumes after the app is closed or the device restarts, rather than assuming it will automatically reopen and continue. The cited documentation does not establish restart or auto-resume behavior for every box.

Set up a Raspberry Pi for playback

A Raspberry Pi can run a media player or browser, but Raspberry Pi’s VLC documentation describes local media playback—not a guarantee of continuous YouTube website playback. Browser, codec, and stream compatibility can vary. Set up the board for your chosen playback route, then test the actual YouTube Live stream at the quality you intend to use.

  1. Choose the board and its matching power supply. Raspberry Pi’s current setup documentation specifies 5 V at 5 A and a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5, and 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. These are model-specific examples; check the power requirements for your board rather than transferring one model’s specification to another. See Raspberry Pi power-supply guidance.
  2. Prepare storage and install an OS. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guidance recommends a microSD card of at least 32 GB. Confirm current requirements for your selected board and OS in the Raspberry Pi setup guidance.
  3. Select and configure a playback method. Raspberry Pi OS documentation says VLC is preinstalled on the full OS and supports command-line and GUI-free playback; Raspberry Pi OS Lite requires VLC packages to be installed separately. See Raspberry Pi OS VLC guidance. For YouTube Live, test your chosen browser or player with the exact stream: VLC support for media formats alone does not prove that a particular YouTube stream will work in it.
  4. Configure unattended startup. Set the browser or player to launch after boot, open the intended stream, and use fullscreen if appropriate. Choose screen and power behavior that does not interrupt playback. The exact steps depend on the OS and playback software you select.
  5. Test recovery on your real setup. Leave the device connected to the intended screen and network, then test a network interruption and a restart. Check whether playback resumes by itself, whether you can restart the Pi remotely if needed, and whether power and network restoration return it to the stream. These behaviors are setup-specific, not assured by the cited Pi documentation.

Do not assume a Pi can sustain a particular YouTube resolution just because the board can play some video at that resolution. An October 2023 Raspberry Pi forum discussion includes engineer observations about Pi 5 playback and the effects of browser, codec, and playback path, but those dated observations are not a current guarantee for your stream or a 24/7 performance benchmark.

Give either device a fair playback and network test

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee: the stream’s resolution and bitrate, other household traffic, Wi-Fi interference, and congestion all affect actual playback.

  • Test on the same network, screen, and stream you intend to use.
  • Observe the device through idle periods and after a stream stalls or pauses.
  • Interrupt the network briefly and check whether playback recovers without manual intervention.
  • Restart the app or device and confirm that you can get back to the stream.
  • If playback buffers, check the connection and software, reopen the app, or restart the app or device. YouTube notes that congestion and other factors can affect live programming.

YouTube’s troubleshooting page discusses playback delay controls for YouTube TV/Primetime live programming: a lower delay uses a smaller playback buffer and can make interruptions more likely, while the page recommends “Default” to minimize interruptions. That context does not mean the same control is available for every YouTube Live stream or device.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep your own uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel—not to watch somebody else’s stream—StreamNeo is a different approach from either playback device. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not broadcast from a camera.

Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; every plan includes the same product and differs only by billing length. The first day is free with no card, once per account. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
