The Pi 4 specifies H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. Whether a stream stays up depends on the capture and encoding setup, stable upload, power, heat, and recovery after interruptions. YouTube’s current guidance provides useful encoder settings, but the official sources cited here do not establish how YouTube handles one broadcast that runs beyond 12 hours.
What the Raspberry Pi 4 can—and cannot—establish
Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B’s Broadcom BCM2711 quad-core Cortex-A72 processor, Gigabit Ethernet, and support for “H.265 (4kp60 decode), H264 (1080p60 decode, 1080p30 encode).” That establishes H.264 encoding capability up to 1080p30; it is not a certification for continuous unattended streaming. A simple feed with hardware H.264 encoding and few filters is a more defensible starting point than assuming the Pi can transcode any source with any effects. This is an inference from the published capability, not a reported streaming test. If you are capturing from a USB camera or another input, first confirm that your chosen software can capture and encode it at your target settings on the Pi.
Start with YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. For H.264, it recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular JioFiber connection—or the Pi—will sustain a chosen stream continuously. A conservative starting configuration
For a first trial, use 720p30 H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC audio. Choose a video bitrate below the upload rate you have measured as stable under the conditions in which the stream will run. The 720p30 H.264 recommendation is 3 Mbps; it is a reference point, not a reason to set the stream at a rate your connection cannot sustain. Move to 1080p30 only after testing the complete setup; YouTube’s H.264 recommendation at that setting is 5 Mbps.
Use RTMPS and the correct stream details
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. If you configure an encoder manually, use a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint; Google’s ingestion guide specifies port 443. What JioFiber changes
Jio describes JioFiber plans as offering symmetric upload and download speeds and unlimited data, but the speed available to you depends on your active plan. Check that plan and measure upload stability at the location and time you intend to stream; a generic JioFiber description is not a guarantee for your connection. JioFiber plans
The Pi 4 has Gigabit Ethernet, so a wired connection to the router is a sensible choice for a fixed encoder when the router is nearby. Ethernet avoids relying on a Wi-Fi link, but it cannot prevent outages caused by the ISP, router, power, or the Pi itself. Plan for a channel that must run unattended
A feed that can run for a long time is not the same as one YouTube live event remaining uninterrupted every day. The official YouTube encoder-settings and RTMPS pages cited here explain ingest requirements, but do not establish current duration or archive behavior for a broadcast exceeding 12 hours. Verify YouTube’s current long-stream policy before deciding whether to run one extended event or schedule and restart events.

Before relying on the setup, test the full source-to-YouTube path with representative content. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and check that the Pi’s encoder reconnects or restarts after a dropped connection. If continuity matters, consider backup power for the Pi and network equipment, and make a plan for remote monitoring and recovery. No continuous-runtime test is established for this configuration, so it should not be treated as proven 24/7 infrastructure.
Troubleshooting a Pi 4 YouTube stream
- YouTube reports poor connection or the stream drops: Lower the bitrate, then test again under the intended network conditions. Check the active JioFiber plan and stable upload rather than relying on a headline speed or symmetric-speed description.
- The stream is unstable despite adequate upload: Try wired Gigabit Ethernet, check the router and ONT, and verify power to all network equipment. Ethernet reduces dependence on Wi-Fi but does not eliminate provider or power failures.
- The Pi cannot keep up with the selected video pipeline: Simplify the source, remove unnecessary filters and overlays, and confirm that the software is using a compatible H.264 hardware-encoding path. The listed 1080p30 capability alone does not prove that a particular software pipeline works.
- The event does not reconnect after an interruption: Check the encoder’s reconnect or restart behavior, the RTMPS endpoint and port 443, and the stream key assigned to the event. Test recovery by observing the setup rather than assuming the encoder will resume unattended.
- A broadcast ends or its archive is missing after many hours: Check YouTube’s current long-stream and archive behavior before choosing an event schedule; the official ingest sources cited here do not resolve behavior beyond 12 hours.
