Use Playwright to capture each page in a consistent browser environment, then schedule the script with GitHub Actions. For a useful weekly report, keep page names and capture settings stable, preserve screenshots or comparison reports, and review visual differences before treating them as defects.
How the weekly screenshot workflow fits together
Capture and scheduling are separate jobs: Playwright opens pages and takes screenshots or checks them against visual baselines; GitHub Actions starts that work on a recurring schedule. Playwright documents both CI execution and screenshot comparisons, while GitHub Actions provides scheduled workflow triggers.
- Choose pages and capture boundaries. Decide whether each screenshot should cover the full page or only the visible viewport. Give every page a stable name so you can match it to prior weeks.
- Capture consistently. Use Playwright in a consistent browser environment, wait for the page to settle, and save screenshots or use Playwright Test’s visual assertion mechanism.
- Schedule the run. Add a cron schedule to a GitHub Actions workflow on the repository’s default branch.
- Keep outputs. Preserve screenshots or report artifacts for as long as you need to compare them. Playwright’s CI guidance demonstrates uploading a report artifact; choose retention according to your review needs and current artifact settings.
- Review changes. Check differences before treating them as bugs. Timestamps, rotating banners, third-party widgets, and other dynamic content can change between runs.

Set up a weekly GitHub Actions schedule
GitHub Actions scheduled workflows use POSIX cron. The following illustrative entry runs every Monday at 14:17 UTC, because UTC is the default timezone:

- cron: '17 14 * * 1'GitHub also supports an optional IANA timezone. Choose the weekday and timezone that suit the people reviewing the report. The workflow file must be on the repository’s default branch, and scheduled runs use the latest commit on that branch. Weekly runs are supported; GitHub documents a shortest scheduled interval of once every five minutes.
A scheduled start is not an exact-time guarantee. GitHub warns that schedule events can be delayed during high load, especially at the beginning of an hour, and sufficiently busy periods can result in queued jobs being dropped. Scheduling at a minute other than 0 may reduce the chance of delay, but does not guarantee a precise start. See GitHub’s schedule event documentation.

Choose based on where your team wants baselines and reports to live, how reviewers should approve changes, whether a hosted review interface is useful, and how much CI and account setup you want to maintain. Make weekly comparisons easier to trust
- Keep inputs stable. Reuse the same URLs, viewport dimensions, browser settings, and full-page or viewport choice from run to run.
- Use stable identifiers. Name screenshots consistently so the same page can be compared across weeks.
- Account for changing content. Dynamic timestamps, promotions, rotating banners, and third-party widgets may create differences that are not regressions. Decide how your team will interpret these areas rather than assuming every pixel change is a defect.
- Retain enough history. Set artifact retention to match the period over which you expect to review changes, subject to your repository’s current artifact settings.
Troubleshoot missed or noisy reports
- The scheduled workflow never starts: Confirm the workflow file exists on the default branch and that the cron expression and weekday are valid.
- The run starts later than expected: Scheduled events can be delayed under load. Avoid using the report as an exact-time capture system; a cron minute away from the top of the hour may reduce delay risk.
- Images differ every week without a meaningful page change: Check for timestamps, rotating banners, third-party widgets, or other dynamic page content, and review the comparison before flagging a defect.
- Earlier screenshots or reports are unavailable: Check whether the workflow uploads artifacts and whether the configured retention period covers the comparison window you need.
- Comparisons vary despite unchanged pages: Check that the browser environment, viewport, capture mode, and page naming remain consistent between runs.
