For a file already on your computer, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option loops the input indefinitely. Put it before that input’s -i, pace the file with -re, map the intended audio and video tracks, and send a compatible RTMP or RTMPS stream to YouTube. The script below is a starting point—not a universal preset—because encoding choices depend on your source media, output frame rate, upload capacity, and YouTube’s current guidance.
Choose the loop that matches your sleep-sound files
There is no single best FFmpeg script for every sleep stream. Choose based on whether the sound and visual are already together, and whether the source encoding matches what you want to send to YouTube.

For a single video file with audio, the simplest starting point is usually a single input. Stream copy can avoid re-encoding when the source streams are compatible with the output. Transcoding is more adaptable when you need to change codec, format, frame size, or apply filters, but it uses compute and can affect quality.
A basic FFmpeg script for a looping video with sound
Replace the input filename, ingest endpoint, and stream key with your own values. This illustrative command transcodes video and audio; it has not been verified as a universal configuration.

ffmpeg -versionto see the installed build. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, so if an option behaves differently on your system, check your installed version’s help withffmpeg -h full. - Prepare the input. Make sure
sleep-scene.mp4is accessible from the working directory or use its full path. The example assumes the file contains both a video stream and an audio stream. - Set the input options before the input.
-stream_loop -1requests infinite looping for the next input.-rereads that file at its native rate, which is useful when file playback is being sent as a live stream. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so their position matters. - Select the intended tracks.
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0selects the first video and first audio stream from input 0. If the file’s desired sound is on another audio track, change the mapping rather than assuming FFmpeg selected it. - Set output encoding deliberately. The example uses H.264 video and AAC audio. Its
-g 60is a 60-frame GOP; that is a two-second interval only if the output is 30 fps. Set frame rate and GOP together, and follow the current settings shown in YouTube Live Control Room. - Send the stream to YouTube. Use the RTMPS ingest address and stream key provided by your YouTube live setup. Keep the key out of shared scripts, public repositories, and screenshots; use a protected environment variable or secret store where possible.
When stream copy may be appropriate
If the source audio and video are already encoded in compatible formats and have suitable properties, stream copy can avoid decoding and re-encoding. It cannot apply filters, and it may fail when the encoded streams do not suit the target container or required stream properties. Do not replace the example’s encoding options with copy flags until you have checked compatibility and the resulting stream health.
When you have an audio file instead of a video
Pair the audio input with a visual source—such as a still image or a video—then map the audio and video streams you intend to send. The command above does not do that: it expects a video file with audio already inside it. Whether a particular workflow accepts an audio-only stream or requires video depends on the destination and configuration; the cited official guidance does not establish a universal rule for silent audio or a dedicated sleep-sounds workflow.

Match the output to YouTube’s live encoder guidance
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery into and through Google’s servers.

For H.264, the YouTube table lists 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 720p at 30 fps as 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not guarantees or universal requirements for every setup. The table gives different values for AV1 and H.265. Check the current table for your chosen codec and output mode.

The example’s -pix_fmt yuv420p, AAC stereo settings, and GOP value are starting choices, not requirements for every possible YouTube configuration. The example also does not explicitly set a video frame rate or CBR rate; configure both to suit your output and YouTube’s current guidance before relying on it for a long session.
Preflight the stream and monitor it while live
YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video movement, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health during the event. Before relying on a continuous sleep-sound stream, validate the full path from file playback to YouTube ingestion.

- Confirm the channel can stream live. YouTube’s live streaming getting-started guidance says a channel needs verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old.
- Run a test with the actual file and representative sound and picture, rather than validating only that FFmpeg starts.
- Check available upload speed and select a quality with room for a reliable connection.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics and FFmpeg’s logs during the test and live session.
- Listen and watch at the loop boundary. Confirm the file returns to its start cleanly and that the sound and visual remain as intended.
Troubleshoot common looping problems

A community example from 2022 describes one user’s looping YouTube setup and reports CPU pressure and stream-health trouble; it is an individual anecdote, not evidence that the same flags will fail generally. A 2020 FFmpeg-user discussion includes a suggestion about silent audio with a static-image stream, but that dated community advice does not establish an official universal YouTube rule.

Use sleep sounds you have the right to stream continuously on YouTube. A file being available online or usable in a personal project does not by itself establish permission for an always-on livestream. Check the license terms for continuous live use, attribution, and any restrictions relevant to monetization before going live.

YouTube’s general live-stream eligibility and encoder guidance do not settle how a particular ambient stream will be treated under copyright or monetization policies. Do not assume that looping a file makes it eligible for monetization or resolves rights questions.
