Set the browser viewport to the required width and height before loading the page, then choose an output scale that matches your pixel requirement. For a quick capture, Chrome Headless accepts --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT; for repeatable scripts, Playwright lets you set the viewport directly. If the delivered image file itself must be exactly W×H pixels, inspect its dimensions: viewport size and output bitmap size can differ, especially with device-pixel scaling or full-page capture.
Choose what “exact size” means
A viewport is the browser area used to lay out the visible page. A screenshot file has pixel dimensions. Those values match when the capture uses CSS-pixel scale; device-pixel scale can produce a larger bitmap on a high-DPI configuration. A viewport screenshot shows the visible area, while a full-page screenshot extends down the scrollable document and therefore has a different height.
- Exact layout viewport: specify the CSS viewport width and height.
- Exact output bitmap: also control screenshot scale and verify the saved image dimensions.
- Whole document: use full-page capture only when you want content beyond the visible viewport included.
Fast command-line capture with Chrome Headless
Chrome’s documented headless command uses --screenshot with --window-size. Replace the sample dimensions and URL with your target values:

The command requests a browser capture size, but the CLI reference does not establish a universal guarantee that every platform configuration will produce a bitmap with exactly those dimensions. If the file must be precisely W×H pixels, check the saved image’s dimensions and adjust the capture configuration if necessary. Chrome Headless documentation.

Repeatable captures with Playwright
For automation, set the viewport before navigation. Playwright notes that changing to a phone-sized viewport after a site has loaded may not match how that site behaves when loaded at that size.

The example uses a viewport screenshot and scale: 'css', which maps one output pixel to one CSS pixel. If you want output pixels to follow device pixels instead, use scale: 'device'; the image may then be larger. Use this when the file must match the viewport dimensions
- Set the intended width and height with
page.setViewportSize()before callingpage.goto(). - Capture with
fullPage: falseso the screenshot represents the visible viewport only. - Set
scale: 'css'when you need one output pixel per CSS pixel. - Inspect the resulting PNG’s actual dimensions in your image viewer or image-processing workflow. Do not assume the viewport request alone guarantees the final file size in every environment.

The Chrome DevTools Protocol screenshot method supports a clip option, and its page metrics expose CSS layout and visual viewport measurements.
Keep captures comparable
Matching width and height does not guarantee pixel-identical images across machines. Playwright cautions that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Common problems and fixes
The image dimensions do not match the requested viewport
Check whether the capture used device-pixel rather than CSS-pixel scale, and confirm that the capture is not full-page. In Playwright, use scale: 'css' and fullPage: false for a visible-viewport image, then inspect the resulting bitmap.
The page layout looks like the wrong viewport
In Playwright, set the viewport before navigation. Some sites do not behave as expected if their viewport is changed only after loading.

Two screenshots differ despite matching dimensions
Keep browser version, operating system, rendering settings, hardware conditions, headless mode, and device scale consistent. Differences may still reflect environment-dependent rendering.
The full-page result is taller than expected
Full-page capture includes the scrollable document, not only the visible viewport. Disable full-page capture when the deliverable must represent just the specified viewport.

FAQ
Does an exact viewport always mean an image file of the same width and height?
No. Output scale affects bitmap dimensions, and full-page capture changes the image height. Verify the saved file when exact pixel dimensions are a hard requirement.
