For an FFmpeg stream sent to YouTube over RTMP, use FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer with output recovery enabled so it can retry after a temporary connection failure. If FFmpeg exits, configure your operating system to restart the process. These are separate recovery layers: a service manager cannot fix a process that stays alive but sends no usable video, and FFmpeg retry options cannot restart a process that has terminated. Check the syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build, then confirm recovery in YouTube Live Control Room.
First identify which part of the stream failed
“Network outage” can mean different things in an FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup. The right fix depends on whether FFmpeg lost its input, could not reach YouTube at its RTMP output, lost all network connectivity, or encountered a stream configuration problem.
- Input failure: FFmpeg can no longer read the source. Output recovery does not by itself restore an unavailable input.
- Output failure: FFmpeg still has media to send but cannot deliver it to YouTube. The documented
fiforecovery pattern is aimed at temporary output failures. - Process failure: FFmpeg exits. Use a process supervisor to relaunch it.
- Receiver or configuration problem: YouTube may not accept or report a healthy feed because of the stream URL, key, selected stream settings, or another receiver-side issue. Check Live Control Room rather than treating a running process as proof of a healthy broadcast.
HTTP reconnect options are for HTTP protocol behavior, such as an HTTP input. They are not a general fix for an RTMP output to YouTube.
Enable FFmpeg’s output recovery
FFmpeg’s documented approach uses the fifo pseudo-muxer around the output format. The manual’s example shows recovery settings for continuing in real time during a temporary output failure and retrying at intervals. Its abbreviated command contains placeholders, so preserve your own input, stream mapping, codecs, and destination rather than copying an incomplete example as-is.

... -f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 ...In this pattern, -fifo_format flv identifies the format carried through the FIFO for an RTMP-style FLV stream, -attempt_recovery 1 enables recovery attempts, and -recovery_wait_time 1 sets the wait between attempts in the documented example. Place the output options where they apply to your output, and check your installed FFmpeg version’s documentation and logs for accepted option names and behavior.
Choose retry behavior deliberately
The FIFO interface also documents max_recovery_attempts: zero means unlimited attempts in that interface. A retry limit can be useful when you want persistent failures to stop and trigger operator attention; unlimited retries may be appropriate for unattended temporary outages, but they can keep retrying when the actual problem is permanent. The recover_any_error option broadens which failures are retried. Use it only if that behavior suits your setup: retrying authentication or configuration errors will not make invalid credentials valid.

Option availability and exact syntax can vary with the installed build. Verify them against that build’s FFmpeg documentation before relying on a command in production.
Keep the stream destination and key current
Use the stream URL and key for the active stream from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube treats the stream key as password-like information that directs and authorizes the encoder feed: keep it out of public logs, screenshots, scripts shared with others, and published command examples. Check the chosen stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room instead of assuming they are enabled or disabled.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
FFmpeg’s internal output recovery can retry while the process remains alive. If FFmpeg terminates, an external service manager such as systemd can restart it after failure. Configure the service around your own command, input, working directory, credentials, and desired restart policy; there is no universal systemd unit that fits every FFmpeg stream.
A process supervisor only reacts to process state. It may not detect an FFmpeg process that remains alive but is hung or no longer sending usable media. That condition needs a separate health check or watchdog strategy, along with receiver-side verification.

Verify recovery from YouTube’s side
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the active stream’s incoming status and stream-health messages after a disruption.
- Compare those messages with FFmpeg’s logs to determine whether the input, output connection, encoder process, or credentials are implicated.
- Check the host’s outbound connectivity and confirm that the active stream URL and key are still correct.
- Test a controlled interruption before depending on automatic recovery, and monitor both audio and video quality. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring quality.
A live FFmpeg process is not evidence by itself that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream, nor does a reconnect guarantee seamless playback for viewers.
Reduce the chance of another interruption
YouTube advises using a reliable connection with sufficient outbound bandwidth and headroom; its streaming tips warn that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. If the streaming host uses Ethernet, a wired connection may be one part of a more reliable setup. It cannot fix a dead router, ISP outage, incorrect key, FFmpeg error, or YouTube-side issue.
