First check the exported image at its native pixel size. If the text is sharp there but blurry only when you enlarge or embed the image, the display or a later resize is likely softening it—not Chrome’s capture. If it is blurry in the file itself, check Chrome’s device-pixel ratio (DPR), the page’s layout context, and—on Windows—the browser’s text rendering separately. No single setting fixes every cause.
1. Check whether the exported screenshot is actually blurry
- Open the exported file in an image viewer and view it at 100% scale, where one image pixel is shown as one display pixel if the viewer supports that option.
- Record the image’s pixel width and height. Compare the file at native size with the same image enlarged or displayed inside the app or page where you noticed the problem.
- If it is sharp at native size but soft when enlarged, try another viewer and avoid enlarging or resizing the screenshot. Raster images can look soft when scaled; this is a useful diagnostic, not a universal test for every viewer.
If text is already soft at native size, continue to the capture and rendering checks below. Chrome’s guidance on scaling explains why image enlargement can blur content: Pixel-perfect WebView.
2. Set Chrome’s capture viewport and DPR
Chrome DevTools device mode lets you choose a simulated viewport and DPR, then capture the visible viewport or the whole page. DPR is the ratio between physical screen pixels and logical CSS pixels; it affects the pixel density of the capture. Set it deliberately and verify the resulting file dimensions rather than assuming a particular setting will produce a specific output size.
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on device mode with the device toolbar control.
- Set the viewport width and height to the page layout you intend to capture. Set the device pixel ratio in the device toolbar.
- Open the device toolbar’s options and select Capture screenshot for the current viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page.
- Check the exported image dimensions and inspect the file at native size.
Chrome documents both capture choices and the DPR definition in Simulate mobile devices with device mode. A full-size screenshot includes page content outside the viewport; it is not a text-sharpening or image-enhancement pass.

3. Check whether the page layout is being scaled
This check is most relevant when a site runs in a mobile WebView or another small-screen context. A page without a viewport declaration can be laid out at a desktop-like width and scaled down to fit, making its text appear small or scaled. For a site you control, a standard viewport declaration is:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
Chrome explains this layout issue in its WebView guidance. It is not a blanket explanation for blurry screenshots captured from desktop Chrome.

4. Distinguish text rendering from soft images
Washed-out text on Windows
If live text looks washed out, check the operating system and Chrome version before changing page CSS. A Chrome article published February 12, 2025, describes a Windows Chromium text-rendering issue involving contrast and gamma; it says the updated contrast value was enabled by default for Windows builds starting with Chrome 132. That version detail is a reason to check the browser, not proof that the issue caused a particular exported image. Comparing another current Chromium-based browser or Chrome version can help diagnose the difference. See Better text rendering in Chromium-based browsers on Windows.
Soft images inside the page
If images—not live text—look soft, inspect the source asset’s pixel dimensions and the size at which the page renders it. A small raster image enlarged on the page can blur even when the screenshot capture is working as intended. Chrome’s WebView guidance discusses high-density image assets. The CSS value image-rendering: pixelated concerns scaled images or canvas content, particularly pixel-art-like graphics; it is not a general fix for text anti-aliasing. See Chrome’s image-rendering guidance.

5. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp at native size, blurry only when enlarged or embedded | Viewer scaling or a later resize | View at 100%, try another viewer, and avoid enlarging or resampling the image. |
| Text is soft in the exported file at native size | Capture viewport or DPR | Set the intended viewport and DPR in DevTools device mode, capture again, and compare pixel dimensions. |
| Text appears small or scaled in a mobile WebView | Page viewport and layout width | For a site you control, check for a suitable viewport declaration; do not apply this as a universal desktop fix. |
| Live text looks washed out on Windows | Windows Chromium text rendering and Chrome version | Check whether Chrome is a Windows build at version 132 or later, then compare another current Chromium-based browser or version as a diagnostic. |
| Only photographs, icons, or other page images look soft | Source-image resolution or rendered size | Inspect the source asset separately from the screenshot; do not treat a text-rendering change as an image-resolution fix. |
The exact cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone. The screenshot file, its dimensions, Chrome version, operating system, capture settings, and viewing scale can all matter.
