If a Raspberry Pi gets hot during a continuous YouTube stream, first identify the exact board and measure its temperature and throttling while the real stream is running. Do not assume every Pi needs a fan—or that a temperature reading by itself proves a cooling failure. Start with airflow and placement; consider a model-compatible cooler only if the measured workload still causes sustained heat or throttling.

Does a Raspberry Pi need a fan for 24/7 streaming?

Not necessarily. Raspberry Pi’s official application note, “Cooling a Raspberry Pi device,” says that most Raspberry Pi devices rely on internal dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and thermal throttling rather than added cooling. Whether your installation needs more cooling depends on the board, workload, enclosure, attachments, and ambient conditions.

A 24/7 YouTube stream is not a single fixed workload. The source material does not establish whether a particular stream setup encodes video on the Pi’s CPU or offloads the work elsewhere. Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, streaming software, and capture or playback method can all be relevant to the workload, so measure the actual setup rather than assuming it is CPU-intensive.

Pi 5 temperature guidance is not a target

In its Pi 5 cooling article published on October 4, 2023, Raspberry Pi says: “All Raspberry Pi boards begin to throttle the processor when the temperature reaches 80°C, and throttle even further when it reaches the max temp of 85°C.” This is the manufacturer’s stated thermal behavior in its Pi 5 article, not a recommended operating temperature or proof that every board and streaming workload behaves identically.

Raspberry Pi also reported its own controlled Pi 5 tests: an uncoolled board idled at about 65°C in open air and rose above the 85°C thermal limit under sustained synthetic stress; with the Active Cooler it stabilized around 64°C under that test. The Pi 5 fan case reached reported sustained-load maxima of about 72°C with the lid removed and 74°C with it fitted. These results describe Raspberry Pi’s synthetic test, not a YouTube stream, an Indian installation, or expected readings for your setup. Do not transfer Pi 5 figures or accessory recommendations to an unidentified board.

How do I stop my Raspberry Pi from overheating while streaming?

1. Identify the hardware and stream configuration

Before changing cooling, record what is actually installed. Note the board model and revision, case, HATs and other attachments, power supply, streaming software, video source or capture method, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding method. This information determines what cooling hardware can fit and gives you a useful baseline if you change the setup.

2. Measure during a representative stream

Observe temperature and whether the board throttles while the stream is running, including during the hottest operating period you expect at the installation site. A reading taken while idle may not represent the sustained workload. Record the room or enclosure’s ambient temperature at the same time; the available sources do not establish an India-specific temperature adjustment or a 24/7 YouTube-stream temperature study.

Keep power and connection symptoms separate from a cooling diagnosis. A fan cannot fix a power-supply or connection fault, and the fact that a Pi is warm does not establish an undervoltage problem. If the stream drops or the board behaves erratically, investigate those symptoms rather than treating them as proof of overheating.

3. Improve airflow and placement first

  • Keep ventilation openings clear and avoid enclosing the board in a location that traps heat.
  • Allow air to circulate around the board and avoid placing it against a heat-insulating surface.
  • If the board is uncased, consider mounting it on edge so air can circulate on both sides. Raspberry Pi’s historical Pi 4 thermal testing illustrates the relevance of orientation and clearance for that board; it does not establish results for other models or your stream.
  • Check the location and enclosure for warm exhaust or other obstacles to circulation, then repeat your measurement under comparable stream and ambient conditions.

Raspberry Pi’s cooling guidance identifies persistent workloads and high ambient temperatures as reasons additional cooling may be useful. For an Indian installation, measure conditions where the Pi will actually run rather than assuming a particular city, season, or climate requires a fan.

4. Add model-compatible cooling only if measurements justify it

If you have a Pi 5 and still see sustained high temperature or throttling after improving airflow, compare the official Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler with the Pi 5 fan case. Both are temperature-controlled options documented by Raspberry Pi. Its Pi 5 fan documentation describes adjustable thresholds: off below 50°C; 30% speed at 50°C; 50% at 60°C; 70% at 67.5°C; and 100% at 75°C, with 5°C hysteresis. The thresholds can be adjusted using device-tree overlay settings.

Those fan thresholds describe the documented Pi 5 fan behavior, not a recommendation to keep every Pi at a particular temperature. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 article favors the Active Cooler over the fan case for overclockers; that comparison should not be generalized to every stream setup. Check fit against the exact board, case, HATs, connectors, and cable clearance before choosing either product. The Active Cooler is appropriate only for a Pi 5.

A passive heatsink or ventilated enclosure may also be considered where compatible, but available evidence does not identify a universal best option for an unspecified board and installation. Compare compatibility, actual-stream thermal behavior, clearance, ambient conditions, fan noise, dust exposure and maintenance, power or connectivity requirements, and local cost and availability.

5. Re-test the same workload

After a placement or cooling change, measure again during the same stream and under comparable ambient conditions. Compare sustained temperature and throttling or performance, as well as noise, airflow, fit, and maintenance needs. Raspberry Pi’s synthetic Pi 5 results do not predict which option will perform best in your YouTube setup; no independent comparative test for this specific 24/7 stream scenario is established.

Why the answer may differ in India

The relevant condition is the temperature and airflow where the Pi is installed, not a general claim about the country. Record ambient temperature at the device, especially during the period when it is most likely to run warm. Enclosures, placement, attached hardware, and the stream workload can also affect the outcome. No India-specific thermal limit or cooling adjustment is established by the sources cited here.

Check current local stock, price, warranty, and compatibility before buying a cooling accessory. Availability and fit depend on the exact board and build; a product name alone does not confirm that it will fit inside your case or clear attached hardware.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the reason you are keeping a Pi running is to play uploaded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, another option is to move that playback off the device. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not cool or repair a Raspberry Pi, and it is not a camera-streaming service.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home to keep that uploaded-video stream running. Each slot carries any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the service also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing, then start the free day.
