For a Raspberry Pi playing a YouTube playlist online, the playlist does not need to fit on the SD card. The video streams over the internet; the card holds Raspberry Pi OS, the browser and other local data. For a desktop setup, Raspberry Pi recommends at least 32 GB. If you plan to store video files locally, calculate their size separately from the operating system.

Choose storage based on how the playlist plays

The key distinction is whether the Pi streams videos from YouTube or plays files saved on the Pi. Streaming a playlist does not mean saving a full day of video to the card. A browser may use some cache, but Raspberry Pi’s documentation does not specify a fixed cache size for continuous YouTube playback.

Playback setup Storage to plan for
YouTube playlist played online in a desktop browser At least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop, plus room for other local data and updates.
Raspberry Pi OS Lite At least 8 GB for the OS baseline. This is not a recommendation for a browser kiosk or for storing video files.
Video files saved locally The OS storage plus the size of all retained files and additional working room.

Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started documentation recommends at least 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop and at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Those figures are boot-media recommendations, not estimates of YouTube video storage. The documentation says SD cards below 2 TB are supported. Raspberry Pi: Getting started.

For a browser-based playlist, start with 32 GB

A graphical browser is the relevant arrangement for a desktop-style YouTube playback setup, so the 32 GB desktop recommendation is the practical starting point. Raspberry Pi’s kiosk tutorial describes a browser-based setup and specifies a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer with at least 1 GB of RAM for that tutorial; it does not promise a particular level of uninterrupted YouTube playback or quantify browser cache use. Raspberry Pi: Kiosk mode tutorial.

You do not need to multiply the playlist’s runtime by its bitrate when the videos remain online. The card still needs space for the operating system, browser, updates and anything else you deliberately save. The available documentation does not establish one exact free-space buffer for every model, OS release and browser, so leave additional room rather than treating the minimum as a precise total-use target.

If you save video files locally, estimate their size

For locally retained videos, a useful decimal estimate is:

Storage in GB ≈ bitrate in Mb/s × duration in hours × 0.45

  • READY TO BOOT, NO FLASHING REQUIRED: This card arrives with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS already installed, so you can skip downloading images, flashing software, and checking checksums. Just insert it, power on, and go.
  • WORKS ACROSS THE RASPBERRY PI LINEUP: Compatible with the Raspberry Pi 5, 500, 400, 4B, 3B, 3B+, 3A+, Zero 2 W, and Compute Module models - a great fit whether you're starting a new build or upgrading an old one.
  • U3 / CLASS 10 SPEED: A solid speed rating for responsive everyday use - booting the desktop, running apps, coding, browsing, and general Pi projects all feel smooth and reliable.
  • 64GB OF ROOM TO WORK: Plenty of space for the operating system plus your software, files, and projects - with headroom left over as your builds grow.
  • THE EASY WAY TO GET STARTED: Perfect for beginners who want a working Pi out of the box, and a real time-saver for pros. Includes a printed instruction sheet with a setup guide and a link to a walkthrough video.
  • 24 hours at 1 Mb/s: approximately 10.8 GB of video.
  • 24 hours at 5 Mb/s: approximately 54 GB of video.

Add the operating system and other local data to those media totals, and keep extra space available for updates and normal use. Actual file sizes depend on the files you have; a playlist’s online playback quality does not by itself tell you how much storage local copies will need.

Do not confuse YouTube offline viewing with a local Pi archive

YouTube’s offline-download features depend on eligibility, account, geography, device or browser, and video availability. They do not establish a general way to save any arbitrary playlist as ordinary video files on a Raspberry Pi. Do not assume an offline download is a transferable file that can be used as a local Pi playlist. • 4K Ultra UHD: Quickly captures, plays back, and transfers media files, including 1080p Full-HD, 3D, and 4K UHD video
  • High Speed Memory Card: Leverages UHS-I technology for a transfer speed up to 100MB/s. Loads apps faster with A1-rated performance. (Based on internal test environment of Lexar, so the actual speed may vary with different host devices and environments. For devices that don't support UHS-I, the transmission speed will be different due to interface limitations.)
  • Multi Capacity: Available in capacities ranging from 32GB to 512GB. The 64GB micro sd card can support up to 3 hours 4K video, or up to 10 hours 1080P video, 18,800 photos, or 9,900 songs. (Due to different capacity algorithms and partial capacity are used for system files, management and performance optimization, so the actual available capacity may be less than the identifying capacity.)
  • Ultra Durable: Waterproof, temperature-proof, shockproof, magnetic-proof. Lexar 10-year limited warranty for sd card and 1-year limited warranty for adapter.

Common storage-planning mistakes

  • Buying a card sized for 24 hours of streamed video: the playlist is delivered online; its full runtime does not translate into card capacity.
  • Treating 8 GB Lite as enough for every setup: that is Raspberry Pi’s Lite OS baseline, not an assurance that a browser-based arrangement will use Lite or that it can hold videos.
  • Counting only the videos in a local-file setup: include the OS and other retained data, then leave room for updates and working use.
  • Assuming a fixed browser-cache requirement: the cited official guidance does not quantify cache use for a 24/7 Pi playlist.
