For a 1080p30 H.264 YouTube loop, start at 14 Mbps video; for 1080p60, start at 17 Mbps. YouTube’s current recommendations also call for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 128 kbps. Those are ingest settings, not a guarantee of an uninterrupted stream: your computer and internet connection must sustain the combined video and audio output over time.

Choose the bitrate for your frame rate and codec

YouTube’s video-bitrate table, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the following minimum and recommended rates for 1080p ingest. The recommendations apply to the incoming stream, not necessarily the quality viewers receive after YouTube processes it. YouTube’s live encoder settings may change, so check the current table before going live.

Codec Frame rate Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
H.264 1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264 1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

H.264 is a practical choice when your encoder and ingest workflow support it. AV1 and H.265 have lower listed 1080p rates, but use them only if your chosen encoder and YouTube ingest path support the codec. The example below uses H.264.

Configure the key settings

Video rate and rate control

Set the video rate to the recommendation for your frame rate, then configure the encoder for CBR. YouTube recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. FFmpeg’s generic -b:v and -bufsize options alone do not prove that an encoder is emitting strict CBR; the exact CBR setting depends on the selected encoder. Check the installed encoder’s documentation and confirm the actual output behavior.

Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)

Keyframes and GOP

YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. At a constant 30 fps, set a 60-frame GOP; at 60 fps, set 120 frames. In FFmpeg, those values are commonly expressed with -g 60 and -g 120, respectively.

Audio and upload capacity

YouTube’s published stereo audio recommendation is AAC at 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. This is separate from the video bitrate, so your upload connection must carry both, plus some capacity for ordinary network variation. There is no universal headroom percentage established here: test your sustained upload and choose a setting it reliably supports rather than relying on a brief speed-test peak.

Example FFmpeg command for a looping file

This illustrative command loops an existing file, paces it in real time, encodes H.264 at the 1080p30 video recommendation, and sends it to a YouTube ingest endpoint. It is not a tested universal command; adapt and validate it with your installed FFmpeg build and encoder.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  1. Replace input.mp4 with the recording you want to loop. -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of that input.
  2. Replace the RTMPS address with the current ingest endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room and use your stream key. Keep the key secret; anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
  3. For 1080p60, change -r 30 to -r 60, set the recommended video rate to 17M, adjust -maxrate to 17M, and change the GOP to -g 120. Reconsider the buffer setting and encoder’s CBR controls using the installed encoder’s documentation.
  4. Check the file has an audio stream if you expect audio. The optional map -map 0:a:0? allows the command to proceed if no audio stream exists; without an audio stream, the audio encoding options do not create sound.
  5. Run the command and verify encoding, network output, and YouTube’s stream health before relying on it for an extended broadcast.

FFmpeg applies options to the next specified file, so order matters: -stream_loop and -re precede the input, while output encoding options follow it. -re paces a file input at real-time speed; do not add it blindly to a live capture device or an already-live input. For further details, see the FFmpeg command documentation and format documentation.

Preflight and monitor the stream

  • Run a test with representative motion and audio before the actual broadcast. YouTube advises testing both and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
  • Check YouTube’s ingest status for warnings and confirm the stream is receiving the expected resolution, frame rate, and audio.
  • Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, or network instability over time. If the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, reduce the target or resolve the connection problem before starting a long loop.
  • Confirm you have the rights to stream every video and audio element. A loop does not exempt content from YouTube’s copyright rules or other channel policies.
  • Keep the computer powered, prevent sleep, and ensure the FFmpeg process can remain running. A local loop depends on the host, encoder, power, and network all staying available.

Recovering from an RTMP interruption

FFmpeg documents an optional FIFO muxer pattern for attempting recovery after some transient RTMP output interruptions. One documented set of options is -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. Integrate it only after checking the syntax and required components in your installed FFmpeg documentation. Recovery is an attempt, not a promise of uninterrupted streaming, and it cannot solve insufficient sustained upload capacity, an overloaded encoder, power loss, or an outage on YouTube’s side.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Connection drops or YouTube reports unstable ingest The sustained upload rate is too low or varies too much for the selected output. Test upload capacity over time and lower the video bitrate to a rate the connection can reliably sustain. Account for audio and normal variation.
Video looks choppy or frames are dropped The encoder may be overloaded, or the connection may be struggling. Check FFmpeg output and system load; reduce encoding demands or bitrate as appropriate, then retest.
Keyframe or stream configuration warning The GOP may not match the recommended cadence or the chosen rate-control mode may not be strict CBR. Use a two-second GOP for the frame rate and configure CBR using the selected encoder’s own controls.
No sound The input may lack an audio stream, or the mapping/encoding may not match the file. Inspect the source’s streams and adjust the audio mapping and codec settings accordingly.
Loop stops or does not start The input path, FFmpeg build, or loop options may be wrong. Check that the file opens and that the installed FFmpeg supports the options used; review command output for the first error.
Stream key authentication fails The endpoint or key may be incorrect or outdated. Copy the current endpoint and key from YouTube Live Control Room, and keep the key private.
