A blank Puppeteer screenshot usually means one of two things: the page had no visible content when the capture ran, or the screenshot settings captured the wrong area or background. Check the final URL and response first, confirm that the expected content has rendered, then inspect the capture options. A successful navigation call alone does not prove that the page is ready or even that it returned the page you expected.
1. Check whether Puppeteer reached the page you intended
Log the requested URL, the page’s final URL, and the navigation response status. page.goto() can resolve for about:blank, and it can return null for about:blank or same-URL hash navigation. In headless shell, valid HTTP responses such as 404 and 500 do not by themselves make navigation throw. A resolved call therefore is not proof of a successful page load. See the Puppeteer Page.goto() documentation (version 25.12.0).

2. Confirm the page has rendered the content you expect
Navigation lifecycle events describe browser activity; they do not guarantee that a particular application component is ready. Inspect the title and body text, then wait for a meaningful element from the target page. Puppeteer’s waitForSelector() API can wait for a selector to appear. With visible: true, it waits for the element to be visible, but neither DOM presence nor visibility guarantees that every image, font, or application task has completed.

If it never appears, inspect the site’s application behavior and the browser’s console, page errors, and failed requests rather than treating the image file as the only evidence.
3. Choose a readiness condition that fits the site
Puppeteer’s default navigation lifecycle is load. Its screenshots guide demonstrates networkidle2, which waits for network activity to become idle under that lifecycle’s criteria. Neither is universally right: applications with polling or long-lived requests may not reach network idle, while a conventional load event can occur before client-side content is ready.

networkidle2when the relevant requests settle and the page does not maintain background traffic that prevents idleness. - Wait for a selector or app-specific condition when a particular component signals readiness more reliably than a global network event.

4. Verify the screenshot region and output options
If the expected content is present in the DOM, check whether your capture includes it. The ScreenshotOptions documentation defines options that affect the image, including viewport dimensions, clip, fullPage, captureBeyondViewport, and omitBackground. A clip can select an empty or misplaced region; a viewport-only capture can omit content below the fold. If omitBackground is enabled, the background is transparent, which can look blank in some viewers or against some page content.
- Confirm the viewport width and height match the layout you intend to capture.
- Remove
cliptemporarily to test whether it excludes the content. - Set
fullPage: trueif you need content beyond the viewport; do not assume it is equivalent to an arbitrary clip. - Check whether
captureBeyondViewportchanges the region captured for your chosen options. - Review
omitBackground, the requested output format, and the actual file path and file contents.
The Page.screenshot() reference documents the capture API. A resolved screenshot call means Puppeteer captured according to the provided options; it does not establish that the selected region contained the content you wanted.

5. Troubleshoot the browser runtime when the page stays empty
If the URL, page content, and capture region all look correct but the screenshot remains blank—or the browser reports errors—collect console messages, page errors, and request failures. Then check the host environment. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide notes compatible dependency requirements on Alpine and the need for a writable user-data directory. It also strongly discourages running Chrome without a sandbox. These are environment checks, not proof that any one of them caused a specific blank screenshot.
